I was supposed to have a 30 day and 60 day review, but those never happened. I would ask the Ops Supervisor when we were meeting for them and he said "soon, but I will always tell you if there's something we're not happy with or need you to change", so I thought I was doing fine, but then they let me go after "reviewing my 2.5 months at CanWel". 

On top of that, there's not one single person in the office/warehouse that I can think of that the Ops Supervisor and Admin Clerk did not bad mouth to me (starting on my first day), including the Branch Mgr and Regional Mgr. They were continually whispering between themselves and I always felt like I had to have my back up. It was constant negativity every single day. 

The senior employees ran the office, with none of the managers willing to stand up to them. They let those employees talk down to other staff consistently, while never getting reprimanded. The attitudes that the senior staff would come in with were so abhorrent and would disrupt the office, but never addressed in a permanent manner so it would be the same thing day after day.

Also racism was quite rampant, with often supervisors attacking other races, or commenting that indigenous protesters should be "shot in the street" among other things. 

My actual work was extremely boring, with maybe having a total of 3.5 hours of work to do per day, as the other clerk was unwilling to delegate anything to me, and the managers did not step in. 

I would not recommend CanWel to anyone.

A typical day at work  involves  contact with my clients who are Home Improvement Stores ,  dealers  and  truss manufactures. I answer  all technical inquiries and price all of the engineered wood products.  I also have product knowledge of all allied buildings products that CanWel building materials  distribute.

I have learned  to be proficient at my job as I usually have several inquiries that I am assisting customers with.  

My co-workers  are great  and all of the sales representatives help each other if required.

Our management team is very open and if I make a suggestion to improve the flow of  daily  business  function they will discuss it.

I find the hardest  part of my  job is  sometimes  we  can not have an order  ready  in time  for a customer  as  our  yard is just  very  busy.
I do not like to let  a customer  down  as  I know that it does affect their business.

I enjoy  my  job  as I am using  the  skills  that  I have  trained for as a  technologist.

Working at the Blainville branch has been an incredibly rewarding experience. There’s a strong culture of respect, open communication, and genuine support. Management is approachable and never bossy; they lead by example and trust their team to thrive.

If you're looking for a workplace that combines professionalism with warmth and camaraderie, this is the place to be.

The company is fine for a paycheck and benefits - don't expect good wages/salary though.

I get the impression they don't want to admit it's 2020 or something and so plenty of policies, practices and ways of doing things are about 20 years behind and extremely convoluted/complicated when they totally don't need to be. VERY little trust placed in the employees. There's this sort of fear that actually empowering employees will somehow make the company collapse. I don't mind all the usual bumps and bruises that come with working in any environment - no company is perfect after all but I draw the line at being treated like a child.

I've never seen trust issues like this anywhere I've worked. It's almost as fascinating as it is embarrassing.

I think it's an OK place to work if you're looking at one of the warehouse or sales positions and staying put for a while (provided your needs are met financially) but anything else would likely set your career back a decade or two.

There are good people in this company, however the leadership here is disorganized and detached from the their workforce 
they speak of equality and non division but they won't inform their employees of even the most trivial plans.

they have a severe lack of concern for their employees or the circumstances they work in.

Examples being Unsafe practices with their equipment
their facility has bats and pigeons living throughout the building leaving feces in mass on the floor and on products. 

they Do not grant raises regularly or to help balance the offset between cost of living and and wage. 

the overall morale of their work force is low and generally one of resentment for their job.


i am not a disgruntled employee trying to take a stab at the company
my hope one day someone takes a closer look into this company to 
help those individuals who believe themselves stuck in their jobs now.

This company initially had me excited about the potential for career advancement within the company, until you spend enough time there and begin to see the cracks. Management is toxic at the upper level, which has lead to turnovers and general malaise in the workplace. It's hard to work for someone you know is dishonest and has an established track record of such behavior, including harassment of employees. 

Benefits are above average and pay is below average. The company provides a reasonable amount of amenities for employees. 

Feeling as though you are a valuable member of a team is crucial to long term careers. When you have a manager who goes out of their way to let you know that you can be let go at anytime, it creates an environment of uncertainty and distrust. 

This company needs an enema at the manager level.

If you are looking for an opportunity to work somewhere that brings meaning to your day to day tasks, a place that is considerate, where people are happy and the Managment supports and contributes to the team this is not the place for you! Calgary has one of the most run down decrepit dingy dank and dirty warehouse and yard facilities that I has seen in the past 20 years. It would not be so bad if there was actually a plan to fix the place up, but instead close your door, put your headphones in and launch your video games! You’ll get along with the manager there just fine! 

CanWel Calgary is a great company to work for. The staff are fantastic people and we have had a lot of fun over my time there.Over the last number of years management has not been the best choice as they have not come from the industry and have their own direction not necessarily consistent with the building material industry.
Hardest part of my job is the stress related to the lack of communication between Sales/management/Operations.
The most enjoyable part of my job is the collaboration between myself and my staff, our customers and the men and women I work with who I call family everyday.

I certainly have no serious complaints about Canwel. Managers are easy to work with, and give you a lot of leeway as you're learning.

Below the management level there seems to be too much tolerance for toxicity, but the managers may not even be aware of it.

The pay is laughably low for what the job entails and what you're expected to learn. Especially when it comes to Canwel as a company and their processes. There are no SOPs, and it often feels like one person will tell you one thing, while another tells you the opposite. 

I was employed here for 2 years. It is the WORST job!! Let's start with the safety hazards, they have custom machines contractors came in to build. They are not properly regulated... be ready to lose limbs... then onto the Heath. The chemicals they use will leave you at a loss for breath. LITERALLY! And onto wages. They don't even come close to compensating for what you'll be asked to do! Above all that your coworkers and management is awful. Don't expect to find help when you need it. But when you make a mistake they'll be sure to be there to scrutinize you. Like I said. If you're smart. Work at timmies or McDonald's where you know you'll be safe!
