Carillion Canada simply treated their employees poorly and it showed. Management asked a lot of their employees, creating a stressful work environment and offered no sort of compensation, incentives or team building events for comradery. 

Most of the jobs were often stressful and dangerous. A majority of the duties were to be performed along the shoulder of major highways around the tri- cities. We were often called out to shut down highways when major accidents occurred and needed to work in cooperation with the Ontario Provincial Police, fire fighters, paramedics, and any other safety services. 

Working for Carillion has given me many valuable experiences and skills that i can put into practice in many other workplaces. one of my responsibilities was to train a new employee every summer that i worked. I learned the value of working hard under pressure, i gained analytical skills from reading and filling out different forms of documents. i gained an appreciation for working in groups of people and also having to work independently and being responsible for completing my assignments.

This was one of the most thankless jobs Ive ever had. They dont pay very well at all and care very little about the health and well being of their drivers. They expect constant on call 24 7 and will work you until you cant walk anymore. They are horrible when it comes to women in this company. Most of the drivers are perverts and drunks or drug addicts although they have a few decent ones. And if one of these perverts do something derogatory the dist mgr simply gives them a slap on the hand. Most of the drivers at least in my division wanted to sleep all shift and complain constantly when asked to do a job. When asked to be on shift with others instead I simply got a too bad from the boss. I worked there for two seasons and will never go back.  The public is also very unappreciative of your efforts as I constantly had people giving the finger or dirty looks or swerving towards the plow. Put simply youare way overworked and bossed around. Underpayed and not apperciated. It makes you miserable. They have NO concern for employees.

The site staff were always great as well as most people at the head office, however, the upper management always gave the impression that they were above everyone else.  Even though they asked for suggestions from staff, most were not implemented.  Upper management did not like spending money so our departmental budget was always small and then it would be squeezed mid year.  Most was due to leadership from the UK parent company which after 200 years in business died a fiery death.  You can read online the full details of that debacle.  In saying all of that, the people in my department were great to work with and was the reason that I stayed for so many years.  One thing that Upper Management always said to us was that, "Our people are our best asset!", which was true unfortunately they never believed it themselves.

It was my first year working with them. Worked on a spray patch crew all over eastern alberta highways. I flagged all summer and learnt traffic control techniques. Our foreman was great to work for and gave us a few pointers to the green workers. I worked on a great crew. Everyone was down to earth and always having fun. Each different shop we worked out of seemed to have a great shop foreman. The hardest part of the job (which wasnt to bad..) is the amount of walking. Somedays we worked two workzones (3kms each) which ends up being 12 kms of walking. Once you finish one lane you have to go back and walk the other side. It was a blast. Working outside has its perks! Wildlife, Sunshine, Fresh air. We couldnt work on rain days which worked out perfect! it was great being able to just work sunny gorgeous days.

The worst position I have ever held. I was hired for P3 pursuits. Carillion was unsuccessful on seven of seven pursuits. The P3 team was at each others throats constantly blaming each other for the failure. quite frankly I was embarrassed to even be associated with Carillion.

Project Co meetings were always very hostile and uncomfortable to attend.

Being bullied was common.Humiliation and threats were also common.

Despite identifying this to HR in Toronto absolutely nothing was done about this  and to my surprise the HR Manager left the company shortly there after.

The fact of the matter is Carillion is a poorly run company, managers such as the ones I had were not accountable for deliverables. It was absolutely horrible.

I was a project intern, that helped electrical engineers and supervisors in updating work log spreadsheets, going out on the field inspecting and reviewing any additional temporary work that needed to be completed and keeping updated meeting minutes for the electrical department. I was stationed at Union Station Revitalization Project in downtown. 

I also helped with emergency lighting testing, and tracing and solving interferences using interference drawings.

With the parent company gone and current company in Canada restructuring and under bankruptcy protection I just worry about whether I will have a job in a couple months.  Management tells us its all good but obviously its not.  Would appreciate some honesty of where this company is heading and whether I should find another job instead of being kept in the dark.  If the company fails ....will all of us actually get our final paycheque? Holiday pay? Pensions?

I like it here. There is lots to learn and lots of provided training. For the most fellow workers are great. The hours are good and there is overtime available for those who want to work. Management work with you on any issue and are courteous and very knowledgeable. Would recommend Carillion to anyone out there. Carillion is a industry leader on may fronts.

Never worked in this type of environment the concern was more about was defending a decision or what was best for the individual and not what was best for the company. People management was not a priority  and some employees were treated in a very unprofessional manner by. Sr management personnel who should have known better. Those in lower management positions were much better in the managing of people but a lot of micro managing was taking place.

When a event happens [snow],we the drivers get called to come and man a piece of equipment. Not all the equipment is new and this is a problem. The management at our site are average,overall a good fit. The nature of the beast is weather, cold wet,blowing,and having to work on equipment in order to operate during a event is poor planing.   The company is in trouble. The wages/benefits need to reflex who is actual doing the work
