I am a new employee and I am really impressed with the welcome I have received. Coming from another agency here in Ottawa I was very surprised at the level of training and support that is provided to staff. In my previous jobs I had no support in managing issues while at work, I really felt on my own and really unsafe. At EYC there is a number of people I can call if I need guidance or support. The supervisors here have been very welcoming and very helpful while I learn the policies. I made a mistake and I was met with by their trainer but even though I was embarrassed I was offered more training and ultimately I know better now not to make the same mistake twice. 
If you are working at another agency in Ottawa and are wondering about differences at EYC like I did, here are thew things I would have wanted to know:
1. There is a MAX of 4 kids in each house. This is huge as I have not seen this anywhere else I worked!
2. There are 3 staff on every night sometimes 4 staff if its needed. Again this is huge I have never seen this level of staffing at other places I worked. 
3. The pay is monthly - I was not happy when I learned this but Im glad I didn't let this deter me from coming here. My pay is always received on time.
4. There is a BCBA and client care team in the agency that oversees programs for the kids. Yes this is at other agency's but at my previous job those people were not involved at all, not reading reports, not giving feedback ect. The team at EYC is engaged in the programs FULLY.  
5. If you raise a concern it WILL be addressed and fast. I reached out with a concern and it was handled right away I did not feel bad for reaching out and I knew it would be handled with care. 

Ultimately Im very happy - I work with some staff who are amazing and some staff who are somewhat negative but I really believe its because they don't understand this field and EYC is doing their absolute best to meet the needs of the kids and the staff as a whole. 


I have recently made the very difficult decision to move on from my position at Evolving Youth. I was with this company for a few years. When I started I was in my first year of University. Because of this I was offered a longer training period due to the managers assessment of my understanding in my final meeting which takes place at the end of my orientation shifts. 

I’m leaving Evolving Youth with a greater understanding of the community needs where children and youth are considered. I understand our legislation better now and I truly commend this agency for sticking by their youth in times that are challenging. What I found most challenging was when we would lose members of our staff due to their own fears in working with high risk youth. This comes with the job but I did find this very difficult because working with newer staff can really weigh on a team and it’s hard to hire staff as quickly as sometimes we can lose staff due to the shear reality of this field. 

In the few years I was here I saw many things change for the good, the company continues to push the agency forward for the better and I believe they will continue on that path. 

I have moved on due to my own personal goals and career path however the agency encouraged me to follow my own path and provided references to support my journey. 

I will look back on my time at EYC fondly, I hope to cross paths and work together again in the future. 

Myself and a colleague have recently joined EYC. We can both agree that the youth placed within the agency are very challenging to support however to say that EYC is unable to support these youth would not be true. Coming from another agency int he field I will say that EYC advocates for the needs of the kids and I have been presented with staff who feel strongly that this is a money grab but coming from another agency I really dont agree. The money spent on the kids at evolving to make sure they have everything they need and more is a clear indication that the company is child focused. I was asked to switch houses one shift and thats not my favourite but I understand we need to support where its needed. I was called by a manager to learn about the kids and protocols of the kids in that house so I felt prepared. I felt like this was better than just being handed a paper about a kid like I was at a previous company. I was also offered 20 dollars for gas to get to the other house because it was outside of what I was expecting to do or how far i thought i would drive for that day in my car. I feel well supported and if I wasnt happy I do feel like I can go to a supervisor and I will be assisted.

My positives:
1) Despite those who state there is no support I have been supported very well when calling our oncall support. Oncall has come to the residence to support in person when needed and sometimes I just had questions and they helped over the phone. There is one person oncall each evening.
2) Pay is good
3) There is a company vehicle which my last company didn't have one so although we have to use our own vehicle sometimes, there is a company vehicle at each house. 
4) I asked for more training and that was organized right away.
5) Management is very welcoming, I have never felt mistreated. I know Im appreciated. 
6) This company is staffed very well. Every youth basically has their own staff to support them. 

Negative: 
1) When staff move on they say they will give two weeks notice then they just come up with excuse after excuse. It takes a few weeks to properly train a replacement so Im frustrated with staff who bail on the kids and their team without allowing time to get situated. 
2) This field isn't for everyone so there will always be turnover regardless of where you work in this field. Turnover does not mean it isn't a great agency. This field has high turnover because you either thrive in the environment or find out very quickly it's not your cup of tea. 

I love my job. If you want to help kids that others close their doors on then you have found the right company to work with. 


Intimidating for first few weeks then it got easier. Building relationships with youth who don’t know you and have good reason not to trust you is hard. The youth have had a hard past so they have every reason not to trust the adults in their lives. It will come just don’t give up because these kids are used to people giving up on them. 
-The pay is good. They will pay you based on your experience, how much direction you need, your ability to run a shift and how long you have been there as well as your position.
-Management is approachable. Open to discussion if you are struggling to grasp the job or need extra training. Management is about accountability so you will get in trouble if you don’t follow policy so I advise you to just follow the policy and if you make a mistake be honest and management will work through it with you. 
-the staff are good. I Like most of my team but there’s the odd staff who you can tell just shouldn’t be working as a child and youth worker. The staff you just wait to quit or get fired. But you will get that anywhere even McDonald’s. 
-overall I can’t complain. My last few shifts I spent out with my assigned youth all day having a blast. Went to an arcade, horse back riding, beach… how can I complain. 



This agency is poorly run in every aspect of the word. Management does not respect availability and expects extensive overtime without appropriate pay. They are not responsive to concerns of employees. 

They do not ensure a safe workplace for residential staff. Management is extremely unprofessional, including fluctuating/unfair wages. They are also ignorant towards the workplace conditions and have unrealistic expectations. 

The agency provides a couple (barely usable) vehicles, which means no compensation for usage of your own vehicle other than .24 cents per KM (which includes a lot of wear and tear/damage from clients, and excessive mileage).

Residential staff endure excessive amounts of physical trauma and are forced to work extreme hours (at minimum wage) and are physically and mentally exhausted. Staff attempt to find resources and therapy for the youth, and have multiple suggestions towards behavioural support plans that often get shut down by management. 

Overall I am thankful for the experience and the connections with the youth.

At this company you will be responsible for the kids living in the homes. You have to complete training before starting to work and then you can work at one house and pickup shifts at other houses too. The hours can be long if something goes wrong or one of the kids has to go to the hospital then your shift runs long but that’s to be expected. You can take the next day off work if that happens so you aren’t too tired. 

I am happy here so far and if I ever leave would probably be because I’m moving up in my career.

I like most of the supervisors, one of them I’m not a fan of because she seems rude but the rest are really supportive. 

Management is great, I have had one problem where I had to get a write up for a mistake I made and the manager was polite to me but firm and explained why I have to be more careful next time. I can’t say I have a problem with the managers. I was told I could be suspended if I made the same mistake again that felt a bit harsh but it’s the policy so I understand. I don’t hate managers for doing their job….. 

Honestly, I used this company as a stepping stone because I heard it prepares you for pretty much any job. I worked at the male group home for about two years. The kids had addiction and aggression issues but they were good kids just trying to make it in life. Management was good and they wrote me letters of reference and even helped me with my applications for the RCMP.  Ive probably used them for references 6 or 7 times and each times Ive advanced in my career path. I have since been hired on full time with the RCMP and I dont think I would have been prepared without my group home experience. I also worked for another agency before this and  there was really no comparison. Terrace Youth cares for these kids and they do what they can to help them be successful.  Initially when I started the hours were a bit crazy, but management implemented a rotational schedule and it balanced out, I never was scheduled for more than 3 days straight. People call in sick so sometimes you get calls requesting to work but I always just said no and It was fine.

I have been with this company for over a year now. Although the work can be difficult based on each clients needs it is also rewarding seeing your clients grow over time. My favourite part of this job is the teams that you work with. All of the teams I have been apart of are supportive and friendly. For me that is what makes this job enjoyable, the people you're working with. Even on the hardest days these coworkers can have me smiling!! Another thing I like about this company is the growth opportunities. I have had the privilege of being offered multiple promotions within my year working with this company. On top of that I have been offered opportunities for additional training which has helped me grow in my role even more. I don't want to lie and say that this job is easy because it can be really hard somedays, but it is also great experience in the field and it comes with so many learning opportunities. Group care is honestly never a job I saw myself in but now I am so happy that I have this experience and knowledge.
