This organization is a great organization for new graduates looking to enter the social/community services field in Toronto. You will learn to develop your case-management skills, knowledge on addiction & harm reduction techniques, strengthen your crisis intervention abilities and learn all about social barriers. When you are Relief it is nice having the flexibility to determine your own schedule (if you are not picky about where you would like to work), as well as FT positions, pay very competitively. The organization provides a lot of great training opportunities and do invest in their employees a lot. The only detriment, as with most organizations in this field, is the politics with management and the fact that there seems to be a divide between older and younger staff. As long as you go in to do your work though you will be fine.

Staying awake on the overnight shifts

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
I worked in a house where 85 people lived that were chronic drug users, mental health living independently. A subculture of our society.

also i worked at Savard's women's shelter.  This shelter supported women surviving addiction and mental health

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I have to prepare and serve meals. monitor clients that are using drugs and overdosing.  Prevent violence from continuing.

honestly, I think shelter work is for some people and not for others. But there's also a huge difference between my experiences in different locations and with different supervisors. Over a few months of trying things out (I'm relief so I can work whereever/whenever), I found a location and shift that I really love. The time flies by, I love the team, I love the clients, I love what I'm doing. I don't love every employee I've met, but that would be true anywhere. I think if you really have a passion for helping people and like an exciting work environment lol then you'll be ok here. 

Some of the sites are great to work at depending on the clients in particular site and supervisor/site manager in particular site. Case management teams varies from site to site too. Weekend can be a mess with hardly any experienced staff. While some supervisor are hands on other you might keep wondering if they showed up to work. In terms of csw most of are great while there are quite a few who would take undue advantage of being a unionized staff 

Love the place. There are lots of opportunities to grow within the company.  Supervisors are very connected to front line staff and very supportive. Full time staff is often helpful to new staff members. Management and supervisors are very supportive towards front line staff. 

There are issues with every company you are with. First issue is compensation, the pay needs improvement. We are working with individuals who have serious mental illness and substance abuse. We have to be able to de-escalate crisis situation at any minute, which could cause bodily harm to self and people around.

Homes First is a poisonous organization. Io n any given day you will be working with agency staff because they prefer to fire their own shelter staff

Use this organization as a stepping stone to securing valuable work experience only

It was for placement and I was able to learn life skills and how to help others in situations that they could not help. We placed people in homes and set them up with necessity that will successfully help them get through life.

Would assist in helping with the breakfast program, prepare and set up. also with the clean up. Would assist in ensuring all clients are prepared for the day depending on activities.

Homes First is a great place to work.Tasks are well outlined and the team is awesome.You get fulfiled when your work potential is well utilized and with a supportive team
