The City of Lethbridge is continually growing and  is always striveing to better itself.  It consists of nearly 40 City operated businesses.  Our city officials understand we are a changing community and do their best to provide outlets and services to increase the quality of living. 

 My position at ENMAX Centre was vital in supplying entertainment and recreation opportunities to our public.  ENMAX Centre is the largest indoor entertainment venue in the City and is home to the bulk of big music, culture, and recreation. 

As a City employee you really are made to feel like your position makes a difference in the community in which you live.  A city job is the paramount example of accountability and pride in the workplace.

It can be difficult striving to complete projects underneath a very structured sprawling city business dynamic within an incredibly organic and creative industry.  The head-on challenges you face alongside a large team of varying departments/skill sets is what ultimately makes it the most enjoyable.

Typical Day at work: 
 There is no such thing as a typical day at the Purchasing Department.  Our workload depended entirely on the projects of the other departments.  One minute you can casually be finishing up a project and then you receive a number or projects in different stages and they all need our input.

Over the years I have seen many managers come and go so I have had to adjust to many different manners of managing.  Some good and some not so good but I have learnt to work with all of them and work has remained fun.

Hardest part of the job:
We had one group of supervisors that had very explosive tempers and the manager just let it happen.  Sometimes it seemed like he would set them up to fight.  In all my years that was probably the hardest space in time.

Most enjoyable part of the job:
The most enjoyable part of my job was when I learnt LiveCycle and was able to make the forms.  This was very hard as no one in the organization knew the program so I was on my own.

Working for the City of Lethbridge as a garbage truck operator can be a rewarding and challenging job. As a garbage truck operator, you will be responsible for collecting and transporting waste from residential and commercial areas in the city. This job requires physical stamina, as it involves lifting heavy trash bins and maneuvering a large vehicle through narrow streets and alleys. However, it also offers a sense of pride in keeping the city clean and safe for its residents. You will work as part of a team and be trained to operate the truck and handle waste safely and efficiently. If you enjoy working outdoors, staying active, and making a positive impact on your community, then a job as a garbage truck operator for the City of Lethbridge may be a great fit for you.

Doesn’t matter how hard you work. You will never get ahead of someone who has been there for years and even if they are a terrible worker you will still fall short. Management could care less about their employees, the union is terrible and doesn’t fight for their workers. As a union goes it only protects the not so good workers who don’t deserve a job in the first place. They continue to cut hours for seasonal workers, they don’t give out full time jobs, the managers get pay increases like crazy but the people who actually do the job and keep the city moving receive nothing but constant criticism from the public and management. 

The City of Lethbridge was good employer, in my position i was able to arrange my own workday except when an emergency came in. Some days in order to gain access to the meter to do repairs i would have to start my shift at an earlier time and possibly work later, And let my supervisor know where and what i was doing, We as city employees had a very good benefit package and the wages were very much in line, Job safety was first class, Working in the water Meter room it was a team effort , we helped each other when needed, I was very happy to have worked for the City of Lethbridge,  I retired in 1999 after 27 years of service.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The money. There is nothing else good about working for the city. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The extremely toxic environment, people in management positions that have no business being in those positions and people out in roles that have zero experience or knowledge. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
TOXIC, TERRIBLE, HOSTILE, AWFUL!!

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Running around like chickens with your head cutoff because nobody knew what they were doing.

During the summer I worked on the paving crew running rollers, skid steer, tandem trucks and physical labour. In Winter doing snow removal running front end loader, snow plows and sanders. Also in between seasons running street sweeper. Learned to work as a team to complete the job, and how to run numerous equipment safely in all weather conditions. We had a tight knit crew who worked hard and had fun. The hardest part of the job was long days in the summer heat. But I enjoyed the work and seeing the end product at the end of the day.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Great benefits and decent pay 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Management is poorly aligned and rather random 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Was good. Not so much anymore 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I dis essentially independent project management

Avoid this toxic Organization at all costs. Some Depts (not all) have the highest rates of Employee harassment claims, law suits, mental health counseling and bullying in AB! 

HR IS A JOKE! Every last one in that Dept should be fired on the spot. 

Worst Depts are Public Works, Development Service’s & Building Inspection

When i first started this apprenticeship, i didn't know what exactly i wanted to do as far as a career. I was always good at making movies and directing, but i wanted something more secure. thankfully during the apprenticeship, i realized carpentry was a way that i could get a career but also be close to something i love. it opened my eyes.
