Carlson Construction is an almost 100 year old company, with a strong reputation for quality in the Alberta market. I've worked with Carlson, both as a client, and now as an employee, and can wholeheartedly say that this is a company full of really good people, who care a lot, and want to do the right thing. As I've gone through my career, that is the #1 most important thing, and Carlson delivers it in spades.

A typical day at work in my role is always different, as I am working within a relatively new function within the company - and the work I do generally varies, regardless of industry or company. Colleagues are happy to help with questions, and there's an increasing openness to trying new things, too.

I think the culture is generally good - with such great people, how could it not be? The fridges are stocked with drinks and snacks. There are team BBQs, and an awesome Christmas party. We are currently evaluating our core values to ensure they resonate, and have recently launched a new mission and vision statement.

With that being said, I would love to see some of Carlson's policies evolve, in terms of creating more flexible hours, and the potential to work from home on a more regular basis. In the summer, employees have the opportunity to work a compressed work week throughout the week to take half of Friday off, which is a great start. With all of that said, I have found them to be flexible, but there is still some room for growth there.

The bonus of being a medium-sized company is you are involved in key decisions, have access to leadership anytime it's needed, and a real feeling of family in the office. With around 100 staff, there's nowhere for poor performers to hide so everyone on staff is contributing in their way to the company's goals and gets to learn about other people's work and roles.

On the fun side of things, our HQ has a full fitness centre and golf simulator on-site, holds weekly staff bbqs during the summer and we hold staff events to stay connected with our Calgary team.

This is a great company for anyone pursuing a career as a project manager, superintendent or any one who has a great deal of experience prior to joining this company like journeyman carpenters. But is a poor choice for anyone who wishes to join the apprenticeship program. although they have had their share of projects that have been taken on with their own carpenters, most of their work is sub contracted out leaving mainly demo and clean up. If you are looking for a job in which to expand your knowledge in any such way as carpenter this is NOT the company for you.

Before the merge with Carlson, CPI Was a great place to work.  However a company that has in the last two years changed out just about all of its PM PA and office support has some issues.  For example they had a great office manager who they let go, over their earned time off.  They have now gone through six, six ppl trying to replace this person.  They brought in an OM that is a bully plain and simple.  One of their VP is a bully.  It is not a good place to work if you want to get rewarded for hard work.  Constant change in staff is a red flag for any company.

Owners were terrible to deal with and dont respect employees.  Dont know how to run a business and lots of turnover as a result.  

Theres lots of nepotism and its getting worse.  Lots of good people to work with but theres a handful of owner "favourites" or family that get an extra say in everything where they dont have any business or right to speak up plus they get special treatment.  Other people have quit because of them.

It was good when I started and it went downhill.  Would not recommend anyone working here now.

I worked there as a summer student in their estimating department.  From the first day arriving there everyone made me feel very welcome and the office itself was pretty awesome.

Every Friday they would have the staff come together for a social gathering and even during lunch breaks people would get together.

Management was supportive and easily approachable.

I would definitely recommend working here as the time I had there was very valuable.

Carlson is a great company to work for and their 90 years of being in the construction business proves that. The environment is all about teamwork and working together to get the job done. 

They are huge supporters of giving back to their community with such charities like Santa's Anonymous and YESS.

Working at Carlson you have the opportunity to grow and you are surrounded by a team that can help that happen.

I was a project coordinator with Carlson for one summer after my first year at NAIT and then again for 8 months after I graduated from NAIT. I had to move on for personal reasons but while I was at Carlson I learned twice as much in 8 months than I did in 2 years of school. I was involved in some very interesting and challenging projects. Everyone in the office is friendly and great to work with.
