(1) I look at my day calendar, check e-mails, to set goals to achieve for the day and whether I need to update my manager, and which colleagues to interact with. A good part of my work is to do qualitative and/ or quantitative analysis of information, and write reports on the basis of that (2) I have learned (in addition to socioeconomic analytical skills) new skills in the evaluation of publicly funded programs, gathering information by using multiple lines of evidence. (3)  I have also learned to look at the project management aspects of the files/ projects that I am working on. (4) My colleagues include: senior evaluation officers, and evaluation manager. I also organize Working Groups for different evaluation projects I am working on, and therefore have a good working relationship with managers, directors, and directors general from several directorates (and sometimes, when working on 'horizontal files', I work with colleagues across several Government Departments). (5) The hardest part of the job is: ensuring good quality data, extracted to my satisfaction, by the data-development branch; and working to ensure privacy concerns are all met according to the government regulations. (6) The most enjoyable part of the job is: when my reports get approval from the Senior Management, and when a report is actually published online and made accessible to the Canadian public.

I worked during the 2021 federal election, during the actual day of the election. the pay is obviously not as reliable as a more stable job, given the day(s) of your employment, HOWEVER it pays well enough for the work. it’s also a great way to sharpen your “employability” skills if you can stomach the long hours.

my pre-work training was very thorough, and covered a lot of scenarios that would be expected over the course of my duties. take lots of notes during the session. furthermore, you’ll want to really know your training materials from the first page to the last, and don’t hesitate to ask questions/help (especially on the day(s) you’re working!).

the main drawback to this job is the long hours. I’m not sure what it’s like during early polling days, but on the day of the election I worked early in the morning and stayed until late at night for cleanup. because your opening/closing tasks have their own procedures, they may seem gruelling, but thankfully it’s not too daunting.

my co-workers were mostly great to work with, which especially helped as we were working together for a while. I say mostly because one employee I worked with (don’t know if they were a co-worker or higher-up) noticed how disorganized my desk was. which is on me, of course, but I vaguely remember them dumping my stuff somewhere (on the floor?). that wasn’t pleasant, in retrospect. while I didn’t think much of it at the time, I definitely should’ve reported that to someone. don’t be like younger me who wasn’t very assertive, folks.

Really hard to balance a life outside of work even though they hire part time but your constantly having to do something for the job and they will call and text you at any given moment throughout the day. You do EVERYTHING from inserting your own pay to delivering packages. You knock on doors and deal with very angry people who say and do very inappropriate things. Management is all over the place, one minute they want you to do this the next they want something different. You can easily get blamed for a lot and there isn’t very much room for mistakes. I’ve seen people get fired for making a mistake. Which is crazy because that’s how people learn. You don’t really get trained on the job. Just given a book to read and then when your out there you just have to figure it out for yourself. The pay is good if your getting the hours. Your paid by the hour and there isn’t any other incentive. Some days you may only work one hour because your given 10 houses and some people refuse to answer the door. But they want you to clock in 20 hours which is hard if your only getting 1-3 hour days actually knocking on doors. Rules were changed for phone calls which is where u can add more hours. It sounds crazy because if you enter in a decent amount of work they’re questioning you even though it takes time to fill out questionnaires and do everything else they’re calling you for. Don’t get paid enough to use printer paper, ink, pens, etc. Which your using a lot. Anywhere from 5-10 sheets of paper a day. Only reason I stayed was because It’s a temp/seasonal job and it’s litterally only for a 3 months. 

Do not EVER work for the EI call centre. Way too toxic of an environment. Your work is constantly being assessed and it’s never in a positive way. The “experts” are overly critical of your work (if you add an extra space between wording or don’t add a period at the end of a sentence then you get marked “wrong”. You are expected to be a human computer. The 10-12 weeks of training they put you  through has very little in doing the actual job. Worst job I have ever had and I had many many days where I felt completely stupid and not confident at all. There were quite a few occasions where I was so frustrated and stressed at the end of my day that I cried. I had a headache every day and felt nauseous. It got to the point where I dreaded going to work. Above all of this there is a series of tests that you are required to pass but even if you do it’s still not good enough. This is such an awful place to work that they have classes that start every month for new hires. Zero retention here. My class had over 20 people to start and only 4 are still working there. So if you want a job that reduces your confidence to zero then go ahead and work here. 

Training is decent, not enough time to absorb information. Micromanaged 24/7, PTM training is a joke, management unorganized and will throw you on the spot if you don't participate. People are scared to participate because of sarcastic tones by trainers when an agent gets something wrong. Turn over rate is high. Not worth your mental sanity to take home a measly pay cheque after tons of deductions. My old bank job basic benefits was way better than what I got from the Government in this role. Parking is not free. Get ready to lose sleep, no longer enjoy your weekend due to stress for the up coming week. Everyday is just new and more information. You will be lucky to review the same training information for 2 days. There are quizzes throughout your training. You have to get a certain passing grade to move on with the role. If you don't succeed there is a good chance they will let you go for not being the right fit for the role. Be very sure to have a plan when getting into this job. Best of luck to anyone applying. 

Overall, my experience working for the Government of Canada was positive. The organization provided a professional and structured working environment with clear expectations and goals. The management was supportive and provided opportunities for growth and development.

The job itself was challenging and required attention to detail, but it provided me with a sense of accomplishment when I was able to help make a difference in the lives of Canadians. The team I worked with was collaborative and diverse, which made for a great working atmosphere.

One of the best things about working for the Government of Canada is the benefits and perks that come with being a public servant. This includes a comprehensive benefits package, flexible working hours, and opportunities for professional development.

The only downside was that the bureaucracy in some areas made it difficult to get things done quickly, but it was manageable.

In conclusion, I would recommend working for the Government of Canada to anyone looking for a stable and rewarding career with a focus on serving the public.

In order to obtain all the information you need to do your job your day needs to be well planned. Some co-workers tried to take advantage of those who had more knowledge rather than learn for themselves. I acted several times in management positions. I feel if you are treated with respect by management you also get respect. The hardest part of the job was trying to implement new procedures sent down from Ottawa by people who had never worked or visited the site and these procedures were impossible to follow to the letter. The most enjoyable part of the job was having the opportunity to act at different levels of the job as well as having the chance to be seconded to several different locations because you have a much better understanding of how everything comes together and why some things are done the way they are.

Left best earnings job for PSO, 12 weeks of training in class with constant fear of losing employment. No one will tell you about 6 tests to pass, each test 3 to 4 hours long. After passing basic information of 12 weeks training now you're on floor with coach. Coaches will play with your confidence and constant reminder of you are not capable under the umbrella of we will support you to become successful. After 10 days of coaching poor management will serve you action plan because now you're not capable of working. What taught in class is just basic information about the job, what is on floor is completely different. If you get simple calls that will also concerned the management. 

Please beware of taking this position or move out from your place to another. Poor management.

Job is not hard but the way management treats you and play with your self confidence. It will drain your energy and you will start having 2nd guess of yourself.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Working as a consultant on a specific project allows one to focus specific skills on a defined task, complete said task within a broad timescale, and set achievable, self-imposed metrics.  Government service allows one to build experience and expertise quickly within a short period, building your CV and future marketability.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Working with managers and staff who lack motivation to succeed and deliver projects on time.  Being too focussed on delivery CAN alienate one from team members who are not as focussed.  A challenge in itself

Status quo, do your job and nothing more.  Unmotivated.
