Hamilton Golf and Country Club

I had tears in my eyes on my last day here after 3.5 summers. That is after several seasons of different coworkers and different management. If you are willing to be a good worker, put in the effort to have a positive attitude and treat your bosses and coworkers with respect, then you will really enjoy this place. You reap what you sow. Yes, you may work in hot or rainy weather, but you adjust and the camaraderie and laughter I experienced with coworkers as well as the satisfaction I got from completing my jobs made it worth it. Prepare to feel a satisfying tiredness at the end of the day from doing manual labor. COVID has changed some of the ways things are done, but what place hasn’t had to change? It may not pay as much as landscaping, but you have easily accessible washrooms, water fountains, come to the same site each day and have all the tools you could need at your fingertips. You won’t get sent home early even if all the jobs are done; they’ll make sure you get an 8-hr day. Finishing at 2pm means you still get a good portion of the day to do stuff. There is even a generous bursary available to students who work there for a couple summers and some free bbq lunches in July & August. As a girl I enjoyed having a job that kept me physically fit during the summer. My favourite season was working the Canadian Open, which is set to return again in a few years! Although most of my coworkers were male and of various ages, none of them ever made me feel uncomfortable and instead treated me with respect and included me. As a recent nursing grad, I chose to come back here each summer during school over higher paying jobs because I’d rather enjoy my work than get paid more and be miserable while at work. Did I mention how beautiful the course is? I am only leaving because I need to pursue my nursing career!

I have several mixed feelings about my job here. What I didn't like is that certain managers could be bullies.  They would make you work long hours 12+ hours, then make you feel guilty about wanting to leave.  Plus these managers would eat, but you'd get nothing even though you worked a longer day then them. Breaks are non existent, and if you do get one, you have to sit alone. There is also no tipping there. Where it really shines is a few of the staff. The banquet manager is amazing, she is super nice. You will love her. The lady who does my schedule always tries hard to accomodate. The head bartender is someone you should seek out. Probably the most intelligent and coolest person I met, you will learn and be entertained from him, lots of good life advice. All the servers and bartenders are friendly and fun to be honest.The kitchen saw a lot of changes and sometimes could be difficult. The club itself needs to iron out some stuff, especially the fake promises they make. Sometimes you'd be really busy, but ignored or in over your head. As I see it, a good spot to work for one summer, then get out to a real eatery and make tips.

The Hamilton Golf and Country Club is a nice location to work, but only for a short time. There is a good balance between work and personal life, and that means that if needed you can take time off is needed very easily. 

However, the wages are low, and there is little to no chance of either a raise nor advancing farther into better positions. The job security is terrible, as it is common to be replaced after taking a short time off, and upon return to work one needs to fight for shifts.

Hopefully with the recant change in management things will improve, but until then I would not recommend working here due to the extreme lack of job security.

The job was very straight forward.  You would collect the men's dress shoes when they entered the locker room, shine them and return them to their locker.  When done golfing you would hand wash their shoes, and shine when needed.  Other responsibilities including making sure the men's locker room and washrooms were well equipped in supplies (toothbrushes, towels, shaving cream, razors, etc), vacuum and mop area. shine and dust furniture.  Other responsibilities included setting up for events, polishing floors, sweeping main entrance.

Typical days at work would consist of early mornings. Rounds going out from 7:00am - whenever. Being a caddie I learned the golf course, how to read greens and be able to give out yardages along side other mandatory jobs of a caddie. Throughout the years working with Hamilton Golf and Country Club I was promoted and moved up in my section of employment. I am grateful for the privilege of being able to work at this club, to experience what goes on and be part of the huge staff that makes this golf course functional. The members are amazing, kind and respectful. I always look forward to going out and assisting the members throughout the round.

- A typical day at work consisted of serving many members drinks throughout the day as well as opening and closing cash procedures.
- I learned how to complete a task under pressure through serving members during rush hours.
- Management was productive and well organized.
- My co-workers were hard-working individuals who I got along with very well
- The hardest part of the job was replenishing items in the store during busy hours.
-The most enjoyable part of the job was meeting new people, whether it was a new co-worker or a member of the club.

Honestly, the club itself may not be a bad place to work. I can say with 100% certainty that with the management in place in the course and grounds department you do not want to work here. They are full of false promises and truly are just horrid people. They will make fun of you behind your back and if they’re having a bad day you can be sure you will too. This sadly used to be an unbelievable place to work and I would have recommended it to anyone and everyone but now no chance.  If you are looking for a summer job, you’ll have a better experience at another course. 

Set up the dinning room or grill room for the days function. Attend to members or guests needs. Serve food and drinks. Clear food and drinks. Clear the entire dinning room of the event that happened. Learned to work in a team environment as well as on my own. Developed strong communication skills while interacting with members and guests. The hardest part of the job was dealing with rude members or guests. The most enjoyable part of the job was seeing the joy on a person's face when their wedding or other event went smoothly and you helped do that.

For a person like me with no experience in the catering industry and getting a position as runner and then waitress.

I'm learning so much about Food and wine and spirit from the management. Within 4 weeks I became a waitress, learn about their Jonas system.


When it comes to salary and working just for the summer (I'm a student) you've got to prove yourself worth it.I got a raise within 6 weeks. 

Working week-end is a minus but it's part of the perks in the catering industry.

I worked at Hamilton Golf and Country Club on the grounds crew in the summer of 2023. They have strong management support, and a positive culture amongst staff. They are open to allowing new staff to learn a variety of roles/jobs which makes things new and exciting, and the hours are good if you're a morning person. 

Leadership is very nice, supportive, and encouraging to staff. 

I would work there again!
