It was clear from my time working with the City of Kamloops that they had difficulty retaining top talent. The hiring process to fill positions that needed to be filled was slow and once new people were onboarded, they would jump ship to a new opportunity in less time than it took them to be onboarded. The current management structure is across all of the departments are distant with the ground-level employees, the mid to high-level professionals, contractors, and even the consultants. In a lot of the current roles with the City, other private companies can provide competitive salary and benefits packages, which has left a lot of the "low tier" talent stuck in many positions across the department. My biggest issue is the nepotism and long-term employee promotions into departments that individuals are not even qualified to work in. This was one of the main reasons I left.

I worked for the City of Kamloops ice facilities as a operator or janitor in which is the appropriate term. Working the night shift at the rinks was a difficult task. Employees whom work before my shift were leaving close to 45 min before there shift was over. They expected myself to arrive 30 min early so they can leave. The place was a mess. Having to clean both rinks, plus edge the ice, remove all garbage, clean all offices by yourself. If you missed a spot on the floor the supervisor will make sure it's on the board for everyone to see that day. There was no effort from the previous shift to clean or help the night shift. This job was the worst job I have every had. City of kamloops is all family members giving and promoting there relatives to better positions. The benefits were great but the term "city workers " and the so called "passing the buck" is prevalent. Nobody does anything about it but complain to each other. It's a bad environment.

If I'm being honest, working at the city was pretty much what I expected. It's an okay, middle of the road organization to work with, but that does depend on your role/position. For someone in my role, I found that overall working culture to be based around stop and start mentality. Generally speaking, the leadership is poor and management lacks any sort of vision into what they want to achieve. This leads to a lot of work being re-done once tasks are completed or stopping work right in the middle of a project. The previous reviews who have brought up the pass the buck mentality is spot on for this organization. The only real benefit I had in my role was the ability to work hybrid/remote with some flexibility and an hour lunch. 


Daily routine consisted of being constantly discriminated from management, co-workers would work minimally and get praise from management. Management and supervisors were bias and showed obvious favoritism. Unless you try to suck up to your manager or supervisor, you will be treated unfairly and others who do will get preferential treatment. Human resources does not help it's workers and is the worst human resource department I've seen in all my years in the workforce. Do not work for this organization. It is poorly managed and they couldn't terminate a worker who didn't do his work. The worker ended up keeping his position and the City spent over $80K in the attempt to not even terminate him. STAY AWAY!

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Poisoning and fear culture.   They only promote the most useless people so they can keep production up

A typical day at work would be booting up all the computers, watering the plants, printing agenda for our daily real estate meeting. And many other things throughout my day.

In the beginning, the career is a great choice however management wears you down and treat you like a number and does not lift you up to your true potential. Stayed for the Pension. Then I was pushed out because I had an injury..

Good local government organization in a nice city. Lack of advancement due to unionized environment and positions available. Many people work here for life. It's a government, so expect a bureaucratic work environment. Good wages and benefits.

Bylaw/RCMP department was rife with bullying/harassment. The employee turn over was incredibly high and the culture was toxic. Used to be a good place to work. Management was void of leadership.  Not worth the stress, avoid this place. 

Great work/home balance. Good coworkers. Ability to move around to other departments.  Available overtime throughout the years. However no proper training is provided for new hires.
