Halcyon Hot Springs Resort


Working as a guest service agent has its ups and downs, but ultimately, my experience has been a mixed bag. Here’s a closer look at what a typical day looks like, what I’ve learned, and some insights into the management and culture.

A Typical Day: The schedule can be unpredictable, with shifts lasting anywhere from 8 hours to late at night, and they often change at the last minute with little to no notice. It’s not uncommon to work from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. without a break. While I’m dedicated to doing my best and helping guests, the lack of structure and breaks can be draining.

What I Learned: At first, I was eager to step up, work extra hours, and go above and beyond. However, I’ve learned that management’s approach can easily take away that motivation. Instead of support and encouragement, there’s a distinct lack of appreciation, which impacts morale.

Management: This is where the job really struggles. Management consistently refuses to help with guest issues, and instead, it feels like our efforts to resolve concerns are dismissed. If guests have complaints, management often acts as though these issues don’t exist or tells us to ignore them, which doesn’t align with providing great service.

Workplace Culture: I’m lucky to have friendly and supportive coworkers who understand the daily challenges. However, management tends to be critical and condescending, which damages the positive atmosphere the team tries to build.

The Hardest Part: Dealing with management is undoubtedly the hardest part. They rarely take responsibility for problems and are quick to blame staff for any issues, which makes for an incredibly frustrating environment.

The Most Enjoyable Part: Despite the challenges, the job’s location is a bright spot. The setting is beautiful and offers a pleasant environment to work in, which makes a difference, even on tough days.

Overall, working here has its rewards, mostly from the camaraderie with coworkers and the beautiful surroundings. But the lack of support from management can make it difficult to stay motivated and do our best for guests.

I have been working for this company for just over a year now and would like to share my positive experience.
There has been much change recently from the "old Halcyon" This company has a great focus on employee wellness and work/life balance. The resort is located in the remote wilderness of the West Kootenay and I truly love that. I have access to the outdoors daily and also many activities to keep a positive out-of-work lifestyle. Boating, Swimming, Mountain Biking, Hiking, Camping, Road Trips, and more. All are easily accessible from this remote location just South of Revelstoke.

The new team is focused on creating a wellness culture for both guests and employees alike. All staff have access to the Hot Springs when off shift as well as available staff accommodation either onsite or close by. I have heard that there were challenges in the past but I have been lucky to have missed that era of Halcyon.
Halcyon is a great place of business and a fantastic employer. I feel valued and supported as an employee here.

I Was employed at Halcyon Hot-Springs Resort and Spa for 6 months in 2014. 
The people I worked with were great and the entire staff seemed like a big family after a few weeks of being there.

Living on site was tough especially because the staff accommodation is extremely old and not well taken care of. there was lots of old issues and other sorts of problems with the "Chateau Atco" most of the employees stayed in. 
Wage and compensation is below average for a bc resort however should have been better due to the remoteness of the destination and the amount of money the resort made annually.

The resort itself is beautiful. Amazing accommodations, amazing view and relaxing atmosphere. 
I wouldn't work there again however some people may really enjoy it!

There is a power struggle at the top of the company and you will get a lot of mixed information. People leave for shady reasons. Directions is changed weekly. Promises broken. Tons of very questionable decisions. Health and Safery concerns not addressed causing health issues to kitchen staff.  It would be quite comical if there wasn't so much potential to do better. The HR department is a joke. Just part of the click that acts sketchy to staff bringing up concerns or issues to someone in the regime. There is a group of friends and family who work at the highest levels here that get away with everything and contribute nothing but confusion. Extreme nepotism is rampantly obvious and in plain sight. If you are not in with the cool people, you are treated as worthless. 

I am someone who enjoys my job to be more physical and working housekeeping at Halcyon is a great way to keep in shape. They are big on work life balance here and so even though I work hard I get to relax and play in this beautiful area. The management team is supportive of any goals you may have and want to see you succeed. If you are someone who has higher standards for yourself, but always feel like your hard work goes un-appreciated this is the place to be. 
Living and working in a remote environment can be challenging for some, but with friendly co-workers and the main amenities near by it is worth being here for. 

There is so much to see out here! If you are someone looking for adventures in the nature the opportunities are just endless around this resort...skiing,  biking,  hiking,  sledding,  snowshoeing,  camping, boating, fishing!  it's a never ending fun cycle between winter and summer activities!...staff is awesome and very friendly!...after all theese years working here I'm still happy to be part of this company!

This company is top heavy with salaried employees & understaffed where it counts.  There is zero employee representation with an accounting clerk for the HR department & the morale is consistent.... keep your head down & shut up.  
The location is remote bear country & there is no cell service,  do your own wilderness awareness training because there is no safety program at the resort.

Very chill even when it's very busy. We are well communicated so not many problems until prep runs out. We were like a well oiled machine everyone has their responsibilities. Working as a team has never been more enjoyable especially with my best friends no other workplace can replicate the level of acceptance to be yourself. Everyday is a learning experience and the quality of the food shows that.

I am a front desk agent at Halcyon. I thrive in a fast paced and busy work setting. If you have motivation and are looking for opportunity, it’s here. Here you can work hard and relax hard. The managers and owners are helpful, friendly and give constructive feedback/mentorship . They care about their staffs physical and mental well-being. This place is gorgeous and I’m so grateful to be working here. 

The best place I've ever worked - Miss it! Hardest part of job is the isolation at times - most enjoyable though is the location - management and co-workers are all very easy to get along with and for the most part are great people - Learned so much it's too hard to list
