The owners at Expedia Cruises Belleville are constantly recruiting for new consultants.  The reason is they have a high turnover.  I believe the reason is they do not live up to the rosy picture they present to new recruits.  We are told that we can set our own hours, work as much or as little as we want, work from home if we wish, enjoy perks like agent rates, fam trips, and accessible training programs.  The training is good, but the rest, not so much.  They are EXTREMELY controlling.  They now require consultants to maintain a certain tier level of sales in order to enjoy Fams or Agent rates, even though it costs them nothing, and new consultants can probably benefit the most from those learning opportunities!  They expect to be asked permission before a consultant takes advantage of an agent rate or fam, again, even though it costs them NOTHING, and is one of the few perks of being a travel consultant, as the money is limited.  Favourtism is rampant-so if you are fortunate enough to have high end clients and toe the line with the owners you will get the majority of good leads that come in, while others get none.  You will also be pressured to put in office time, even if you've made it clear that you want to work from home.

I signed up for this because I was told that I could do it from home.   I paid $350.00 plus $25.00 a month.   I had just retired medically and I was told at the time that I could do it from home with no problems.    The $25,00 was for home base.    The in office amount to be paid was 11.00 a month.  I was told that how and if I earned a commission would be up to me.   I was never told that if I did not make any sales that I would lose my access to the system.    I started having problems with my health and personal so I was not able to book any cruise or anything for awhile.  When I finally got better, I went on the system to start looking at the bookings and to start back into it.   The very next day, I tried to go back on line and I was blocked.  Mid Month ( after I paid for the entire month) I was sent a email on my personal account and was told that I no longer worked for Expedia and it was a corporate decision because I was wasteing their time ,  IF I HAD BEEN TOLD THAT I HAD TO SALE OR BE CANCELED I WOULD HAVE NEVER SPENT THE MONEY.    The funny thing about it is this owner told and still have people that only got into for their own traveling and was not interested in a full time.   I FEEL CHEATED, LIED TO.

This job allows for yo to make yuor own hours. You can wor as much or as little as you want and you can take on as many clients as you feel comfortable with. Expedia is very good at keeping you up to date with all of their suppliers and wholesellers products and great valued vacation packages.
Suppliers will come in evey two weeks to give fun presentations on their new products and promotions for your customers, and expedia will offer agent insentives to selling each fiscal year based on sales. Agents also receive special agent rates for travel.
The Travel Industry Act of Ontario also helps to provide acts and regulations to ensure that all business is run accordingly and they are always willing to help with any issues involving wholsellers and registrants. This also protects your clients so that they are more willing to purchase from agents and Canadian products that are protected by the Ontario Compensation Fund.

Some clients can be a lot of work when the compensation may be low.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Excellent. It is a fun place to work and great learning environment. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Research and book travel with various suppliers. Call current and past clients to let them know about deals and promotions, as well as let them know about consumer events with various travel suppliers.

I started with Expedia Cruiseshipcenters because it allowed me the opportunity to enter the travel industry on a part-time basis, with no travel industry experience required. The training is all done online, independently. franchise managers may be new to the industry which does not provide new travel Consultants with strong support. Once I became a full-time consultant although I was the second best sales person in the office the commission structure and rate of pay can be frustrating at times especially if you're coming from an industry where you received a paycheck every 2 weeks. found myself working at all hours day and night. Sometimes hard to find work home balance

Management never listened and constantly argued when being presented with information. Management was constantly rude and made you work weekend events but would not pay you to work those events. Weekend events were made to be non optional and happen frequently 

Management stuck in their ways and not open to any form of change. 

No pay raises. No possibility of advancing. 

A full day of work could be completed in 2-3 hours. Very boring job with very little work. Unorganized office that always says it will be paperless but never made an effort to become that. 

Exciting and challenging work with very good pay and tremendous benefits. Management is highly impersonal and only about the numbers and not employee growth...unless you’re “in” the “in-group” then you’re royalty. People not in with the clique are ostracized, ignored and treated as outsiders. 

Great organization for those passionate about travel and wanting to assist clients in finding their ideal travel destination. Good work environment with excellent support and tools. However, consultants work on commission and the amount of compensation would not support someone needing to raise a family or pay a mortgage. Great for a retiree or someone looking to supplement their income with a "side gig."

-Calling former clients to invite them to Cruiseship presentations.
-Arranging air, accommodation, cruise and travel detail for clients
-Follow clients to ensure holiday experience is what they expected.
-The most difficult part was competing with internet offers where there was no service.
-Difficulties with airlines canceling flights or delays due to weather in order to reach cruise ship ports.

I love being a travel professional .I thoroughly enjoy researching and learning new things on a daily basis. I enjoy booking vacations for clients. Everyday and every person is different. I find this job does have its challenges. Sometimes it can be frustrating when you cant find exactly what your looking for or something goes wrong with a booking etc. It can definitely be challenging at times. Overall, I love my job and will always continue moving forward in the travel business.
