Working an Occupational Health and Safety internship on a 2 week on, 2 week off rotation in a remote mining location in Nunavut. Experienced many different aspects of the Health and Safety field in the mining industry. Learned a lot about conducting thorough inspections and investigations, JHA's, Risk Assessments, Conducting a safety meeting, and many other requirements to be successful in my field. Was fortunate to work hands on with an Industrial Hygienist and learn proper sampling methods (both noise and air samples). Worked with a fantastic OH&S team who took me under their wing and enstilled in me some invaluable knowledge. Communication was a challenge at first, as many employees speak mainly french with broken english, and I am an anglophone. This was something I had to overcome and I feel has helped me become a better listener. The best part of the job was the relationship with the team I worked alongside. Knowing I could count on them for guidance, and that they appreciated and valued the skills I brought with me was a great confidence booster, and proved to me that I can be an asset to any company.

Mixed experience here.  Positives was the experienced to work in a new industry, in the Arctic, most of the people I met, but it was later outweighted with heavy downsides.  AEM Meliadine was the first place where regulations and laws were to be overlooked - using non-qualified, non-licensed people to do regulated work.  I came under fire for touring the safety guy from my supervisor, general supervisor and later superintendent, obviously not a good thing.  Lots of other preventive maintenance things or imperative repairs were wrote off until later disaster to boost balance sheet and individual management figures (general supervisor, superintendent, in my case).  Eventually it become a depressing place to work.  Too many insider hires and friends promoting friends.  Had to face anti-Mideast hostilities here and came under fire for complaining to management about that.  Becoming a non-pluralistic work envionrment.  AEM needs to cleaning house in my opinion at Meliadine in Site Services and possibly elsewhere or risk a large financial loss.

A typical day involved morning meetings, environmental inspections, which included water sampling, wildlife and camp inspections, and drill inspections, ensuring that all employees at the camp were in compliance with environmental protocol that followed Nunavut government regulations. Weekly tasks included inputting data and making reports, specifically for camp water consumption, results from inspections, and wildlife reports. As a student, I learned to further my independence, problem solve and better my decision making in tough situations. My supervisors were very helpful, and furthered my confidence in myself for making individual and group decisions. The hardest part of the job was working long hours and working in harsh environmental conditions. The most enjoyable part of the job was working outdoors and constantly having jobs to constantly keep myself busy.

My experience at Agnico Eagle was disappointing. I was hired for a technical role, but was provided with limited support, unclear expectations, and insufficient time to demonstrate my abilities. After only two months, I was let go without being given the standard three-month period, which prevented me from qualifying for employment insurance.
The onboarding process was poorly organized, and I received inconsistent feedback from the manager. At one point, I was told that my skills were below junior level, which was demoralizing and unprofessional. The lack of structured guidance and support made it difficult to succeed.
I wouldn't recommend this company for those seeking a collaborative and fair work environment.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Management makes false promises and recruits laborers by enlisting friends and relatives, which often results in having bad co-workers. Additionally, there is a noticeable presence of drugs on their site, and they seem indifferent because of the labor shortage. Their policy regarding criminal checks is misleading; all you need is someone to refer you as an employee, which undermines the integrity of the process.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A lot of time is wasted waiting for a machine to operate. During a 12-hour journey, half of that time is spent waiting. This makes long days boring and unenjoyable. It's frustrating!e!

In Nunavut, 2 weeks on - 2 weeks off, 12 hour shifts. Pay is slightly less that other provinces but there is a 15% bonus for working in Nunavut which makes up the difference. Plenty of activities and events on site. Regular communication from upper management on that status of the mine. There are some cases of nepotism and friction between people from Quebec and the other provinces. Advancement is usually slow. Job security is good. Perks, gifts and benefits are good. Hiring process takes a few months.

At first the place looks nice and dandy.  People seem not to care about you and Finance is a the worst, they don't even acknowlege you when they walk by.  Fake smile.  People don't seem to care about other people.  HR is very unorganized and no communication what so ever.  They put you on contract and treat you as you don't exist.  HR has a very poor management.  People come and go and HR does not let the people that work there know who are the new people or when people leave the company, people don't seems to know where these people are.  You ask HR and they pretend they don't know.  HR treats people very poorly and absolutely NO Communication.  Its terrible.  They seem to be nice at first until you get to know them.

Was a great experience working in camp setting and learned a lot. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Was hard sometimes maintaining clean floors and keeping dirt and dust down during high traffic times in hallways

Very safety conscious and proffessional

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Maintaining a high level of cleanliness in hallway and washrooms. Using floor scrubbers dusting and mopping keeping dinning area clean

 There is lots of different Heavy equipment jobs here usually everyone starts out on the cat 795s or 777  but from there h could switch and go and do many different things. It’s a camp job so it’s like ur second home

I do not run equipment to much any more but most of the equipment is newer 
My job is moving the power cables around and shovel moves and the drill moves   Organizing blast days and all the work to get everything out of the area for blast then rebook everything back up and back into production safely and quickly

They genuinely care about employees health and wellbeing 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The travel to and from site.  

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Excellent. Everyone pulls together to make things happen safely and in a timely manner 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Morning meetings with n/s and d/s crews.  Meeting with production  personnel.   The rest of the day dealing with parts / planning/ crew issues.
