My time with this company was extremely disappointing. From the start, it was clear there was a lack of organization and very little real leadership. Communication between management and workers was poor, and concerns about safety or workload were rarely taken seriously. On job sites, speed seemed to matter more than doing things properly or safely.

The manager, Dean, was the worst supervisor I’ve experienced in my working career. There was no support, no accountability, and no effort to build a respectful work environment. Instead of motivating the crew, management created unnecessary stress and tension on a daily basis.

The work itself is physically demanding and comes with real risks, yet the pay does not reflect that. Training for new employees is minimal, and equipment maintenance is inconsistent at best. It often feels like you’re expected to figure things out on your own while being pushed to meet unrealistic expectations.

The turnover rate is very high, which isn’t surprising. Most employees don’t last long once they see how things are run. If you’re looking for stability, professionalism, and a company that values its workers, you may want to look elsewhere.

Great place to work if you are capable and confident in your abilities. Show up and be reliable and consistent. Follow your orders and do your job without screwing it up and you will succeed. It sounds cliched but it is honestly a very simple formula to success. The sky is the limit if you feel like working for your pay cheque the old school way. If you are the type of person who expects to show up and just get money handed to you for being present, or get promotions for not trying then this is definitely not the right speed for you. You get out what you put in to the company, no more and no less. Be prepared to earn your money, not just have it handed to you. Good benefits, year round work and competitive pay with on the job training for people who aren't scared to work for their money and get dirt under their nails. Its a construction job in Southern Alberta.....there's going to be a higher demand on hours worked in the summer, be prepared for that.

Not for the faint of heart. Concrete is hard work, Demolition can be hard as well. Running a saw all day long in the blaring sun, being exhausted by 3pm but still have hours to work... It is what it is. the hours are long and theres not much of a life to be had in the busy season for the grunts working 12's, its good work and good overtime... For anyone to say that this place is not a good place to work, perhaps, its the job that was not right for you. I've worked here before, and now, and things have only gotten better and better. Management will Never disregard your health or safety, no matter what. The other operators and laborers are usually very good to work with, its a good work environment from grunt all the way up, mind you some days the dung may flow downhill... It's no different than anywhere else.  
 Its hard work, plain and simple. there's a sense of pride to be had here.  

Working at Canwest Concrete Cutting was one of the most unprofessional experiences I’ve had. Management is disorganized, communication is poor, and employees are not treated with respect. Safety is not taken seriously on job sites, and workers are often pressured to cut corners to save time.

The pay does not reflect the hard, dangerous work expected, and there is no real training or support for new employees. Equipment is not maintained properly, which makes the job even more stressful and unsafe.

High turnover says it all—most people don’t last long here. If you’re looking for a place to grow, learn, and be respected, this is not the company.

The people on in the entry level positions are great to work with overall

Terrible management practices, the general manager is arrogant and treats the staff like garbage

Totalitarian people are treated like commodities 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
In the fall I routinely worked 14 hour days where jobs were stacked in such a way to make taking breaks more of a hassle than anything

Worked with CanWest for almost 2 years. Pay started a lot lower than average, but within 1 year my supervisor moved me to the standard amount for my position - the company owners were very generous. 

As long as you are a hard worker and someone who gets their work done, this is a wonderful place to work. Administrators help each other out and supervisors go out of their way to help new employees feel welcome and valued. 

I have learned a lot more on this job than I have in past jobs, making my experience here worth my time. 

I was lied to about the wage, the hours, and the job itself. They promised me tons of work but I never worked a full week. Tried being positive and friendly and willing to learn, but it's an awful environment. Disrespectful coworkers, even worse management, both parties getting off on others misfortune.

Lots of wasted time on jobsites because of operators bring family drama into the workplace or physically attacking you, while you just want to work and get the job done. Then you will be belittled because you do one thing the operator doesn't like.

I moved on to a place that treats me right, but I wished I'd never had taken this job.

I was initially hired with the promise of full-time hours, but after a short period, I received little to no work. Despite maintaining a positive and cooperative attitude, I often felt belittled and disrespected by both coworkers and management. Communication was poor, and the work environment quickly became toxic. I eventually made the decision to leave due to the lack of support and professionalism. This may not be everyone's experience, but I would recommend asking detailed questions during the hiring process and observing how employees are treated before committing.


The company is privately owned with very hands-on involvement. The company was continually growing and expanding into different areas of service. (ie. mudjacking services, asphalt/concrete milling services along with the concrete cutting & coring). The diversity made the job interesting & challenging and with my move to Red Deer I am hoping to find a positive and interesting work environment to utilize the knowledge and abilities that I have gained from my past employment.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The people are great. The pay is good and there is room for growth! 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Summers get busy, so there is some overtime required but they have been really good about understanding family needs. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Like any job, good days and days when things go wrong, you mess up and break something. They are understanding of that. Just keep busy and be a responsible employee and there's no issue.
