Cochrane Toyota

I joined Cochrane Toyota with high expectations and genuine excitement about growing with the company. Unfortunately, what I experienced was a toxic and demoralizing work culture, especially within the BDC department.

From the moment I arrived, I was warned by staff about the high turnover rate — a red flag that turned out to be very real. Within my short time there, it became obvious that the turnover wasn’t due to performance issues, but because of the toxic interpersonal dynamics allowed (and sometimes enabled) by management.

There are three key issues that defined my experience:

Workplace Drama and Gossip Culture:
The work environment thrives on unnecessary drama, fueled by individuals in internal positions who seem more focused on stirring conflict than supporting the team. Instead of fostering a collaborative space, certain employees create a hostile atmosphere by gossiping, making passive-aggressive comments, and encouraging exclusionary behavior.

Lack of Leadership and Accountability:
The team lead in the BDC department did not model leadership in any form. Most of the daily work — including inbound and outbound calls, scheduling, and customer follow-ups — fell on other employees, while the team lead spent time socializing, micromanaging in petty ways, or engaging in unprofessional behavior. Despite their minimal contributions, they still held authority, creating an unfair and demotivating dynamic.

Ineffective and Dismissive Management:
The operations manager offered no meaningful onboarding or training. I was expected to know everything from day one without support or proper guidance. When I brought up concerns or asked questions, I was met with cold responses, condescension, or outright dismissal. Any issues involving workplace behavior — especially if brought up by newer staff — were ignored or invalidated. In one instance, I was told that they couldn’t speak to my character because they hadn’t known me long enough, yet they still made serious decisions about my role with no further investigation.

This approach to management creates a culture where long-standing employees are automatically believed and protected, while new hires are treated as disposable. I was promised growth opportunities, including the chance to shadow service advisors and work toward becoming one myself — none of which ever materialized. These promises felt more like recruitment tactics than genuine career development.

Terminations seem to happen often and without real accountability. I was told that only a small percentage of employees make it through the probationary period, which says more about the company’s internal issues than the staff they hire.

Overall, I left feeling defeated and devalued, not because of the work itself, but because of the people in charge and the culture they’ve allowed to flourish. If you’re considering working here, I strongly suggest avoiding the BDC department — unless you’re comfortable with constant tension, a lack of support, and a workplace where effort and professionalism are often overlooked.

When you’re first hired at Cochrane Toyota they will promise you the world. Great culture, compensation, product, treatment, and a bright future. Shortly after starting It will become abundantly clear you’ve been sold a Fool’s Paradise 

The work itself was not difficult but every step of the way your day is kneecapped by poor treatment by management, below industry average pay, high expectations with little to no gratitude. 

They have a system in place called “Excellence Reports” where you can put in complaints to help improve business operations which sounds great in theory but it is a high school maturity level tattletale system in actual use. It is essentially a giant distraction from making any meaningful change to improve working or operational conditions 

There was a consistent expectation from the Service Manager to complete online training in your personal time for zero compensation.

The schedule is all over the place, and regularly changes with little notice so it is impossible to plan your personal life around work. 

There is an expression within the company “ Make Things Better” and that seems to be the attitude towards every customer and staff member except the service department. While staff struggle to make ends meets while working extra hours on a regular basis with no overtime compensation,  way to move up in pay or position regardless of merit or money produced for the business. Yet they still wonder why they have a turn over rate higher than Cheech and Chong. 

I’d recommend any reasonably technician steers as far away as possible. 

Like the title says, you are over worked especially in The service department. They have an evening shift that they will tell you that you don't have to work but then as soon as you start it then becomes mandatory. In the winter you work 6 full days a week every second week with no time off in lieu. The service manager doesn't  know the first thing about working on a vehicle so there are tons of overbooked days that you are expected to stay for 10 plus hours 6 days a week (while the service manager shows up at 930-10 and leaves at 4). Sometimes you don't get of until 12 am during the night shift and then the next day you are expected to be there bright and early running on almost no sleep. You are expendable at Cochrane Toyota and you are treated as such. I would not recommend this job to my worst enemy due to the complete lack of management and organization. If you want to spend 99 percent of your time working and no time at home or with friends this is the job for you. I worked at a very very cheap independent shop and even the equipment there was better, Cochrane Toyota has some very very run down equipment. They don't seem to spend any money to improve the technicians work experience.

At first seemed like a great place to learn the car industry but the Management was very old school, bullying and not training staff properly then throwing staff under the boss for not reaching goals. If you are in the old gang club you will be fine, they look out for each other. If you are not watch out. They will bully you out the door. For a small town dealership that should care about their reputation on how they treat their staff it is surprising how wlling they are to treat staff like dirt.  They constantly watch you on cameras so don’t slip up.. You can stay late 90%of the time but if you are 1 minute late one day look out. Be prepared for many late shift hours of work for the non core workers with no thanks, No family life balance allowed. It’s all about making money.  Management will throw staff under the bus to deflect blame. It is a fear culture, unless you are in the core group.  If you want a team environment don’t  apply here. It’s every man for himself and watch your back.  It’s a terrible place to work . Long hours for little pay and very clicky.  Most people realize the Management and pay is better at  most fast food restaurants . Safe yourself a big headache and don’t apply to work here.

What is the best part of working at the company?
This company is very unpredictable! It seems like they are on your side but please watch your back. They seem sincere, but again, be prepared for surprises. I would highly not recommend to work here. The upper Management is clueless and certain long term staff will cut your throats. Don't say I told you so when you get fired with no warning!! Good Luck

The staff, the staff, the staff, the long term employees....watch out . They do not appreciate hard work and dedication, in fact if you kiss butt that is the way to there hearts, so if you can do that then your Golden

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
You cant do your job because you are to worried about whats going on around you

If I could tank management worth a zero I would.  Management strives for the dollar and not the professional relationship they preach.  If customers could see how sales people are hired and fired so quickly they would never respect this place.  So many managers have come and gone and good ones at that.  Those who remain could care les about the personal impact this type of management has on people and their lives outside of work.  "Everyone is replaceable" is their motto. If you don't fit in to their short term strategy then you will be terminated.  One of the most mismanaged dealerships ever, from the appointment co ordinator to sales people and everyone in between you dont matter to Cochrane Toyota and you're efforts are expected at the next level at every turn, nothing will be good enuff.  Jeez, even management can't cut it and stick to there own immorals.  Avoid this place like Covid.

Come in to fake people saying good morning in there best fake voice.
I learned that you can't trust anyone in that department and if they don't like you look out. keep your eyes open and head on a swivel.
No help from management, they all think everyone is dumb and their the grand pubas.
There were many nice people in other departments, nice to talk with and they saw what I was going through but kept their heads down and said nothing, because and I was told if they say anything they will be gone immediately, no warning.
Hardest part of the job was working with fake people and getting no help when asked. Hearing all the behind your back chatter.
Most enjoyable part besides finally getting to go home at night, there were a few good people who really did care about you.

Working at Cochrane Toyota has been a fantastic experience. The management team is truly supportive, always encouraging us to grow professionally and personally. They provide excellent training programs that have helped me develop my skills and advance in my career. The work environment is also very positive, with a team that's friendly and always ready to help each other out.

The company values both customer satisfaction and employee well-being, making sure that the staff are happy and motivated. The benefits package is competitive, and they offer flexible working hours, which is a huge plus.

I've built great relationships here and feel genuinely appreciated for my hard work. If you're looking for a place that values your contribution and where you can really make a difference, Cochrane Toyota is the place to be!

I find the management team here to be great; they hire a diverse mix of people from all kinds of backgrounds and all over the world. I'm lucky to say that I genuinely like coming to work. It's nice to go to work knowing you'll be working with very friendly and talented people.

Working with the Toyota brand in a smaller town has also been a pleasure as it seems that there is more focus on being part of a community, which means more focus on people and less on selling or "hitting quotas."  The commute to and from work is also relatively quick and low key. I would recommend working here as an alternative to the cutthroat and pressured version of a dealership in the city.

My typical day is going through freight which is the part of the job I like to do because I feel like I'm good at it. I'm a bit on the weak side so all the heavy lifting that I have to do almost every day gets me pretty exhausted so I'd say that's the hardest part of the job. I learned how to input and receive parts into a computer system and how to let customers and our service team know parts have arrived. All my co-workers have been nice and friendly which is always a great thing in any workplace.
