Eagle Nest Community and Aboriginal Services

The organization has different group homes for the kids, three (3) care worker is placed to work in each home on an eight (8) hour shift and our responsibilities were to attend to the needs of the kids by preparing the meals for the kids, taking them to school and other activities which are on their daily plans and making proper documentation on their food plan, hygiene, medication intake and any other complains from teachers and other instructors on their individual performance of their daily activities in school or out of school.
I learned from management on how to handle the kids, especially the  troubled ones, how to effectively communicate with them so as to enable them open up on issues troubling them and how to provide a productive solution to their problems to create a win-win solution at the end of the day.
Working in this organizations, we were all encouraged to work as a team so as not to be manipulated by the kids and i would as it was an excellent experience working with my co-workers because we all worked in unity even though we may disagree on some solution, we all had to go with the best ideas and solutions. 
The hardest part was seeing the kids sad sometimes and not having the power to really make them open up and just giving them time to process their feeling. Sometimes the kids might open up and other times they end up acting out.
The enjoyable part was weekends when we take them for various activities, for example Movies, parks, a trip to the country side of town to ride on horse or receive lectures on how to improve themselves and employing them to start thinking of their plans for the future.

As someone in their late 40s, I had high hopes of this company, as they (the hiring staff in Kamloops) are younger than 35 welcomed me with open arms. However, they put me on another 3 month probation after my 1st three months were up, saying that "They knew that I could be a better employee".  hey fired me just short of my being there 6 months, with not so much as a (valid) excuse; they completely blindsided me. They don't seem to work well with people over the age of 30. They said I "did not work well with others", which is ridiculous, as I treated everyone with respect, and dignity. But interestingly, some of them did not treat me with the same respect. Everyone was nice to you, until they weren't. I got tired of working with (and for) the "soft generation", as they didn't seem to get or understand my ideas or thoughts. Everyone seemed to take a "mental health day" when they  needed it. I took two days off, and I had a number of major life events happen (including a car accident, in which I showed up for work the next day after). I did enjoy for the most part, working for the company, and I was sad when they let me go. They let go someone who had a lot of life experience, and who was an excellent employee.

Care providing as a job itself is stressful and takes mental, emotional, and physical strength to complete. This can often be supplemented with the help of a great management team that supports the ups and downs of care providing as well as debriefing escalated situations. This is not a reliable company to count on in that aspect. The management team is unreliable, as well as struggles with staffing and being able to fill shifts due to a condescending on-call service.

There is much room for advancement due to the manager roles and key provider roles not being compensated properly for the extra work it entails, leaving these roles to have high turnover rates or to remain empty for the better part of a year.

That being said, the certifications and experience gained from this job were remarkable. The networking opportunities out of it were also incredible as you work with a diverse range of clients and assist them through their life goals.

Also, if you are hoping for a good reference from management or the director, you will be happy to hear that managers are not supposed to give out references and the director will not email you back unless they need something from you. Your coworkers will be your best form of support and probably end up being your closest friends in your time there. Be sure to set good boundaries and best of luck.

I have gone through 3 different job titles during my time at ENCAAS and have thoroughly enjoyed each of my positions.  I felt supported the entire way through, and was able to fine-tune my professional skills and gain valuable experience. The wages at ENCAAS are fair and overtime is often available to ensure the needs of the individuals are met at all times. ENCAAS was flexible and supportive while I was completing my post-secondary education by giving me the time off needed to be successful and working around my school schedule. I never had a problem taking vacation days when working at ENCAAS. The work can be difficult at times as are most human service jobs, but the work is extremely rewarding. There are many senior staff, management, and directors who can assist in navigating difficult situations in addition to a 24/7 Emergency Response Manager. I highly recommend ENCAAS as an employer.

Coming from an experienced background, I would say that this company does the best they can with the resources given to them. Management and most of the longterm staff , truly care deeply about helping those in need. It can be a very high stress job that will wear you out emotionally, and the long term staff have stuck it out for so many years. I think that in itself proves how supportive they are to eachother. They try to promote a family and team environment and do the best they can. This job has its easy going days  an can be emotionally draining, however,  if you want to truly help others and be a positive influence to youth in care or support adults in need, working here is a great place to start. The training you get is very thorough and there is always going to be someone there for you if you have questions. You can always ask for extra training or job shadows but hands on experience is best. 

When I first started at ENCAAS I was very excited for a new opportunity and to further myself In the career field. However, things quickly went down hill. One huge problem is management, they are super disorganized and really don’t care about training new employees properly. I was tossed around between 4 managers in my first week which makes getting a sense of proper training really tough to grasp. The starting pay is a joke compared to their industry competition. They start you at minimum wage, then you go up to $18/h (their competition pays $21.92). The atmosphere is really bad and I wouldn’t bother applying to this company until they can sort out their management department and get a sense of organizational skills. Really disappointed in my time with the company and I would not recommend them. 

ENCAAS has a training program developed to give those without schooling the proper and necessary training to become a successful care provider. Throughout my years with ENCAAS, I have received the upmost support and care from the management team. (which in this line of work we know is so deeply important.) ENCAAS has shown me as a human being how a supportive work place and in-depth training can change your whole perspective on what a work place and the support it gives should look like. I cant recommend them enough just based off of the training and support. They truly set you up for success on caring for youth and individuals in the community. 10/10 

Eaglenest only pays minimum wage while you train, this is not suitable or possible for the cost of living currently in BC, the training can range from 11 shifts up to more if you are an Outreach worker. They won't give chances or opportunities if you make a mistake, they will just fire you and accuse you of dishonesty for a misunderstanding, the place is not supportive unless it meets their needs and I am beyond grateful I learnt this so soon on in the start of the position I was offered. Glad I dodged a bullet. Take your HCA experience elsewhere for a more fair wage and less toxic environment. 

The typical day would be working with youth at risk which is rewardable and the most enjoyable part was making a difference for the persons served. However, the cons was working in a stressful environment with coworkers and management gossiping about one another. And be aware of applying, they will deny your application right away because of your history with them if you had a good working relationship or not, and cannot have any health issues working with this company. 

Ensure the safety and wellbeing of the youth; provided guidance and emotional support; taught coping techniques and adaptive behaviour. Provide behaviour management and youth development on a one-to-one or group basis by providing feedback on the youth’s behaviour. Ensure communication and liaison between group home, school, family, and the community. Ensured that the youth’s needs are met by teaching basic hygiene skills, preparing meals, and administering medication. Maintain reports such as logbooks and daily activities on the youth.
