Do you know why there are always opportunities at Burnaby and no other municipality? Turnover is so high in my department, so many people transferred out, on stress leave, or left the organization and sacrificed lower wages! If you can land something better do it! No accountability for following collective agreement since it is so vague and can be articulated to assist management. Union doesn't want to participate since it is a cost burden. Management plays favorites so do not disappoint them or you'll be discredited by every department you go to! Also creates a toxic work environment where co-workers will spy on you when you least expected. Like most auxiliaries jobs, you get lieu in benefits but get treated like you don't matter. Union doesn't help you since their goal is to get auxiliaries into full-time or part-time roles and flat out told me they are not supporting me! Human Resources aligns with management and causes more tension by not understanding the role or responsibilities of the position. Horrible organization and wouldn't recommend working here.

Because everyone in my position begins as an auxiliary worker, it can be difficult obtaining enough hours solely doing this job. Many people work other auxiliary positions within the City (or at other municipalities) to fill this need. Part-time and full-time permanent positions come very rarely and are highly competitive to obtain as the senior staff usually bid their time and are waiting to snatch the opportunity for permanent full-time work when it becomes available. 

Otherwise, the job duties are pretty standard and managers are good. Cannot complain about the work environment. 

I will start off by stating that working for The City of Burnaby has and will continue to be an immaculate pleasure. Management is run swell, and members of the team work effortlessly together. 

I have never had one issue with dynamics at my workplace and over all I feel very supported by my managers thanks to them being amazing leaders of the industry.

There is a sense of much opportunity under The City of Burnaby, and for that, it makes it motivating to work there. 

Only good things to say about this workplace, and the locations you work at are beautifully set!

It's full of hot heads who think they know everything about everything there safety officer is the worst he has to look at his book to see if you are doing your job correct or not

Canada as a country promotes importance to family life and like most organizations City of Burnaby too had an excellent work/life balance. There were work hours flexibility to accommodate family obligations as well as performance driven incentives. Social activities with colleagues and departmental get together were common. Overall office was a place people looked forward to come to. There was mutual respect for each others work space and unity thrived in a culturally diverse organization.

Burnaby takes care of their staff with competitive pay and providing a fun and inclusive environment. Their opportunity of hours are nice since we are able to choose our own hours and days we work, but managers and supervisors lack organization when it comes to scheduling and making sure your hours are correct on the schedule. ( you just have to clarify what hours you picked and don't let them push you around). There are many pros and cons to working in Burnaby... but overall I have enjoyed the last 5 years of my lifeguarding career here and call it home. 

The supervisors and bosses were great you could talk to them .
 Go to jobsite with a crew and install or repair service , sometimes get called out to an emergency , i.e. broken  water main or service . 
I learned all about pressure ,water valves and how to repair problems , took many courses for my job . Was on safety committees.
Management was the very understanding .
The hardest part was some of the work we had to do at times . 
The enjoyable part was all that I learned ,  all the wonderful people I worked with and all the wonderful people I met .

Got injured permanently after countless efforts to try to refuse unsafe work. I was off for over a year with barely any contact with the employer.  Absolutely no effort for accomadations for permanently injured workers. I was working fulltime as a auxiliary mon-fri prior to injury.  All hr could come up with over a year later was a on call position with a pay cut. 

Also the union offers barely any support and is most likely in bed with management.   Total shock that this is a government sector employer. SHADY BUSINESS!

It's nightmare joined that organization, all positions are reserved by friends even posted to the public.  In IT even nightmare that a SM joined and fired those she didn't like with immediate effect....those worked for a long time just claimed OT as much as they could even durbig vacation... big make sense....I can't believe it's a government body.....good luck to those new joiners....

Working as a lifeguard for the City of Burnaby has been a good experience overall. Typically I do safety checks, stock first aid, manage other lifeguards, guard the patrons, deal with first aid emergencies, teach fitness and swimming and more. The hardest part of the job is staying alert during long guarding shifts. The most enjoyable part for me is teaching fitness.
