The pay and benefits are terrible. You’ll have to drive to their office, work one hour unpaid every day and then use your own gas and vehicle uncompensated, driving around to job sites.

Some of the management and journeyman were downright awful and treated guys like garbage and some were okay - total crapshoot.

There is no job security and you’re thrown to the wolves because they don’t pay enough to have a proper number of journeymen. My first week in the trade, I was wiring houses all alone, by myself with no supervision. 

There is also no overtime because they bank all your overtime hours at straight time. Don’t you dare try to take a day off and take pay though or you might not have a job to go back to. I was warned about that by one of the disgruntled guys when I started. 

One of my journeymen (company man) told me it was normal to not be able to afford to live and to just take loans through your apprenticeship. I decided that was not normal though so when I got my book, I found another job with OT, benefits and double the pay that didn’t have me driving all over the city with my own gas.

If you’re looking to try something new and think the trades are for you, this is a good place to get started and cheaper than trade school. Work here for a year, get your level 1 and then go to greener pastures. It is very easy to get a job here.

This is the worst job I’ve had since I started in the trade. It’s all uphill from here but it’s a start. If I wanted to get into a trade and didn’t have money for trade school, I’d start here.

KJay is a great place to become a starter electrician. They will give anyone a chance and they are seemingly patient with new comers. Most of the workers there are nice and are willing to take a few minutes to teach you the right way to do something. Some of the drawbacks included banked overtime hours, rather than time and a half, one hour of required free labour every morning to load up materials, and their benefits system. Their benefits package is a deep dark secret that nobody knows about. apparently workers are eligible for benefits after one year, but workers are never informed of this, and to apply you have to fill out a tower of paperwork, which can then take months to process. Great place to start, not a great place to stay.

I started my apprenticeship at kjay and loved working there the pay sucked Had to drive all over with no fuel compensation but i loved all the journeymen i was with and loved the work i was doing. how ever management just wasn't there they have a few amazing managers and bosses but the few that aren't so great are very contradicting and abusive to their workers. when i was there a few of the jman were starting to band together to ask for alternating shifts and possible unionisation under the threat of leaving. workers are unhappy and it can start to show in the work they put in.

Like others said, get your bluebook and find better because this is bottom of the barrel.

They survive off of a skewed Jman to apprentice ratio. I was on a site with 1 Journeyman and 10-12 apprentices. Safety culture was non existent, never once did a pre-job hazard assessment. Was seen as weak to wear gloves and no chance they were provided for you.

We worked 50-58hrs/week (odd 8hr Saturday) at a very hard/fast pace and my checks were laughable. Banked hours, no overtime. Never saw that anywhere else as an Electrician.

A good place to work if you want your hopes and dreams of becoming an electrician dashed.

It doesn't matter how good of a work ethic you have, they will lay you off for no reason, while keeping employees that have not been there as long as you, and advertising the job you held the next day.

The amount of money I spent on fuel; two hours of driving a day, only to be laid off along with another coworker who had been there for over a year.

If it's so slow, why are you still advertising open positions? 

Terrible place to work, wouldn't recommend anyone take a job with this company. Journeyman ratio is almost non exsistent. Pay is poor as well as overtime is banked. Benefits only after a year, spending vast amounts of money on gas is required for starters. I have also witnessed abusive behaviour in the workplace. If any company needs unionization it is K-Jay Electric.

Most of what the other reviews say are true. A very thankless job  that'll get you into the trade. Honestly there's so many other jobs that pay the same with a fraction of the effort. In general the Electrical/Trades industry is hardly worth it anymore especially at Kjay. 

K-Jay Electric is a great place to be employed and I feel like the owners really do care about my well being and success. Working in the commercial division has given me the ability to develop a good understanding of the electrical trade. I will continue to work here as long as I can.

I would like to give you all an essay on how and why I would not recommend working here, but I'm afraid that they might take legal action against me for doing so. They tend to make problems 'disappear' so Ill keep it brief.
