•	Review and revise all existing Job Safety Analysis’ for Predator Drillings entire operations as well as create additional JSA’s that may not have been previously available
•	Review and revise all existing Standard Operating Procedures with elected drilling supervisors providing assistance
•	Host pre-tower safety meetings and safety “stand-ups” providing information regarding any potential safety concerns relating to the operations
•	Observe and participate in safety meetings held by crews prior to operations and attest their performance
•	 Perform Loss Prevention Observations to grade the crews overall effectiveness when engaged in their respective roles and to confirm that the standard operating procedures are being followed or, if in need of revision, are promptly revised
•	Review all Hazard Identifications, Behaviour Based Observations & Near Misses daily, and enter the data into a “real time” statistics report that is used to follow trending pattern on site
•	Provide daily, weekly, and monthly inspection reports on various aspects of the entire work site
•	Provide information in a morning conference call regarding daily activities, trending patterns and primary objectives that the crews are focusing on relating to their specific tasks
•	Orientate new to site workers and ensure that not only is all their respective documentation up to date, but that they understand the code and conduct of each and every employee on site, as well as the expectations of the prime contractor and other contractors on site
•	Coordinate with other safety advisors within the project and provided a weekly statistics report for both the Contractor and Prime Contractor of the project.
•	Develop an Emergency Response Plan as well as a Human Construction Traffic Interface Plan for each site and provide access to these plans to all workers present on site
•	 Upon incident, organize an investigation as to the nature of the incident and provide an incident report that is to be generated by a team of on-site supervisors
•	Assist  and mentor crews in performing man-down drills, hazard hunts and other safety conscious exercises to help encourage crewmembers active participation in these activities
•	Review all active and existing permits and inspections on site and ensure they are completed properly and in a timely manner
•	Select and award an individual, weekly, that was on site and demonstrated a commitment to safety, not only to himself but to his fellow workers
•	Act as a private confidante for any and all crewmembers that felt the need to share certain aspects of their lives that may attribute to their performance and ultimately, the safety of themselves and others
•	Provide recommendations at the end of the project season on ways to improve the overall safety and performance of the workers on site as well as third party

The organization ain't perfect but it is pretty darn good.  

They a a little overboard with the documentation process but that's the world we live in these days.

I did get to learn more and experience more opportunities than most did, as I was willing to move geographically as well as take on different responsibilities.  This helped build a great resume' for myself.

Employee development and training varies due to the fact that any person that delivers training to a newbie will have their own level of quality job done.  But still they do a better than average job at this as most everything has a procedure and training documentation is comprehensive and detailed.  This is really important stuff.

Safety is good. The one thing that causes variation in that is each employee and how well the foreman or plant superintendent has a handle on how to deliver it and to support it.  That's the case anywhere in the world you go.  They are setup well to compel a safety mindset.

Quality of work life is good and for long stretches, has been fabulous.

Annual bonuses are belittling and badly administered.  I expect the administration of a rewards system is always subject to politics and the abilities of the person managing it.  That's a universal theme throughout the corporate world.

These are just minor picks.  Considering all the others out there making Oil & Gas,___ they do a pretty good job.  Better than most.

I worked at the Ottawa tank farm as a full time terminal operator, contracted employee for six years. As a contracted employee I worked at Imperial Oil Monday to Friday. I wore the Imperial Oil uniform but was paid by the contracting firm that hired me. After the six years, I transferred to Black & McDonald and continued working at Imperial Oil part time as a service technician/ terminal operator/ safety supervisor. 
The average day starts at 7:30 and usually involves sampling/ testing petroleum products, as well as, preforming daily, weekly, monthly inspections and maintenance on pumps, valves, meters, gauges, etc.  year round. End of day is 3:30 pm.
The workplace culture is all about safety. Every job had a description and a list of steps to be safely completed. Since every job is double checked there is no incentive for rushing /skipping steps. If a job meant working overtime, the only question was the importance of that job getting completed. If it had to get done, Imperial Oil paid overtime without question. If the job could be delayed to the next day, it was.
The hardest part of the job at Imperial Oil is being on call all the time. Even if you're not on call, you are. If the call center can't reach the person on-call, they call you.
The most enjoyable part of the job is training. First Aid, WHIMIS, Transportation of Dangerous goods, Gas Testing, Man lift operation, Working at heights, Forklift Operation, and so on.

Imperial Oil has been producing oil and petroleum products for nearly 140 years and is home to the widely recognizable and respected Esso and Mobil brands.  

Imperial's never-ending pursuit of flawless safety performance is one that is shared by all employees; a strong safety culture is omnipresent at Imperial, no matter the site.  

The company is extremely well-hedged in the upstream, downstream, and Chemicals businesses and so is positioned to operate sustainably and profitably in times of crude oil volatility.  This provides employees with job security and is a great comfort.  Opportunities for job variety and advancement are abundant.

The work environment is positive and supportive, but the workload can be hectic since the company operates with a fairly lean structure.  This can make it difficult at times to find a healthy work-life balance, but this is not a major concern for most and is easy to overcome.  

Imperial sites make fantastic neighbors in the communities in which they operate.  The company and their employees routinely donate the majority share of United Way's annual budget in these communities which helps to support dozens of social organizations and programs for the less fortunate.

Financial compensation, benefits, pension are top-notch and likely rivaled by few, if any, within Canada.

As documentation regarding a company's major projects enters the outgoing phase, a job duty that the document controller must perform is to manage all documents during this phase. This involves checking the documents to make sure all information regarding the project is up-to-date and factual. As incoming project documents arrive, the document controller must also view these reports for validation purposes.The document controller keeps track of all company records by looking through both hard files and computer database files on a regular basis. In the process of keeping track of any changes occurring with these documents, the controller highlights any type of document modifications so that these changes can be viewed by upper management personnel.
Time management is the main key role which I learned from this job.Management look after their employees and creates a friendly environment to ease their people.Always there to help and guide in a difficult situations.
Co-workers are like your family and always stand behind you when you need them.Friendly atmosphere which enhance your productivity.
Long timing is the hardest part of this job but it overcome by co-workers and after 15 days you will get one day off which means long weekend.

At this company you will work 12 hour shifts, on a 5/4, 4/5 rotation.  You can expect to work night shifts once you are qualified to work in all units.  

A typical day at Imperial can get really busy as you have to write permits first thing in the morning, followed by a morning meeting to discuss the days work in each units, but it can also be followed by a few welcomed slack days.  

While at one of the plants, I've learned to work in all 3 units.  I was also blessed to be trained by this company in the art of working safely and to look after your fellow team mates.  

Co-workers were the greatest as most had plenty of experience to draw from.  Really fun environment with great co-workers.

The hardest part of the job is to be available at multiple work sites within your unit when a lot of things are happening at the same time.  Being safe becomes more so a priority and communicating with co-workers and contractors alike is very important.  Besides having to do your own work, dealing with other priorities can be stressful, making this I think the most difficult part of the job.

Getting together with co-workers and management on a scheduled event such as playing golf and other extra curricular activities is the greatest part I think.

Esso/On the Run, a subsidiary of Imperial Oil, is an exemplary place to work and comes highly recommended for all of the skills one can develop there. The average day consists of interactions with approximately 300 customers and forces one to think quickly on their feet and adapt their approach to a very diverse group of customers so as to speed up the process yet still leave customers feeling happy. 
   The management was exceptional, with the owner/manager ensuring he himself helped out during the weekdays and checked in on weekends. This helped to keep staff morale elevated. 
   The coworkers were a great group as well, mainly of South Asian descent but full of enthusiasm for working and a willingness to learn on the fly. 
   The hardest part of the job would arguably be the lack of breaks, with a lone attendant unable to close down the store to take a quick break. Fortunately, this was rectified by the attendant being allowed to take multiple moments to collect themselves in between customers, effectively serving as replacements for one long extended break.

Worked 12 hours day or night, alternating.
No such thing as a typical day. I worked "offsites" so moving crude from pipeline to tankage then into the units.
Moving intermediate products between units for further refining.
Moving finished product to tankage.
Also worked on the docks fueling cargo ships on the Great Lakes.
Also operated their water treatment plant.
You either were working furiously or had nothing to do.
Management often does not understand that if a process operator is running around working hard it means the process has problems and the company is not making money.
If a process operator is sitting around relaxing the process is smooth and the plant is making a fortune.
Yet the management needs those relaxing process operator for when the s--- hits the fan and the process has to be corrected NOW!
Often management wants to reduce staff past the point of  acceptable risk and will find consultants to explain why and how this can be done. Then when it does not work as it does on paper, it's the process operators fault.
Watch out for this.


I feel lucky to have the role that I do. I feel appreciated and supported by direct supervision. Opportunities to improve are not only heard but directly supported and fully encouraged at all levels of management that I have engaged.

The thing that stands out the most is the people, The environment created by the company overall has attracted some of the brightest, positive and hard working people I have ever worked with. As such I find even the most challenging situations or circumstances manageable knowing that my co-workers / managers are eager to help when its needed. 

There will always be a few people who detract from the overall but they seem to be few and far between.

Now off the bat i will say why i gave it a one star in Job Security/Advancement. I was once again contracted threw this company with Labor Ready so i wasn't really going to advance here, BUT i still loved this Job due to everything being almost perfect with it. Safety was threw the roof, the people were extremely friendly, and the pay that even i was making and ALL i was told was i wasn't making half of what they make and i was making over a grand every two weeks. i NEVER had a bad day at all. I lost this sight due to an ex who was my dependable ride at the time as i had to be at sight before 6 am and no bus went out that way at said time and it was to pricey of a cab at the time which i lived in South End Halifax and the sight was in Woodside Oil refinery again i digress as i was also to blame for not implementing how imperative that i get there before 6 and she simply took to long getting ready.
