Co-op Grocery Store

I loved working at coop for 2.5 years in high school and just after.  Friends who also got jobs there, created stronger friendships and an opportunity for many memories together.  I loved working hard and it was noticed but taken advantage of... I was clearly by the end of the 2 years now one of the two best cashier's, and I decided I would like more responsibilities and was hoping for a raise ... and when I asked for a raise after a 2 years with no raise, they said they didn't think I was that good at my job at all .. but said they'll give me a raise anyway .... So they gave me a one dollar raise.   Then, my close friend, the one who was the other of the top two best cashiers, they offered her a  $1 raise OR an opportunity to have a $1.25  raise as supervisor  ....

She turned down the offer, because that was a lot more work for only making 25 cents more than a brand new untrained worker, and We both quit about 6 months later. So that's my experience. The managers at the time also made it so that some workers were forced to quit, and even fired them if they just didn't like them. It was ridiculous. So it's a half and half for me... The workers were awesome and knew how to work, (most of us anyway..) and were all very proactive and tried harder all the time, the supervisors were usually pretty awesome, but the managers sucked. 

As a grocery clerk I would start my shift by sorting the new order out accordingly to be stocked efficiently.  Once order is worked then either work back stock or face products on shelves.  Assisting customers with any questions or concerns they may have.
Management was great, very friendly and not afraid to get their hands dirty with the rest of us.  General atmosphere of the store was good, good vibes all around.  Hardest part of the job would probably have to be when inventory time was coming up and management would want to try and work as much back stock as possible which was difficult when there wasn't always copious amounts if room in the designated location.  I'm a pretty sociable easy going person so I enjoyed pretty well all of it, even doing price change til late at night.

There is more responsibility placed on workers here than say fast food restaurants where everyone has a small job that contributes to the overall duty of getting the orders to the customers. Here you have specific tasks you have to get done, that differ depending on what shift you get. Falling behind effects other workers, and other workers falling behind in turn effects you which is a downside. What I enjoy about this job is that I like task based jobs because I never get bored and run out of things to do so my shifts go by reasonably fast. Management is friendly but does not always carry out their side of things efficiently. It's a good place to work when everyone is working productively.

Worked here while I was in high school and stayed for a few years after as the night crew manager. Had loads of fun with my staff and found the work very rewarding until they hired some lady that worked directly under the GM and made a brand new title just for her. She had big ideas and was trying to prove that she belonged there and decided to re-structure everything about the store starting with getting rid of night crew and letting my team of 5 employees go. They then a transferred me to daytime supervisor but still had to receive the trucks at a god awful schedule of 2-12pm. Left due to misalignment of goals between myself and management.

co-op has the most wonderful, friendliest managers, co-workers, and customers. they have great benefits and little perks to the job. The job was very simple to learn cause i've been a cashier at many places and because they provide excellent training. Working here did teach me how much I love to work/connect with people; Helping my customers and making them smile is my favorite part of being at co-op.

As security at co op i was happy with the details of job but its a very bad inviroment and bad crowds , former security officer their was met by 6 guys and jumped after his shift one night cops didnt care and neither did co op , management is horrible no over time no respect for their employees and no idea what details are needed in regards to security oficer and the laws behind having security in the facility  , i wouldnt recomend working their unless your just coming out of highschool

I loved working as a cashier here as you got to know the regulars and got to meet new people on a daily basis. The staff was amazing. My daily duties were to make sure the customer got and found exactly what they were looking for and if not I would try and help them by pointing them in the right direction or calling another employee for assistance. I actually have nothing negative to say. I enjoyed every bit of my time there

Management was unable to discipline employees to a degree in which employee productivity was acceptable. Some days were stressful due to lack of productivity from the majority of employees.

Other than this one issue, COOP Grocery provided a healthy and low-stress work environment.

If my review seems unbalanced, just look at the constant turnover and regular job postings by Killarney's Co-op Grocery Store. 
Not like the employees are going to work for better pay at another grocery store in town, there are no others!
Many coworkers quit due to being disgusted with how they were treated by Co-op management.
This is a systemic problem throughout Co-op at this location.

This was definitely a hard job to leave. It has a great union and the staff might not realize how good they got it until they're gone. I got a lot of raises for staying loyal to them and staff was amazing. I made some life-long friends from that job and was taught a lot of important skills while working there. 

If you are young and are thinking of applying here, do it. They give you a chance to show yourself despite your age or experience.
