I think people need to understand that at first, you gotta dig a ditch, you gotta prove yourself.  You won’t just get that high end pay.  That’s for sure. High end pay is earned.  
But if you want to join a family?  A company where you can count on a guy to get you out of a fix, and vice versa?  A place of a hundred positive people looking to help achieve a goal? People that care about you as a person.
experienced people that are ten, fifteen years into the job, and will be able to get you to where you need to be?

Then I suppose Jatec is one of those places. 




What is the best part of working at the company?
The best part of working at JATEC was the people and the opportunity to be part of meaningful, large-scale projects. It was a good environment to gain experience, take on responsibility, and work alongside knowledgeable team members.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful part was managing the pace and demands of large, fast-moving projects, especially when priorities shifted. At the same time, if you spoke up and said you were struggling, the company would do what they could to support you and help get you back on track. They also put leaders through additional training and coaching, which showed a real investment in helping employees succeed.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The culture at JATEC was driven, team-oriented, and focused on growth. The work environment could be fast-paced, but there was a real emphasis on supporting people, developing leaders, and helping employees succeed through coaching and training.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day involved coordinating with field and office teams, managing project priorities, solving issues as they came up, and helping keep work moving forward. The pace was busy, but it gave you the chance to take ownership, build experience, and be part of meaningful Alberta wide projects.

Best part of the job is the people you work with. That being said everyone in upper management is two faced and backstabbing. On one hand they will be positive uplifting and help motivate you and tell you that you have a future while pretending to care. While the rest of the time it's talking about you behind your back. Blaming you when procedures for generic tasks are not existent and no training is provided. Make sure the hiring promises are written down, they lie. Alot. Do you want to advance your career? Better become best friends with the owner because no matter how good you do your job you will be replaced the moment someone cheaper shows up. Dont expect proper job place training either. They show you a couple of folder and pretend that's sufficient. Multiple departments are run by heads who have literally zero experience and overwork thier departmemts because of thier lack of knowledge. Jatec is not worth your time if you are seeking meaningful employment, they will stab you in the back.  HR is literally at the owners bec and call, they don't care about humans beings or thier lifestyles. They pretend too don't mistake that for caring though. 

I’ve been with this company long enough to see the recent management change, and unfortunately, it hasn’t been for the better. What stands out most is the constant turnover. All you need to do is check the job boards — the same positions are posted over and over. It’s hard to build a strong team when people keep leaving, and it creates a feeling that everyone is disposable.

Another concern is employee tenure. Look around the office or on LinkedIn, and you’ll notice very few people have been here for more than three years. That says a lot. Most people either burn out or realize quickly this isn’t the place to build a career. Without long-term employees, there’s no real stability or depth of knowledge, just a cycle of new hires starting over from scratch.

What’s even more frustrating is that management seems laser-focused on the “core” group and overlooks everyone else. If you’re not part of that inner circle, don’t expect much support or growth. It leaves the rest of us feeling undervalued, and honestly, like placeholders until the next batch of hires comes in.

Bottom line: If you’re considering joining, ask yourself why the role you’re applying for keeps popping up online. That alone should give you pause.

If things go wrong, Edmonton owner will throw you under the bus even if the Edmonton group was the responsible party. Back door project management by the owner with his “trusted” foreman friends along with a dependancy on procurement through the Edmonton office lead to inefficiencies and shortages that could not be dealt with locally (Calgary). 
Plans were in place with umbrella company for Edmonton shortcomings, made no difference. Umbrella company also stood by even though Jatec plans and procedures had been pre approved by both umbrella company field manager snd Safety rep at our Jatec safety meeting the same day. 
If you are a labourer or looking to get into the occupation, this company is fantastic. If you are a Superintendent level or higher, move on to better opportunities. 

As an electrician working here was tough and was only a pay check till I found literally anything else. 

There is no real electrical work other then splicing light poles and changing lights on occasion. The all the cable pulling and PVC  conduit is done by labourers which should be done by an electrical apprentice! The foreman for the electrical section has only ever worked there so has no idea how do to anything other then street lights.

For equipment operators and labourers it seems like it's a good job, they do have benefits, but if you're looking for electrical work its not worth it.

A big pet peeve of mine was that they would not let us work 5 -10 hour days but made us work 5-8hour days and come in on Saturday.  This way we only hit overtime half way through saturday at our 44hours, instead of getting paid 2 hours overtime everyday Mon-Fri.

The office management has no idea the realistic expectations that the guys can perform in the field. All they see is numbers,  not hard work ethic and not understanding of having a bad or average day. No matter how good you do it always has to be better. Even if you set records. Now to talk about job security, they will literally use you when you’re needed the most and as soon as you are no longer in a big interest of making them money they will lay you off without and notice what so ever. Seen it happen to many guys. I myself am fortunate enough to have quit before this happened to me and then shortly after almost everyone was gone. Over all horrible company to work for the only thing that kept me there was working with the guys in the field. They are all good really good guys but the office ruins this company.

I had a very disappointing experience working at Jatec. I was terminated without cause despite the amount of effort, professionalism, and dedication I brought to the role. The management was some of the worst I have experienced in my career. Communication was poor, support was lacking, and employees did not feel valued or respected.

I consistently worked hard to maintain positive relationships on site, keep projects organized, and contribute to the team environment, but it became clear that management decisions were inconsistent and disconnected from the realities in the field.

I would strongly encourage anyone considering employment here to carefully evaluate the company culture and leadership before accepting a position.


The executives for the infrastructure and subdivision departments encouraged independent thinking, and gave employees the freedom to make logical decisions without the fear of retribution. This attribute; however, was lost on the telecom division, where the department heads micromanaged every minute aspect of construction. Their overbearing and critical traits created a toxic environment, which led to a low morale among the team. Once these individuals were removed as the executive leads for the project, the team morale as a whole began to increase. All in all my experience with the company was positive, as the good times outweighed the bad. The field crews were a great group of guys to work with that gave their all everyday.
