The housekeeping staff (environmental services dept) are a good bunch of people. They are committed to their performance and supportive of each other. Management and Scheduling are a bit of a mess. Housekeeping director does not do the scheduling, they have a scheduling department for that, so the shifts are a bit crazy and unpredictable. Housekeeping management is very disorganized and doesn't seem to do a good job with understanding the needs of the people working in this department. Shifts are never consistent; if you work part time you will be forced to take day, evening, and night shifts not in any type of sequence. The upside to this is the pay.

I really enjoyed working at the hospital.. met so many people from all different  way of life. There was always room to grow. I was a switchboard operator in my last 5 years , before that I was in patient registration . I went through 6 different computer changes in my 30 years service. I enjoyed every moment of my working years.  I love people as they enjoyed my disposition . Being fluent in both language French and English made my job easy. I work mostly unsupervised . I retired when Covid was at its highest peak. Now, I need to get out in the work world again. 

A typical work day is a 12hr day or night shift. Although it is a busy environment that staff are amazing and willing to help in any way they can. A great team of nurse, physicians, managers and other members of the healthcare team who constantly work collaboratively together to achieve optimal patient outcomes. The hardest part of the job is the busy patient load that comes with each day but what makes it enjoyable is that you actually get to put your nursing skills to work and you continue to learn more and more about the nursing profession each day.

Non union staff are always at a risk of being fired with no reason (restructuring). 
The hospital is very mismanaged that they often need to cut cost, and the easy target is usually non unionized staff.  And because they care about reputation within town (small community), unfortunately, these random firings, end up usually impacting people who moved to work there from out of town and minorities more than those from town. 

On the positive side, it is a fabulous place to work if you are unionized (nurse, clerk, lac tech, pharmacist, etc) as the unions rule the place. 

I have been working in the same environment for 25 plus years.  It has been fun but at the age of 60 I would like to retire from my current job and work part time until age 65.  I do not feel like I am ready to quite working and have plenty of work time left in me.  I am always willing to learn new skills and would like the opportunity to do so.  If there is any positions part time available please contact me so we can discuss meeting etc.

A non supportive Managers,  CEO is only about politics, not interested on the mental well being of her over worked staff. PSW'S are the back bone of bedside care for all patients, they are under rated and paid . To much favoritism , clicks among nursing staff to wards PSW'S , housekeeper, etc. The only thing positive is the experience on what you can learn and take away to another job for experience. 

The hardest part of my job is watching patients wait to go back to rooms when the porter are going fast as they can and as Housecleaner I see and have to explain too them why they are waiting so long we are always asked the most questions when it comes to the patient we interact more than anyone at the hospital

working as a Registered nurse at cornwall hospital is awful! you are not respected for your education, you are treated at the same level as a PSW and expected to do their jobs, while the PSW's just hang around talking. The nurse is basically treated as though its the 1950's. doctors get all the respect at this hospital. If your a doctor I recommend working here but as a nurse no way!
