Harveys Swiss Chalet

At the start of the job, everyone was friendly and I looked forward to working and there were enough hours for a part-timer. But after the training time, which was like 14hrs a week, the weekly hours kept going down. From 9hrs to only 3hrs a week. The schedule for when you had to come to work was only a week in advance, meaning you couldn't really plan your month or make plans long in advance. 
About the workplace culture, many people were really friendly, but the managers seemed to be hostile after a few days. They would talk bad in their native language right in front of other people. During my last weeks, which I only worked about 3-6hrs a week, the manager was really rude, and this was not just me but other employees too. 
About the job in itself, it is "fast-food" so definitely very fast paced. As most jobs you are expected to work fast and without any mistakes, and interact and smile with rude customers. It is a minimum wage job so you get what you get.

Swiss Chalet and Harvey's are run by the Recipe Corporation, and its a hot mess. The store was franchise-run for several years before Recipe took it over. I was told I would be given 6-10 weeks of training, but barely got 4 days. Corporate expected everything to turn around in a fortnight, when in reality, it took several months before looking a little bit better. The restaurant was a mess, and the staff were sour about being left high and dry with no real help. The work hours were brutal and the staff was constantly cranky and exhausted (and rightfully so). Corporate management was no help at all, and they punished the good workers and ignored the bad ones. And nobody had any job security at all. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Meeting lots of different people and working in a fast paced job .gaining big revenue to the company.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The hours you work or extra hour  u work  the manager do not pay the extra so  manager get the tumbs up  from  the owner but us we cannot say anything because if u asked them they won’t give u enough  shift the manager give more hour to student  than us permanent or citizen,

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Work environment if you want to be a supervisor you just need to do what the manager will asked  then there’s also narrowing money that never paid  it’s very toxic work environment .

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Clean do cash and grill then inventory then meeting to assign people for what they will be doin .

What is the best part of working at the company?
The employees can sometimes be nice and the staff discount is okay. But that's about the only good I can say about my time at the company 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
It's fast food so the stress is baseline more than most other jobs in this wage level, but the most stressful part was the dangerous work environment and incompetent management. Leaky roof right in the kitchen, staff frequently slipped. Littered with mice. Faulty or downright unsafe equipment. Plus management will straight up lie to your face, didn't usually follow availability or hourly minimums for full time employees. Probably the single worst run place I have ever seen

While working at Swiss Chalet & Harveys I witnessed a couple of things I feel should be noted.

1. Toxic work environment: If you can't handle being yelled at, called slurs and being asked to do multiple tasks at once this isn't the job for you.

2. Management is very unorganized multiple times I saw orders sent back because of careless mistakes that could have easily been prevented.

3. There is a hierarchy in the kitchen and if you are not a chef or a female waitress you get treated like a mule. 

4. Be prepared to stay after your shift is done.

 

Working for Swiss chalet was one of the most emotionally, mentally and physically draining jobs I’ve ever had. The management and higher ups in the company are unreliable and useless. It’s very obvious that you are just a number to the company, and even when very serious problems arose, management couldn’t have cared less. If you are looking for a job I seriously consider looking somewhere else, as this job will drain you and the expectations put upon you for the salary you receive is ridiculous. 

I enjoyed working at Swiss Chalet/Harveys. The managers were really nice, and very flexible in regards to scheduling. My co-workers were amazing and super fun to work with. It would get super busy during the holiday season & thanksgiving, but that’s obviously a given. With a team who knew what they were doing, it was pretty easy to keep up with everything without getting too overwhelmed or stressed out. 

Management does not accommodate to outside scheduling. Hires exclusively teenagers and the gets upset when their parents plan vacations and take their kids with them.  Hours are around 30/week for part time employees with part-time pay, and it takes ages to get a day off. The staff that isn’t main management is amazing and fun, and very supportive, but the manager is known to drive people off, including employees who had been there for a week to 2 years. Overall, I only stayed to support the friends i made there, not for management. 

Some managers were quite chill. The owner was very cool and didn’t have a problem with the workers. However, some managers were annoying, rude or inconsiderate at times. 

Hours were pretty good as a part time employee and most of the time they would give you the hours you want (sometimes would cut one shift or so if one week was slow but that’s about it). 

You could get 60% off on all your meals. During Christmas the owner allowed everybody 100% off on their meals because of the crazy sales which was nice of him. 

I worked there for only a few weeks but had to leave. 
I was on the harveys side and i only was able to work two days a week but they were only open for one of those days. 
While in training i had a swiss chalet employee yell at me for asking for directions and for following directions from my supervisor. 
They also give the tips to the swiss chalet side. 

One night we got about $50 in tips and a coworker told me where they go. 

I never saw any tips.
