The company is stuck in the dark ages of print and needs to re-focus itself towards digital. Working with older sales reps who have a difficult time chasing new business and promoting digital makes it hard to move forward. Sales reps not only don't like promoting digital, they will choose to promote print instead, which doesn't help the company's advancement. The sales floor needs to hire a lot of young new people to get things rolling. A lot of blame for lack of sales gets put on the support system (media strategists) who are there to go on calls and help sell digital - not cold call and hunt down new business.
Lack of communication over-all from management. Very little direction or performance feedback.
There is no job culture, it runs like a company out of the 80s, punch in & out, no social interaction aspect outside or around work. 
Over-all this company needs a re-vamp!

There have been many rounds of layoffs, and generally everyone walks around as if they have an axe over their head.
Things may improve with a new announcement of government funding support for local news outlets; however, they have lost so much, it's doubtful they can really recover.
In the meantime, there are changes every day; in spite of once having a robust system of supports for getting the news out daily, nowadays you never know if the person you used to be able to rely on for, say the page outline, is even still employed.
Everyone else has to adjust, and adjust quickly. It's a huge amount of stress added to an already deadline-stressed workplace.

A typical day consists of managing trucks and dealing with paper work, and working on machines. I have learned how to handle stressful situations. My management were always pleasant they had an open door policy which is really comforting. My co workers were friendly and I really enjoyed working with my co workers. The hardest part of my job was the night shift hours its hard on the body. What I enjoyed most was the fast paced environment.

Everyday was a treat to go into work. By-in-large, we had a fantastic group there. The hardest part of the job was watching the business shrink, then eventually go away. The entire production department was outsourced to the facility where the St. Albert Gazzette is printed. Not one person, to my knowledge, was given an offer.

For the most part, my work experience at the Edmonton Journal, as both sports editor and sports columnist, was rewarding and fraught with excellent opportunities to take on major assignments, including world travel.

Answered phones, advised customer's ad wording, input data into community paper, volunteered at various events.
Learned specific computer systems for ads and editorial content.
Worked with very creative and professional people,

Excellent place to work before they closed the plant in 2012 and moved to St. Albert. I learned different jobs to do and how it all worked to together to get the paper produced for the nightly run. Always met new people coming in to the plant to replace those that moved on.

Working as a news photographer is a very time sensitive pursuit.  You must be able to produce high quality, accurate, relevant and thought provoking images in a quick, orderly fashion in order to meet often tight production deadlines.

The newsroom has always had an incredible mixture of intensity, creativity, camaraderie and comedy.
The Journal continues to be packed with passionate and professional journalists and I know they will continue to do an awesome job.
