Pros: Residents and family members are wonderful, and no experience needed. 2 stars for job security because they can’t afford to lose staff anyway.

Cons: low morale, favouritism among management, very low pay with no discussion of raises, inconsistent scheduling and staff shortages due to turnover rate. Staff responsibilities such as cooking or activity coordination are thrown onto the nurses and PSWs because management will wait for months for an applicant to accept a shamefully low wage offer, rather than hire someone qualified and pay them in line with the market. It is cheaper for them to just make their PSWs do someone else’s job on top of their own and only pay them as a PSW. You are a cash cow for them and will get nothing back. They will request upper level management for carefor community PSWs to work in the home for double your wage and half of your responsibilities, rather than mend their own staffing issue with appreciation and fair wages. They will mislead you about your benefits. If you have a good heart and truly care for the residents and your job, you will struggle with management and be completely unappreciated nonetheless.

Carefor is the worst employer I have had the misfortune of being affiliated with. 
They expect you to work extra hours for free as they won’t pay overtime despite the workload exceeding the time you have to complete daily tasks. Further, you will be severely reprimanded for any failure to complete these tasks. The tacit understanding is that you will arrive early, skip lunch and stay late for free. 
The training offered is inadequate and leaves new staff unprepared to work alone which wouldn’t be a problem with supportive coworkers, which Carefor actively chases away in favour of a tenured staff of unhelpful bullies who relish throwing new staff under the bus to management and supervisors days after they’ve finished training them. This often results in resignation or firing of brand new staff. 
There is a lot of malicious gossip and with 0 job security a culture of blame has developed in which every problem leads to finger pointing from all sides. 
It is a unionized job but the contract is painstakingly written to ensure that anyone can be run out at any time for any reason and in my experience shop stewards will actively assist management against coworkers out of fear of job loss. 
Would advise looking elsewhere.

Clients are wonderful, a few co-workers are fantastic.
Unfortunately Management is toxic and the overall "Workplace Culture" is toxic.
Hard work is overlooked, loyalty is laughed at. It's all in who you know, not what your skillset is or how loyal, dedicated and hard you work.

If you advocate for yourself and the clients, management views this as a threat, not a virtue. Union Reps are laughable, and all are 'friends' with each other. They are definitely not there for you. 

They push policy only when it suits them, otherwise it goes largely ignored. Complaints/concerns are ignored and laughed at behind closed doors.
If you aren't "friends" with or related to someone there, you can't get ahead within the company.

There is zero communication between employees and management, or between managers. 
The entirety of both Pembroke locations needs a complete overhaul from the top down.
If you value your personal self worth, clientele and want the best for people, do not work here.


We are assigned back to back home care visits (average of 10-12 clients in 7.5 hours) with very little time between visits to do additional tasks as they come up throughout our day. Location is constantly monitored through electronic mobile devices provided, and visits are disproportionately timed for the care you are providing. Management and supervisors are not often available for support, scheduling coordinators always assigning visits outside of our designated geographical areas and pressuring us to pick up more visits due to "operational need", and many policy changes in the last year causing significant increase in workload with no reflection on our pay.  High employee turnover rate due to all the recent changes, low retention of current staff.

I've worked for this company for a number of years. I started out as a PSW and now work as an RPN. Overall, I feel that things run well. There's definitely some negatives like the workplace culture being very toxic at times, but I think the residents more than make up for that. The pay isn't ideal to start, but we're always working short staffed so there are plenty of opportunities to pick up shifts. Even if you're casual, you could work part time or full time hours if you want, which I think is good especially now with the covid restrictions because you can only work in one health care setting. Carefor isn't perfect, but I think it's a good fit for anyone who's starting out their career and needs to get some experience in their respective field. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
You are given all the necessary equipment to work. Mainly it's the phone from which they send you schedules and also monitor your movement.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The shifts can come far apart and the persons doing the scheduling may be not so diligent at times. You may call a client to visit and they tell you that your visit has been cancelled at the office 4 days earlier, and the office will not update the records. When you email the office, they will just remove it from your list and life goes on. The loss of remuneration to the worker doesn't bother them.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The hierarchy is good, you can relate to any one in the line of authority but it does not necessarily mean you'll get your complaints resolved.

I started working at carefor November and since then it hasn’t been pleasant my supervisors and managers mostly set me to fail and they never care how much effort you  put into the work . They expect you to meet all requirements like some computer and not a human being . They are not understanding. They don’t care and also ready the to give you  a bad report each time they have a report and never talk about the good things you do with your work . All these affects my mental health  in a big way .my job isn’t supposed to make me cry yet I have done that a couple of times at carefor because I put in so much effort yet none of it is recognized and appreciated.

Not a good Company to work for.  Carefor should change the company name to Careless.  Management only care about themselves.   No job security.  PSS is the only department that has no union.  And it's the department that could use union protection the most.  When you work for Carefor you become their possession.   Forget about your life/family.  Co-ordinators are rude.  Management don't care about the clients needs and wants.  They send non palliative trained staff to see palliative clients.  They don't seem to understand what a casual worker means.  And they seem to keep the bad workers and scare off the good workers.  Horrible place of employment.

Carefor community health services is a place to work reasons because it gives a beginner lots of experience and the system and policy is relaxed and there are lots of in training to educate support workers on the skills and educational experience when dealing with clients knowing the dos and done in caregiving.

I've been with this company for almost 5 years now, and I still love my job. I have amazing coworkers and wonderful supervisors. The scheduling/coordination team at the office is excellent at what they do, and I have honestly never had any issues with anyone in management or the office. 

The hardest part of the job is the clientele. We work with some very challenging people, and it can absolutely cause burnout. But the clients are absolutely also the BEST part of the job. While some are difficult and some situations we see are heart breaking, the work we do is absolutely worth it. At the end of the day, I am proud of what I do and I am proud of my coworkers and clients alike.
