A typical day at work: Show up to open the store, painters already at the door like starving vultures. Not enough staff, so handle the first hour or two alone. If even ONE retail customer comes in during the morning rush you are absolutely screwed and will have lots of angry painters. Depending what store you work at you will have some time between customers to work on store projects, catch up on paperwork, put away stock, or just relax OR you will be slammed all day and possibly miss your lunch/stay late. Customers can be really grouchy and are often not very smart. Whenever they have a problem they just blame the paint store, and then they come in and I prove them wrong. 

What I learned: People are really dumb. Also, Dulux doesn't like to keep their stores fully staffed. Makes it really hard on those doing the work of two or three people.

Management: Your manager might care about you if you have a good one, but don't expect anyone higher up on the food chain to care.

Workplace culture: Nearly everyone is depressed and talks about quitting on a daily basis. If you have a good team that you are friends with you can at least gripe about work together.

The hardest part of the job: Pretending to care. Standing at a wall of color chips with an office full of overdue paperwork looming in your mind, painters waiting impatiently to be helped and those twelve cups of coffee screaming to be let out of your bladder, but you can't get to any of it because this lady can't decide which shade of beige best matches her laminate flooring.

The most enjoyable part of the job: I made some of the best relationships of my entire life here.

I was employed at Georgetown ON, location for a short period of time and was literally the whipping boy there. Customers were trash and didn't like seeing new faces and had rude comments about me being a new employee in front of the novice but power hungry manager. Managers don't have the best interest of the employees in mind and also don't like to pay as I didn't receive pay in over a month of uninterrupted attendance and no response about my pay from the store manager from the time of pay period to 5 days later when I quit in front of the district manager which was doing the store managers dirty work. They allow customers to belittle new employees for the sake of keeping large contractors and their big money purchases. The silly manager also enjoyed cutting hours without saying anything. So a 34 hour week would be reduced to 16 and 39.5 hour week would be reduced to 17 just because she can. I do not recommend this store or company for employment. Stay away.

-Ability to have a large territory and have multiple avenues of business from achitectural paints, epoxy coatings, powder coatings, to line lasers ,spray machines and hoses and shop equipment. Wide range of vendours at your disposal.
-work environment was mostly macro managed by leadership which was rewarding for myself as I felt my hard work was deserving of autonomy. This also gave me the feeling from management/leadership I was the essence of what they wanted to portray to their clientele. They had no need to ensure I was doing what they expected...in fact over achieving!
-their was a culture of healthy competition to drive the sales team which I felt was a must-have
-I gained a large amount and wide range of knowledge with regards to corrosion protection, paint & coatings, paint/coatings processes, applicable tools and machinery such as line lasers & spray equipment. I would say they provided excellent opportunity to learn and succeed if you want to!!

Served 12 years.  Started out as a warehouse worker.  Putting away stock, cleaning and maintaining a neat, safe and presentable work environment.  Helped customer(s) by bringing paint out to their vehicle(s).

Over the course of 12 years, I've learned about different application(s) for different paints and industrial product(s).  Learned to match competitors colours, built strong customer service and relationship(s) with our clientele base.  Ship product(s) to job sites and receive product(s) from our central distribution centre and outside vendor(s).  Great camaraderie with co-workers, sales team and management.

The staff would always pull together when a large project would present itself.  Sometimes there'd be personality conflicts and rare confrontations, but at the end it'd be laughed off and we all look to the next day.

The main challenge-remaining patient with customer(s) who sometimes do not know what to use or what the application(s) for.

Dulux is a great company. They provide the basic needs for employees to shine in their work. Employees are required to wear a uniform and trained to efficiently and safely perform their duties in selling paint and other related products.
There are several stores all over Toronto and the success of a store will depend on the team that's running it.  My team is composed of very nice people, we take time to know each others expectations and we all strive to earn our quarterly incentives doing hard teamwork.
The hardest part of this job is having a mis-tint.  Although we use a computer to analyze colour samples, much of the colour matching is done by eye and chance. A drop of one wrong colour can make a difference in the end result (which is most of the time a shade darker).
Overall, I think Dulux is a great employer. I do appreciate the skills that I developed by being employed with the company. These skills I now plan to bring to another level, maybe a mobile job in Sales and Merchandising.

Each day is different. Some days you are so busy it's hard to find time for a break other day's it can be so slow you have to find things to do. Most customers are great but with every retail job you get that one customer that is horrid.
It can be very physically demanding and to much is expected sometimes of good employees and not so good employees are not held to the same standards. Most managers are late to arrive, early to leave but quick to point out if your late and expect you to stay after your shift if it is busy.
Minimum wage job with next to no raise yearly that is not based on your performance of job or years of service but on someone sitting in head office who you have never met and never will decides what their budget will allow. 
Decent benefits but is expensive when you make so little.
Most managers and staff are great people.

My time at Dulux was okay but it could have been better. The location I was at management was very clicky and didn't really make an effort make me feel super welcomed or even try to get to know me as a person. The other staff members did make an effort and I was able to enjoy my days when I was working with them. This job has so much you must learn and it is hard to remember it all right off the bat but you are expected to absorb it all right from the get go. The other issue I had with this job is there are times where you must work alone and be able to handle very over the top abusive customers. The stores don't have security cameras so if anything does happen there will be no proof to back you up other than your word against theirs. The only other good thing is you do get a bonus if the store you work at hits the sales target for the month.

Dulux Paints was a great place to work, The days would consist of doing a daily deposit opening the register also closing the store and register, tinting paint and getting orders ready for contractors, customers, and sending orders to other store locations. A lot of the time working at Dulux Paints was working alone and lots of multi tasking. The most enjoyable part of the job was feeling professional and confident about what I was talking about when selling product, we had lots of great training courses, I also enjoyed being with the 3 co-workers I worked with. It was a small store I worked for but it was a great place to work.

You will spend your day helping mostly commercial customers who range from friendly and patient, to abusive and demanding. You will work with a small, tight-knit staff of 4-8 employees, with generally only 2-5 working on a given day. Expect to be regularly lifting 50-75 lb pails, anywhere from a dozen to a few hundred a day. You will always be understaffed, and this is by design. The pay is too low to attract and keep employees. Upper management is only concerned with meeting sales and profit targets. Local management does their best and will listen to your concerns, but are mostly unable to make any changes re: pay, safety, hiring, workload.

As  awesome as most of your coworkers are, management sadly destroys the fun of this job. They only view you as a number and if you're not hitting your sales goals you'll be shown the door. Unrealistic expectations are also a big one. Let's say your store made 80K in March, the following year you'll need to make at least 110-130K in March or you'll be let go. They expect you to magically bring in an extra 30K a month out of thin air. You'll be written up if you don't help out other stores, so if you don't drive you won't last long. It's also extremely hard to get paint right now. First they blamed covid for the raw material shortage and now they're blaming the war in Ukraine for the shortage. This company operates in the 1950's so expect your workplace culture to be like that.
