HOWE SOUND PULP AND PAPER

Like being in high school again with all the drama and  bureaucracy between the union and management and everyone trying to just cover their own butt while doing as little as they can. Equipment and machinery is poorly maintained and often don’t have what you need to do the job safe and properly. The entire place is a disaster of poor preparation and organization, and they love to preach on safety and route cause but nothing is practiced, the only reason for any sort of safety talks or procedures are to keep management from taking the fall when something does happen. The only real perk of the place is that it has good benefits and if you’re willing to give up your free time you can make good money and accumulate lots of paid time off. There is no real advancement or furthering your career here though because the pay between the bottom and top positions in each department are fairly close, and your real money is made in overtime. Higher positions do come with a lighter work load but you really need to take the mindset of working here for a pension rather then advancing you career.

The Sunshine Coast, although expensive, is a great place to live and raise a family. The mill is a short 20 minute commute from Gibsons.
Howe Sound is a modern, environmentally friendly pulp mill with a deep sea port. The people are top-notch and there is little turnover.

I didn't find anything stressful.  

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
 They have a safety oriented culture.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Working mostly alone, no pressure from supervision

Meetings, assignment, cleanup go home.
I did not personally learn anything from this job, I tried very hard to learn, but being a union job, only senior employees were given training opportunities.
Management was very combative
Co-workers were indifferent
Waking up to go to work
Going home.

They will tell you lies to get you in the door. The staff is clique and the pay isnt very good. The only upside is vacation time and days off. The location is beautiful but the town is very expensive to live in and extremely isolated. I would not recommend this job to anyone.

Over 120 Staff people fired in the time I was there. Several reassigned outside or beneath thier expertise. Very stressfull place to work. Location is great, most of the people were great to work with.

Will randomly lay you off for months with zero indication because they find product from the states and screw our home countries people. Union environment super toxic as unions can be.

Not a secure situation with more pending lay offs and an upcoming contract negotiation.  Hard to get things done with parts being cut back and extended wait periods for authorization

How sound is a very dangerous place to work. Often they make you work alone and you have to go into areas that are volatile. So many guessing has happened at this place. I was gas five or six times while working or maybe more. 

Enjoyed my work there and the people. Would go back if an oportunity was there. There was talk of closing the camp but as far as I know, its still running.
