As a research assistant, workplace culture depends on the professor you work with. Some are absolutely fantastic, some others not so much (not supportive, rude, terrible group management).
If you are lucky enough to find a supportive group, you'll have the chance to work on multiple projects (very stimulating) with a variety of people (students, companies, other researchers). I loved that Polytechnique is very international, you get to meet people from various countries and learn so much of their culture.
Biggest problem, some people pay little to no attention to instruments and as a result, most of the time they are broken or temporarily out of order.

•	Developing a computationally efficient hybrid model that accounts for grout and fluid thermal capacities which could be incorporated in energy simulation programs 
•	Proposing an axi-symmetric transient numerical model of the ground in the vicinity of boreholes
•	Designing, constructing, instrumenting and commissioning  a novel small-scale experimental apparatus to validate the current models and to provide a database for future works (utilizing and calibrating thermistors, RTDs, thermocouples and flow meter)
•	Investigating the effect of borehole thermal capacity on prediction of annual COP of geothermal heat pumps 
•	Researching on hybrid geothermal-solar systems

Our research group consists in understanding and optimizing the functional properties of semiconductor films for electronic devices. I trained to design and deposit semiconductor films with specific structural and morphological properties. Our supervisor was very  productive and innovative  to lead the group. In addition the co-workers were very hard- working students. The hardest part of the job was fabrication of the micro-scale substrates in clean room; however team cooperation and scientific discussion during work were very enjoyable and useful.

Working as a Ph.D student, you know.  You might be studying the function and regulation of membrane proteins or doing a computational analysis of the conductivity of different battery designs, but that doesn't mean your PhD project must revolve around similar projects. The transition between college or another research job to a PhD program is one of the main transitions in your life when it is perfectly acceptable to completely change research areas.

It is so boring and become worse everyday.
I learned nothing is fair and horrible people occupy better places.
Knowledge is not important in polytechnique.
Co-workers and professors are interesting but very moody.
The hardest part is communication with bizarre people.
There are very facilities and kind technicians there to help you.

Intellectual and friendly working environment in collaboration with professors, research supervisors and undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate students. Organized and professional teamwork activities and consultations.

Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal is the leader in MMW research in Montreal and one of the bests in North America. The collaboration with industry is very good and many projects are coming directly from industry.

The hours of work are flexible. The work is self directed with the support of knowledgeable experts. I like working in the creative environment with these bright individuals.

Polytechnique offers plenty of laboratories and equipment, you can take advantage of very knowledgeable old supervisors and professors, enjoying very qualified technicians, however, not everyone can survive in that atmosphere.

Salary and benefits are great but expect slow responding people and depending on department, you can feel disorganized when asking for additional resources to complete your work.
