This company is great for single guys who don't have a family.  You are expected to be on call 24/5.  + weekends every few weeks.   Monday to Friday answering calls day and night and going out as needed by customers. Sometimes going out at 10pm working till 2am to fix a machine.  They say this is a sales job, but it is really 95% service and 5% sales.  (TM - Territory Manager position)

Start month with a set number of commitments given by Ecolab, you have to visit and inspect all equipment on customer site and have them sign off.  Any issues you fix.  Can be anywhere from 50-80 customers to visit.   Basically have 20-25 days to do this each month.  Then are expected to hit budget given by Ecolab each month by going out and selling.  On top of this, you answer all pages from Ecolab on your own phone  regarding customer problems.  As mentioned before can be anytime of the day.  Monday to Friday.   No compensation.  Can work 5am till 2am next day and no day off.  No compensation.

Company manager mentality is "if it has worked the past 90 years it works now"  90 years ago, a lot has changed... even in basic labour rights. 

Co workers are amazing and will help you out.  If you need coverage they have to cover your territory and their own.  and you do same for them, or you wont be getting time off.  

Weekend on Calls, you will have to do anywhere from every 3 weeks to 10 weeks.  Depending on location.  You are responsible for the whole district (all your co workers territories and your own) to answer all calls from 5pm on Friday till Monday 6:30am.  Sometimes you can get 20 calls all weekend, so don't make any plans to do anything or go anywhere.  Want to go see a movie?  (you cant) want to have friends over (you can, but be prepared to leave them) All calls need to be answered in the hour, and you should be on site in a reasonable time.  Customer can be very demanding and do not understand or care that we have no compensation for weekend on call or extra calls. 

Benefits - Car for personal use, however you have to log the kms. if you go over a certain amount, you pay in taxes for it.  Keep under 5%.  Set own hours (as long as you meet commitments, hit budget and answer all customer requests)

Excellent training program.  Fly you to US for hotel and food, 5 weeks total (1 week US, 1 week Canada Training etc.)
Learn a lot, teachers are amazing, co workers are helpful, you need to have this support to survive this job. 

Parts are hard to come by, sometimes have to drive hours to pick up a part from another district, or drive to head office to pick up chemical and deliver to customer ( even though they say you are not allowed to put these 20L pails of chemicals in your car as per policy, for labour laws it is against the rules, but you do it anyway as is expected. 


There is no transparency regarding what you buy in your terriroty, they tell you its worth this $$$ this much and your 50k salary you start with goes to about 5k or less and the rest is you owning your territory on commission, if customers don't buy, you don't get paid.  

This company could easily pay out 100% dental and medical, but only 80% coverage.  They make a lot of money and overcharge customers.

If you want to be treated like a second class citizen, please apply to this job. Nalco is a great company but unfortunately there are too many managers but no management in Fort McMurray and by the time the customer needs Nalco the most, Area and District Managers are too busy playing Curling, watching movies on their Ipads or which is even worse, sleeping inside the offices provided to them by the customer or telling employees under their supervision they are not "engaged" or you misunderstood everything due your communication issues. For these managers, being not engaged means not following their orders although this means doing a huge one time sale and putting on jeopardy the account in the future losing the customer's loyalty. After this, Managers will blame employees under supervision washing their hands for any responsibility of their mistakes. Managers in Fort McMurray don't have any qualifications or any background to justify their job positions, they still have their positions for unknown reasons. They don't want to recognize that people need to be recognize for their hard work and sacrifice to achieve of this great company.
Right now, Nalco Management at the headquarters in US must take actions, otherwise, Nalco will start losing business and customers sooner rather than later. Do you know how many Nalco's employees have landed with competitors in the last two years. Managers in Fort McMurray, AB think that people who left Nalco are idiots, that they won't be successful at other company than Nalco and they are wrong

I worked for Ecolab for 3 years.  The perks are attractive, but the pay is minimal for the amount of travel and after hours time that will be required.  You will be on salary and will not be compensated for a great deal of your efforts.  You are expected to get out there and sell sell sell, but you are not compensated with commission for your sales efforts.  You are told that you will only be on call once every 8=10 weekends, however customer service will contact you regardless of whether or not you are on call.  Customer service is in the states, you will be expected to take calls on Canadian stat holidays.  The travel estimation provided is well undershot, expect to spend a significant amount of time in hotels.  During my tenure, there was 1 rep in each province in the west.  Hopefully that has increased, but it gives you an idea of what the travel expectations are really like.  Essentially, you must be available 7 days a week, around the clock to respond to customers.  If you are a single individual who is looking to learn the ropes of sales, this may be a good fit for you.  Getting to drive a company vehicle for personal use, not having to worry about gas and insurance are some nice extras that raise the value of the total compensation package, but $40,000 to start won't pay the bills for many.  If you have a family or significant other, I would recommend looking elsewhere.  There are sales positions out there with better salaries and far less in the way of travel requirements.

As a Material Handler, you need at least 2 people to execute this position successfully with co-operation and understanding from both drivers as the line will run non-stop. This is a one man job, keep that in mind, you will feel the pressure most of the time. You'll barely take your break because you want to make sure you catch up and meet to their standards in preparation for a new batch to run. The guy that trains you when you start is not an actual trainer. He's just a regular employee that will give you the rundown once with arrogance to his tone if you ask twice. A class act. You will gradually feel the anxiety before the start of each shift, guaranteed.. I did. 

Management is very poor so they won't empathize nor comprehend all of the above, just get it done. HR is your best bet if that. Culture wise, Ha! If they like you, they will help you, if they don't they will conspire to fire you even if you're good at your job. Hence this review.

Lastly, if you can handle all of the above? Congrats! You got a job for a very long time. Great benefits, wage, veterans to show you the ropes, free lunches, holiday gift cards and a Ecolab pin. All the best.

Responsible for preparing and delivering business plans in Edmonton refinery chemical market. Sales goal was to have double digit growth with new sales and keep attrition to zero. A typical day at work involved working directly with the customers to solve problems and implement solutions that have a positive impact on their bottom line for profitability. I mentored and trained the younger sales group in Edmonton. Safety is a priority and this was always shown to customers and co-workers. 

In my career with this company I have had sales roles as a product manager in marketing, District Manager and District Account Manager. My technical experience comes from working with drilling fluids, well stimulation, oil field chemistry, refinery, upgrading and tar sands.

The most enjoyable part of my career has always been working with customers so we can establish relationships to do business.

Basically I was hired as a pick/order and was only with the company for 3 months. I asked for one week off to go overseas to my brother's wedding and I was told there was no problem with that. About several weeks before the wedding I get a letter saying that they did not need me after I came back from the wedding and that I violated the contract. This would have helped If they would have let me know at that time, instead of saying it was ok in the first place. The pay was good at $23.50 hr, but apparently when I was talking with the other employees they said it is a hard company to get into. This one employee told me he was working there for a year and they only kept him because the guy he was replacing had cancer and they did not know when he was coming back, another guy started a week before me and basically was replacing someone who just retired from the company. So it was bad timing on my part. Such was my fate.

Be prepared to be on call 24/7, 365 days/yr. If you don't get back to customer within an hour, regardless of what you are doing, you will be reprimanded. Even on your vacation time, you are expected to work. If you don't, if anything goes sideways with a customer, it's still your fault even though your team is supposed to be covering for you (which they don't). Management treats you very poorly. They promise a lot of things and never follow through with them. They can really sell you on how great the job is, which they will. I guess, after all, it is their job to be good salesmen/women. They will not help you and expect you to get a 6 hour job done in an hour. Oh and if you don't, you guessed it, you'll be reprimanded. If you want to be stressed for the rest of your life, not have a life and treated horribly, this is the company for you. Good luck!

Work closely with the manger, corporate accounts and upper management with any concerns with the customer to make sure that the customers needs are met and we get paid
Looked after 1400 accounts at one time, with some of them very high profile and demanding.
The most satisfy part of the job was building customer relationships and receiving payment for outstanding invoices.
The hardest part of the job was getting someone to pay there bill if I couldn't get them on the phone.
Being able to multi task as different situations are brought to your attention.. (working on one account and then another issue needs to be addressed asap.

Started after the merger with Champion Technologies. Good benefits, and have great technical resources from within the company. However, after the merger there seems to be a purge going on internally that unfortunately has gotten rid of a lot of good people and kept arguably the worst. It seems like selling as much BS to your manager in order to move up is the current trend within the company rather than actually focusing on the customer.

The worst part is that middle management is the most guilty of this and it's unfortunate because I think it'll ultimately have a very negative impact on the company.

The company still have it's upsides but it's quickly becoming worse as time goes on.

One stayed busy from morning to night. Besides daily, weekly and monthly work plans and scheduling the on call 24/7 for service maintenance was a requirement. Monthly budgets and annual budgets were also a requirement. The hardest part of the job was to be interrupted during family time and have to go on an emergency service call. I learned with this company how to manage not only my time but the customers needs. I could only sell what I believe in and my job was to ensure use cost was the important ingredient to save money with this program and products for the customer. The traveling was fun and I managed to enjoy the trips and scenery as I enjoy driving.
