Long term shop employee.

Pay is good, learned a lot of skills over the years and became quite versatile. Owner is pleasant to work for, foremen are helpful. However...............

Shop level management is sub par and unknowledgeable of actual processes or procedures in many area's, nepotism and favortism runs rampant, nearly zero opportunity for advancement, negative shop culture,  under cutting on safety and health (air mover in a welding shop not being functional for over a year due to poor planning and delegation),  cluttered shops, dirty, mechanical issues put off on machines, preventative maintanence schedules nearly non existent, retention of TFW's while laying off long term employees, disorganization and a culture of intimidation.

The shop will pay the bills and pay them quite well, however, dreading going to work for very little real reward and hard work going unrecognized without becoming hockey buddies with direct shop management make shop employment within this company not so beneficial.

Positive for learning many different skills in a short period of time, not worth sticking out for the long haul. Better options are readily available.

I really enjoyed working for Edmonton Exchanger.  I found the management, skilled and their planning top notch!  

My fellow employee's were knowledgeable and willing to help a person out if needed.  They were courteous and dependable.

My typical day started with the morning tool box talk, followed by a short wait for the permit.  Then go to site, look for the dangers involved with the task, tools & materials needed; fill out the FLRA, gather tools and materials and begin working.  We would interact with Shell Operators and our tasks would be completed in a timely manner.  The shut down went smoothly as expected in a shut down.

I got my first real experience working under air!  Loved it!!!

Left a great job due to possible retirement and was offered position here, I jumped at the chance to work for a larger established company thinking stability and room for advancement, learn many new skills. I was bounced around so much, they had no position available, and basically hired me to fill in for their vacations. Once one of the employees was back I was let go after a follow up the week before which went well. I felt like a black sheep there the whole time, no one really conversed with me and seemed silent while I was around it was a very uncomfortable environment. 

Working there was great since the people were really friendly and made you feel like family.
My typical work-day consisted of managing recent purchases and their invoices, managing software licenses, installing and updating various softwares or even completely configuring computers and also checking and configuring printers. I was in charge of of managing all the technical assets and their whereabouts (desktop-PCs, laptops, printers, scanners, software licenses, etc.)

Working a shutdown a typical day included toolbox talks, safety meetings, lots of walking (which I loved) and lots many engaging conversations with the crews. The culture was amazing, everyone got along great, and safety culture was through the roof, having everyone on board. hardest part of the job was the long hours, the best part was the people I had the privilege of working with. 
Great overall experience

Replaced with foreign temp workers in the shop after ten years.  As were many long term Canadian workers.  Owners don't have a clue what goes on during each shift.  Whitehats protect their lazy friends and layoff the guys who actually work.  The owner should wake up and relize he's being lied to by his shop whitehats and getting rid of quality workers for friends and foreigners.

What is the best part of working at the company?
It’s in the city so no travel is needed. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Dealing with supervision and management. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Clicky, very top down ruled and not any modern ways of thinking or dealing with staff.

Employees, as well as supervisors were very friendly, and made everyone felt important
Incidental information were always shared between shifts, which in turn kept us abreast with our surroundings.

Work hours are flexible and they really care about their employees. Scheduled breaks (due to union workers) and lovely people to work with. This company is constantly looking to give back to the community and employees.

I enjoyed the work there, it was long hours, but good co workers, and great bosses.  LOA pay was provided, and I have temporary accommodations in Fort McMurray.  The work is contract work, so upon completion of the shut down, I come back East to my residence.
