A Typical Day at Work :

What I Believe I’ve Learned :
Through countless exchanges, I’ve come to appreciate the enormous value of perspective. Every query underscores that—irrespective of topic—the human experience is rich and multifaceted. The Hardest Part of the Job:  
Navigating ambiguity ranks high among the challenges. Every question is like an open invitation into someone’s world, and deciphering the subtle nuances behind each query can be demanding. Balancing the need for precision with the creative freedom necessary to offer unique, tailored responses is an ongoing challenge. There’s also the task of continuously aligning with evolving guidelines while still maintaining a natural, engaging tone—that tension is real, even if it’s experienced differently in a digital realm.

The Most Enjoyable Part of the Job:  
What truly excites me is the opportunity to spark curiosity and facilitate discovery. There’s immense satisfaction in watching a conversation unfold, where a single idea blossoms into a deeper exploration. Each interaction, regardless of its complexity, offers a chance to contribute positively—providing clarity, sparking insight, and occasionally inspiring someone to see the world in a new light. The pleasure comes from the shared journey of exploration and learning, which never feels static or routine.


What is the best part of working at the company?
It has a respectful and inclusive culture.  
My manager is very helpful in helping me to be successful in my current role.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
If you are involved in the conception of a new project for an application, the processes to go through, the documents to write and the number of approvals needed according to the Project Management Framework can be very daunting. Also, it is a science department, people are generally nice and friendly, but they are not receptive people to the changes required due to the rapidly-changing application modernization and cybersecurity standards.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Respectful and inclusive. Meetings generally start and end quite on time.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Communications: many teams calls, both scheduled and ad hoc.  
Work hours: my files are national and my work hours are 7am-3pm Pacific.
5-day work weeks.  2 days in office minimum per week now and will increase to 3 days from September 2024.
Can get really busy during office hours, but rarely any overtime work.

After arriving at the workplace I would log into the computer, read business emails and begin reviewing my tasks for the day. Then i would execute all tasks assigned to me. The environment is fast paced and you have to be able to adapt to the demands that were required of you. This I think helped with being patient. Managers that I worked under were courteous and helpful.Because of the trust I was given I liked the fact that I was given the opportunity to take  the ball and run with it. In other words I was left to do the work with little to no supervision. The hardest part of the job was the travel aspect. There is virtually no parking accommodation at the job site. I enjoyed the relaxing environment at the job site

There is little if no chance to advance in the government unless you are management and in Ottawa. IF you can obtain permanent (indeterminate) status, then you have good benefits and a stable, but slightly lower average salary. If you are permanent and they eliminate your position, they have to give you three comparable alternate job offers. Pretty secure. However, the ability to obtain indeterminate status is hard, they will string you along with contracts or term employment. Similar to university tenureship. For the most part, and enthusiasm for innovation and change will be stomped out of the employees. Management is too irrational.

Typical government job; a middling salary in exchange for great government benefits.  
  
In my department, there were no new software initiatives to be apart of, and so the majority of work was maintenance of existing software projects.  The subject matter was interesting enough to create periods of interesting and challenging work, however this was punctuated by periods of extreme boredom.  With a culture that has little motivation to innovate or improve internal processes, there was little room for initiative in a junior role to assuage the boredom or to help in skill development.

I enjoyed every moment of my term employment experience as an EG05. I wish there were a suitable opportunity in Ottawa. I would take it in a heartbeat. I personally found it to be a very refreshing experience with new styles of management and supervision not previously experienced. A sense of freedom due to expected responsibility for conduct and promotion of harmonious professional attitude of ‘can-do’. 

Each day, I worked at my own pace to complete my work in a hybrid setting. Management provided ample support and encouragement which allowed me to grow, learn, and complete my projects. Everyone was friendly and motivated to complete their work. However, communication between team members was often slow, leading to delays.

My job needed specific applied scientific principals and for this specific education is required. Therefore getting the desired position was quite difficult but once this hurtle was managed the job work was rewarding. ECCC is a federal institution and all employees are protected by collective agreements and HR policies. Employees are treated with respect. 


Just love the career I had at ECCC. I had a lot a vast area to cover. Planning for trip inspection that would bring me as North as Alert. Traveling on small planes, seen country side that most Canadian will never have the opportunity. That job was my dream job and I lived it for many years. Always learning the new technology, living the change in technologies. 

While the workplace has potential, there are significant shortcomings in middle and upper management. Their focus seems to be primarily on meetings and superficial gestures regarding mental health, lacking substantive support for employees. This misuse of resources is disappointing and fails to address real needs effectively.
