I recently made the decision to join this company after doing my due diligence as I wanted to associate myself with a great company that is established, committed to process, and a Leader in industry. I am happy to report that I have found exactly what I was looking for at GN Johnston Equipment. The management is extremely supportive and very  much partnered for my success. The onboarding plan is the best I have ever encountered in my working career. I was introduced to my office buddy for navigating the company and she answered all of my questions with ease. A typical day for me in the office is to begin at 8am and work until 5pm (with an hour for lunch and coffee breaks). The only negatives I can say is that the office environment is suits and business formal (Friday is business casual), and the requirement for working at the office is a mandate. I wish that the company would be more flexible for us knowledge-based positions and allow business casual clothing in today's workplace of remote employees. For most employees in the Mississauga office it would seem there is a considerable drive at both ends of the day to be in the office for set hours, which hurts the home/work life balance. I have learned that this company has a majority of employees who have worked here for many years. This shouldn't be thought of as a complacent company as it is very much a Leader in professional development and there are many success stories from the employees. I will say that everyone is very respectful to one another and this culture is noticeably embraced by the whole team. The most enjoyable part of the career is being surrounded by like-minded people who all strive to be better. I have worked with Technicians my whole life and feel I am qualified to speak to the professionalism that my co-workers have. We share both our customer concerns and accolades with the whole team to make us better. Seriously, everyone is committed to our customers and it shows. This company truly takes ownership of the relationship seriously and guides it's business success based upon the customer experience being painless and easy. I have to mention that I have spent some quality time with our CEO, and can state that he is awesome. I say this because he is a very genuine man who is open, reasonable and extremely articulate. Within a few minutes of meeting him, I could sense the feeling of pride he has in truly caring for his employees. I will say that in my position I have worked with many CEOs over the years and our CEO ranks right up there with the best of the best. It is very apparent that our CEO cares about his people and our customers. I am so happy to be working here at Johnston. If you are serious about your career and want to surround yourself with successful people, I implore you apply today.

Working here felt less like a job and more like slowly dissolving into the beige wallpaper of a never-ending workday. If you’ve ever watched Office Space and thought, “No company is actually like this,” this place will change your mind. After a while, you start to feel trapped — living out your days as a dreary man in a tedious job, wondering when exactly your ambition slipped quietly out the back door.

Management doesn’t make it any easier. Many of the decision-makers come from industries like Bell Canada and seem disconnected from the technical realities of this one. Their choices often feel like the path of least resistance: politics over practicality, bureaucracy over common sense, and favoritism over actual field experience. It’s hard to feel supported when the people setting the direction don’t appear to understand the work or the challenges that come with it.

The routine becomes so monotonous that it almost feels surreal. And if you’re not one of the “favorites,” the feeling gets worse — you can end up with barely any work assigned, which makes the job feel even more pointless. Sitting around waiting for tasks that never come creates a strange sense of stagnation, like you’re being quietly sidelined without anyone saying it out loud. It wears you down in ways actual hard work never would.

There are far better options out there now, and this workplace simply isn’t the place it was 20 years ago. Whatever it used to be, the culture and direction have changed, and not for the better.



To begin I would like to say that a typical day at my job or at my work consists of travel and going to different places every day and meeting new people every day and helping them to learn and expand in their knowledge concerning forklift operation for myself what I believe that I have learned is how to be a better trainer in the fact that sometimes I have to modify how I train and how I teach so that certain individuals that might have learning in abilities are helped to work around those things so that they can have success my upper level management team is quite supportive in helping me so that I have success with our customers and our students and the cultural workplace environment that exists is quite good all other trainers are always willing to help as well concerning the hardest part of the job I find that the travel sometimes can be extensive but all in all I'm okay with it because I enjoy driving and going to new and different places and for me the most enjoyable part of the job Is the way that I can go to different places on a daily basis and meet different people and help and assist them so that they can have success And remains safe in their operation of all of the forklifts that they are obligated to use for their job titles

Having no experience with computers, my boss handed me a large manual, which I took with me to the library over the week-end.  I managed to turn on the data processor and the rest was quite easy to learn.  Every employee was friendly, and many years later, I still can say that the best friend I have is someone who worked by my side at Johnston.  The management was classy, helpful and always eager to help productivity at all levels.  The hardest part of the job was that I couldn't please everyone at the same time, there was always a rush for proposals to be finished at the end of the day, but some of the 12 salesmen wanted their proposal to be printed before others (orders were strict:  first come, first served).  The most enjoyable part of the job was that the equipment was functional, never any problems operating due to failing equipment.  End of year parties always very generous and gifts for employees' kids (my half-siblings, since I had no kids).  All in all, I would consider working at G.N. Johnston Equipment Co. Ltd. again if an interesting opportunity came up.

Was formerly a decent company. Times got tough, they showed their trust colors. Despite head office ramming down your throat about how workplace harassment, they themselves are the biggest abusers. I watched a close friend suffer harassment from another co-worker. Nothing was done 
I tried to help him, but the manager was best friends with my buddies harasser. Company looked the other way. After a tearful last workday watching my coworker tremble in fear from harassment, He died of a heart attack !
Company made a big show at his funeral, but reneged on promised money to his wife and son. After his widow called for nearly a year, they didn't have decency to tell her that no, they had no money as promised. But a week later, they spent tens of thousands on an afternoon party at a downtown hotel, Just for a get together. 
My friend was mistreated 
His wife and kids still grieve the loss of their father. 
If you're an actor with no mechanical skills but can tell jokes and party with managers, you'll do well at GNJ

This is a great paying job, they supply van with gas ,most  tools and give a good tool allowance including work boots and all PPE, coats and coveralls 
You get bonus on any maintenance contracts, and rentals, any sales on lifts or equipment. 
They allow quite liberal use of company Vans including personal use on weekends. 
I see the techs every day with kids in Van go to school morning and afternoon 
You won’t get this carte blanche for personal van use at any other lift company.,and without paying taxes! 
Those techs must have some work share hours to be able to spend so much 8-4:30 time driving their kids. Company is gracious to allow that because they know each move the tech makes with GPS in Van and company cell phone app. 
They supply an iPad and cell phone and allow modifications to vans, like huge speakers to blast music while streaming you-tube videos. 
They have a ton of directives,, rules and regulations but rarely ever enforce rules 
If it wasn’t for the management, it would be 5 Star.

Was great up until about 15 years ago. New CEO and then purchased by parent corporation. The employee culture, morale, general happiness has been continuously declining since. They claim to care about customer service but actions show extremely differently. They claim to care about employees and employee feedback but nothing is ever actioned based on bi-annual employee survey. All employees are a number. Tenured employees are seen as an extreme cost as opposed to resources for knowledge and improvement. 40+ year employees retire without even acknowledgement or mention. Tenured positions not replaced but work downloaded to other employees. Overworked. A lot of stress and burn out. Micromanaged. No manager is truly permitted to make any decisions. Controlled directly from the CEO for everything. The only focus is on the short-term bottom line, no real thought of the future. Tools necessary to improve production are refused based on their cost without any consideration on long term ROI. Was once a very great place to work but those days are long gone.

Well, the person who trained me was quick and impatient and was the type who likes to Lord over people.

After 3 months; I couldn't take much more of this and asked that he simply keeps his distance as the situation had become borderline harrassement.

But was still willing to work with him and continued to do my job.

The hours of which were all over the map. Days, evenings, nights and weekends in the busy time.

I had every day in November booked except for a 2 day Skyjack training near TO.

However, the work itself I enjoyed.

Then 3 days before my probation was up; I was asked to leave with no preamble or questions about the situation.

And to top it off, an extremely disorganized company as it took them 6 weeks to finally figure out my commissions owed me as I had to re-send them my billing at least 3 times.

The only good thing I have to say was that the branch manager was sympathetic to the situation but really had no power to do anything.

I actually pity him!

Although I have only worked at Johnston for a short period of time. I have found it to be a very welcoming and established company that really cares about every individual worker and helping us all succeed, they do this by having a very good on-boarding program that provides you with the training and knowledge to progress into your role with the company whichever area that may be. My experience talking with everyone at my branch is for the most part very positive towards the GNJ organization as a whole. My service manager is like no else I have ever had the privilege of working for, he is a previous tech himself so knows exactly hat the job is about and is ALWAYS there to help you in whichever way he can. All in all Johnston is a company that if you have the opportunity to get you foot in the door, take it you will not regret it! I see myself being here from now until the day I retire. 

It was a very fast paced environment, always something to do the days would go by fast.  There was too many managers and not enough people performing what needed to be completed.  Lots of overtime offered. The benefit package was great, they even had a pension plan after 2 years of service.  There were about 300 employees at this company and 147 technicians on the road providing the services at the customer site. I learned a lot about working with many personalities and I learned that not everyone will get along especially in a large environment like that but its very important to stay professional at all times and just smile and say hi.  The most enjoyable part of job was getting to post on the phone with the technicians they were so different from each other and it was amazing to see how different everyone really is from one another.  I also enjoyed having a large lunch room where we could choose what kind of hot beverage we wanted, coffee, hot chocolate, french vanilla, tea or water it was all in a free machine in the lunch room.
