In my role at the Saint John Distribution Centre we made solid improvements on proper student/part-time hiring that eliminated almost all over-time. We rapidly cross-trained to eliminate any areas that did not have enough people trained; thus eliminating bottle-necks in production, and also creating a more efficient Distribution Centre. We also were able to work with purchasing to create a much “smarter” Inventory, thus creating faster turn in inventory for our customers. We did all this and also focused on safety – noting that we worked over a year without a lost time accident. All of the above resulted in us winning the top Distribution Centre award in 2007.

That award gave me my promotion to the Toronto CarQuest Distribution Centre; we made the same vast improvements at the Toronto Distribution Centre. In a short time we made improvements in product picking efficiency by re-working lines and thru positive motivation, and coaching. We also rapidly dropped picking errors. We also improved on lost time accidents. Through cross-training and motivation we eliminated most bottle-necks in productivity and in doing so eliminated most over-time. During my time at the Toronto Distribution Centre I was awarded with a warehouse manager of the year award. I was also chosen to be a mentor due to my ability to manage change, and present it in a positive manner to other managers, and supervisors in the company striving to get to the next level.

Every day you're expected to hit a standard that can very based on your position or item you are working with. which should make sense but once you start to learn how it works you learn its something you can cheat or it'll be your downfall. somethings are just harder to work with. Depending on the item it can be physically draining on different parts of your body. They'll be the first to tell you the steps of not getting hurt but the standard they enforce so heavily makes it impossible to do so. a lot of the management just doesn't care about the state of the warehouse. its a unorganized mess. They sure do love to yell at people tho. they also tend to pick favorites who just cant get in trouble. I know....... I was one of them. The workplace culture is weird because you could meet some of the nicest people ever but it just seams like word travels so fast throughout the ware house. The hardest part of the job was the physical work. you're dealing with car parts. stuff is gonna be heavy. One thing that kept me working was how nice the hours were. It was real easy to do school and work at Carquest       

This business is fast paced, as you deal with many different types of customers. ex:  Garages

You have to be focused, and you have many tasks on the go at the same time. You could be picking orders to be delivered to a garage, getting an order ready to be picked up by a courier, or making a delivery if all other drivers were on the road.

The entire management team is "Hands On", and is involved with the day to day operation of this business.

The hardest part of the job was keeping track of where all of the delivery drivers were at any given time, being able to answer questions from management.  If you didn't have an answer, you tried to find one. 

The most enjoyable part of the job... Meeting the customers, dealing with them on a day to day basis.  Knowing that you've been able to do something for them to help their day go a bit better.

They pretend they care about you but truly dont. They will make sure they get the most out of the money they pay you. Too many employees there that are slow and talk all day but will keep the job as they are liked by management. Work like a dog and your reward is more work and staying in late. Work too slow and you'll be written up or fired.

Finish up all your work and ready to go home? No, now you have to go help the other zones that haven't been finished because the company wont hire enough employees. Even while understaffed, you have co workers that are slow and hold up all the work. The slow workers will go home regardless and the hard workers will have to stay in late and get everything done quick so that management can go home. 

I can go all day about why you should avoid this job but Ill just leave it at that. Good Luck.



The typical day at work is basicly going to team mates morning meetings daily and the supervisor will assign you your work and do the work in that day. I have learned more about the Rf scanner and the princpals of the job. The Management is ok they should be better communication between the team mates and the rest of the management. My co-workers was great to work with with some typical conflicts that were resolved. The hardest part of the job is meeting their picking standards every month they move it up and have to reach at least 100% production level with picking with totes. The most enjoyable part of the job for me is moving from stocking to picking and picking to stocking.

The company’s mission statement is not adhered to in relation to advancement within the company.  They prefer to headhunt rather than advance from within the employee pool.  Pay is among the poorest in the industry.  The less management needs to pay staff, the more they get on their bonus package.  Very little motivation to promote business or put the effort in when you know it’s the store manager and his manager that are going to benefit financially.   Very dissatisfied with upper managements lack of control in this matter. 

Worst place I have worked, management takes the micro management approach. Has to know where everyone is at all times. Some co workers were good while others just made the place miserable. Your given barely any training and a couple of ten min video's then expected to operate like you have been there for 20 years. Forget making a mistake, my lord talk about getting jumped on for those. Pay scale was barely above minimum wage and they run you like your in a 3rd world country. HR is non existent, be very careful if your thinking about working here. If you outshine your co workers then the clique comes out and your days are numbered.  

These people are very unreasonable when it comes to your well being. I was with this company for longer I would like to say and they do not care for your well being. YOU ARE NOTHING BUT A NUMBER at this company! All they want is the work done, they dont care if your hurt, in pain, pulled something or hurt your self in the job they will find some kind of BS to have you still pulling numbers. They will have monthly meeting discussing how much money the company have made but not fixing the issue in the work place. You can talk about it for years...and trust me the employees do and yet nothing is done. This is a good job to have if you want to make quick money.

Deliveries and only deliveries..

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Cores , whatever you do , the management is never satisfied. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Terrible, never satisfied,  always complaining , and  making the clients wait on the business phone for so long , is a no no . And then the delivery drivers , get all the headaches from the clients .

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Headaches,  not a organized store ,and the people that work at that carquest do not last long.

CARQUEST was a wonderful place to work with positive individuals in a very clean work environment. Management there was great they were all very good people who looked out for there workers and made sure we were in a safe work environment and took the time to let us know about workplace hazards and never once let an employee partake in unsafe work definitely one of the best employers I ever worked for
