It's not the worst agency ever, but it's also not good. Management will always throw staff under the bus even if they were the one that directed you to do something. There's no cohesion in management, either, you'll be told to do one thing by one person and then the opposite by another, and you will be the only one held accountable. Managers and team leads never advocate for staff and don't care about burning out their staff, they just want to work you as much as they can with no care about your well-being, other than lip-service and a cheap card signed by a bunch people you have never met. It's so draining, I can't really recommend working here at all. The CEO likes to slap us in the face every so often sending out an email saying for our Christmas gift, he's donating money on our behalf to some organization or that the company received a lot of money for doing things for staff and he's going to be using it for having freezies in the fridge in the group homes and offices. I don't think they know how to appreciate staff at all. The higher up you go on the management scale in this company, I have no idea what they do. They're always leaving work early, they have no direct contact with anyone, they spend large portions of their day chatting with each other and playing pranks on each other or choosing to work from home. It's rude seeing how comfortable they are working us all death while they do nothing. The benefits plan is also not good, everywhere else I've worked it was 100%  employer covered - here they take a minimum of $150-200 from your paycheques and they are not optional. Supervision is also a joke, you can't really complain, because if you are open about disagreeing with something your supervisor does, it gets marked on your annual review as difficulties getting along with other people. There's also no automatic raise at the year mark, your team lead has to request one and it'll be ages before you find out if you're getting one and there's no open pay grid where you can see what the next pay level would be. If you're new to the field, this is an okay job, if you have a few years of experience, go somewhere else. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Best part of working with catholic social services is they are family friendly. If you need time off due to family issues. They accommodate as best as they can. Most of the time my time off was always approved.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The work is challenging. The higher ups expect alot out of the employees. They see what is on paper and not how the individual behaves, they don't take time to know the individuals they are to serve. Seems they point fingers and find blame to people who dont deserve it. Alot of favoritism between service coordinators and employees as everyone has their favorites. Lots of back stabbing when it come to different races. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Depends on what home you are in can be peaceful. The company does have lot of opportunities of learning, fundraising, and get together. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Again it depends on  the home you work in. They are group homes of 3 or less in the home. You are to help with activities of every day living. Cook meals, bathe, vitals, take them to appointments or activities.

CSS is a good work environment, the management and staff are supportive of one another, they appreciate their staff and pay fair for an agency.  The clients appreciate the care they receive, it's a rewarding workplace.  They try their best to give good benefits to part-time and full-time staff.  If you're looking for an HCA position and you want to serve and help others in your community CSS is a great company to work for. 

At this job as a support worker with people who have aggressive behavior you are blamed a lot of the time for something you might have done or not done to "cause the behavior "  when you get to know the client and feel you can make good judgment calls based on their needs you are questioned or not heard. If there is a medical issue in regards to the client you are ignored until the problem becomes so bad somethings needs to be done. The wage is very low for the type of environment and risks involved. DO NOT WORK HERE if you value your health and happiness. The management is the worst, they micromanage everything without even knowing the individual or his/her needs

It's a good job if you're just starting out. They advertise the salary for a job but apparently HR doesn't let you go to mid to higher salary that is shown. They said they pay competitively within non profit and I completely disagree. 
Management is outdated and don't listen to their workers at all. Had higher ups tell us to keep a secret from our manager. 
HR is not your friend here.  Majority of the time when you need something from them, you have to follow with them. Can't do their job half of their time and they're extremely slow to getting back to you. 

The workplace suffered from poor leadership, a lack of communication, and inadequate support for employees. High staff turnover and low morale made it difficult to provide consistent

In my experience, the team lead frequently changed instructions and expectations, making it difficult to perform the job effectively. Concerns raised by staff were not addressed, and the work environment became stressful and frustrating.

Overall, I did not feel valued or supported as an employee. Based on my personal experience, I cannot recommend this employer.




The work is stressful and we are often doing our best with not enough staff but they seem to be trying to hire. Working in the youth homes has been good. I have a good supervisor and support. There are many different youths and homes. There are team leaders and supervisor right in the building doing the same work we are front line when we need help. Don’t see that often and it’s good. The pay could be better it’s difficult to only have one job and the benefits could be better no spending account anymore and lots of prescriptions not covered. 

I really enjoyed front line and although I was the service coordinator the past year and half I really missed front line work with the individuals. 
I enjoyed all aspects of this job from taking them on outings to meal preparation do indoor activities as well as outreach. 
I found that the mangement part was fine although very busy, I missed working directly with our individuals.

Want to be over-stressed and under-appreciated? Then CSS is the place for you. Supervisors outright refuse to support their staff and conflict is completely ignored even if it affects the clients. You will only ever get 1 raise, even if you work there for years.
