Nursing is a hands on career in LTC - The complexities of the residents, require critical thinking to triage the needs and meet them.  With increased demand on documentation, it is a fine line in completing the tasks requiring documentation within an 8 hour period.  Often times required documentation requires the need to complete after the end of the shift.  Without pay.  This is chronic throughout the healthcare system that is strapped to provide pay for completion of tasks.  Healthcare facilities work within basic levels of Ministry Standards with very little perks for performance.  However this is across the board.  Caressant Care is a for profit chain of homes throughout Ontario that provides those basic needs to it's residents within the standards of care. At the end of the day it is the smile on the resident's faces and their trust which is the most valuable.  The administrator is usually a non nursing person who caries out the daily management of the home well.  The stress is on the Director of Care to meet the needs of staff, scheduling, dealing with families and their stress, staff and their stress, ordering supplies, ensuring the standards are met, discipline and it is a very heavy role which is often not maintained for more than 5 years because of the stress.  This stressful role then invades the culture of the home and the staff and can create a toxic environment.  There is a need for more calm and support in the role, as they DON is sandwiched between upper management, internal management, familes, residents and staff.  

Co-workers are pleasant, capable.

The smiles and responses from residents and making a difference in their lives is the best part of the day.  Not feeling effective in meeting the needs of the residents, i.e. MD who does not return calls is the most difficult and puts a lot of pressure on ensuring the comfort and needs of residents are met medically is a REAL challenge.  Often times requiring residents to be sent to hospital for emergent medical needs, causing disruption to the resident through transfer, and to the added cost to families to pay for transport back from hospital is also a real stressor.

Working at Caressant Care in Fergus is a very stressful. Some of the registered staff are amazing, helpful, smart and super supportive. There are also many very dedicated and under appreciated personal support workers that do a fabulous job. There are some that just like to do things their own way. I guess that is the atmosphere at every work place and you learn to adjust with it. There is a lot of pressure from the management with very little support from them. You are expected to joggle various different tasks in a short period of time with little to no help. The saddest part about working at caressant care is that no matter how hard you try you will never be appreciated. You will be thrown under the bus or used as a  scapegoat. There is so much liability that  going to work became a nightmare at one point. You never leave on time at the end of your shift in the fear that if you dont complete tasks you will be written up, or receive a phone a call from the manager the next day. No matter how much you try to explain how hectic the shift was or that you  tried your best and even stayed back. It comes back to the tasks that weren't done. Med pass is difficult, in addition to the responsibility of  being the charge nurse. You have be quick to make decisions, not everyone will listen to you. Tasks will be thrown at you to complete which can get hectic as there are two sides to the facility. 

A typical day at work consist of admission calls in, replacing staff, dealing with issues that arise on the floor from both sides. Dealing with upset family, completing assessments, completing tasks for RPN such as falls, further assessing residents, managing PSW etc. 

The nursing burnt out is real and it did not take me long to realize that when I started working here. My advice is that if you do apply try your best, stay organized, don't let the negative things get to you. Being a nurse is a great feeling, but I just wasnt happy working there anymore. The work environment really got to me.  All the best!

I absolutely loved my time at Caressant care. My co-workers are a great bunch to work with and the residents became like family. Management was great in the beginning making the facility feel very much like a huge family but as management changed over the years they became more about the bottom Dollar and less about the residents. Everyone became a number residents and staff included. Most of the management hide in their offices and are very detached from what is actually going on in the facility. Staff are always short and over worked and management never takes the time to thank them for all their hard work and dedication. There is no room to grow professionally at this facility as they prefer to bring in new blood instead of allowing current employees the opportunity to advance.  Following professional job requirements for some staff but not for others. Educational/training opportunities at this facility are extremely lacking on all fronts. Even after repeated requests for more training you are told “I’ll look into it” but nothing comes out of it.  What was once a great place to work has now become very cooperate and cold. 

Typical day at work I would go in and set dining room tables with water, milk, coffee and tea. Then I would return to the kitchen and get all the food on my cart. I would serve the residents supper and their desert with tea and coffee. After serving I would unload my cart and help my employees do all the dishes. I would Then have my daily job which could be cleaning a fridge or filling up salt and pepper shakers. At the end of my shift I would take out garbage with my co workers. I learned to be very patient with the residents and compassionate. I learned that just kindly asking them how their day is could brighten their mood to know that they live in a caring and compassionate environment. My current management is amazing. She is so kind and friendly with the residents. She also would bend over backwards for her employees. The hardest part of the job is when residents pass away. After awhile of seeing them regularly you can't help but get attached to them. The most enjoyable part of the job is just making the residents happy. I never thought that I would like working in a retirement home as much as I do.

All staff including management do not follow the rules and regulations. One rule broken repeatedly on a daily basis violates fire regulations. Cell phones are openly used by staff when it's clearly not permitted.Training was barely existent at best and the trainer went on for hours during training about their personal conflicts with the company. The majority of information needed for the position was not provided during that small window was not all provided. Not all information was in the job manual. The staff were gossipy and cut throat. The management, especially top executives, are power trippers and totally disconnected with union staff. Simply implementing additional computer programs would organize a majority of work making for much less unnecessary paperwork. Outside visitors have an impression of it being somewhat a zoo. Completely unprofessional practices. The place looks old and in much need of a good overhaul. I certainly wouldn't want my loved one in a place like that. The main wing looks crowded and unkempt.

It is very busy, residents make your days interesting.  I learned that management has a limited budget to work with, they work hard to provide all necessities for residents on a restricted income. I have met staff and residents that come from all over, it's not only locals that work or reside at Caressant Care Bourget. And everyone is so friendly and welcoming.  The hardest part is the emotions we experience with the sickness or the loss of a resident.  What I enjoyed the most was seeing how the managers from different departments worked so well together in controlling the day to day issues and keeping everyone happy.  Also, love the stories that came with the residents, all the different backgrounds, the different personalities, they managed to put a smile on my face every day!

The culture is toxic I do not mean staff to staff culture either If you want to feel consistently belittled and harassed by management this is the place for youManagement does not care at all about the staff, and quite frankly they don’t care about the residents eitherThe nurses and psws are fantastic with the biggest hearts but the issue is there’s not many left This home is being run with almost only agency staff who do not get adequate training I put in my unappreciated time here but it’s not worth sacrificing your mental health for and being the scapegoat for all wrongdoingsThe best thing Caressant Care ever did was get taken over by an outside management company and the worst thing was getting rid of it

I have worked at CC Bourget for several years. The improvements have come in leaps and bounds. A lot of hard work has went into improving that place to make it better for the residents and staff. LTC is a hard area to work in for sure but we do just fine here. Our residents are well cared for and the management are always doing their best to keep things running smoothly for everyone. Everyone almost always gets their requested vacation and sometimes even management covered a shift or two when things were tight for staffing. 
Im a registered staff and sometimes I think the PSWs need to act more professional but they have hard jobs also. 
Would certainly say this place is ok to work.

Decent pay rate Compared to other PSW jobs but that is about the only good thing about the company

The management team is horrible and they don’t Care of the least bit about their employees you are just a number on their payroll

The work environment is busy fast paced short staffed always and horrible management team

Typical day you are busy and run off your feet there is not enough help you were expected to do the work of four people sometimes with only one or two staff and management just sits in their offices in won’t help at all

An average day was fast paced and stressful yet left u feeling rewarded. i learned compassion and respect for our elderly and special needs. 
management was on the other had need to be retrained and given compassion seminars for both the residents and the staff. They create a separation between the staff causing more conflict and stress needed between workers.  
Besides the heavy physical labour and stress caused by management.  The emotional toll of loss and watching the elderly slowly failing with age. 
The part I enjoyed the most was the love of the residents and the rewarding feeling when u help them achieve something or get them to smile. As well the friendships that I made with residents and staff.
