The exodus from ophthalmic techs will likely continue, and smart individuals will choose other opportunities. The intense high volumes of patients are exhausting and management cannot fully appreciate the work that is involved to tend to the patients. Management is out of touch and do not fully comprehend the work technicians do as they have never been a tech or bothered to learn the intricacies of ophthalmic teching.
There are multiple factors for the continued high turnover. However, the common reason is management's emphasis on profit. There is great emphasis on patient numbers to get as much billing as possible. (expect intense high volumes of patients) There does not seem to be any investment in staff or team building. (low wages for the amount of work expected) Management are petty and nitpicking. There is no care or compassion for employees who often go above and beyond and actually work extremely hard. If you are tired and unwell no one cares and the doctors will complain about you that you're
not working hard or fast enough! It's interesting that a "healthcare" facility cares so little about the health and well being of its own employees. Only a few of the "favourites" are ever considered.
Until there is a complete paradigm shift, Kensington Vision and Research is going to continue to lose the best and brightest.
The pension and benefits are great but the work environment is toxic. Favouritism, gossip, low wages and low team morale are dominant issues to contend with.

Location is convenient- onsight parking (you must pay for parking) and TTC streetcar steps away. Busy clinic, expect to see close to 100 patients a day. Benefits are great- Kensington is a HOOPP employer. However management is awful. Environment is toxic, turnover rate is growing. Currently no manager there. They value certifications so if you are not certified despite your experience - you won't be getting paid a fair wage. 

Working at Kensington was a good one, the management are ok in terms of their job but cold to the employees, I learnt doing your job is important but you have to put the resident first, the work place culture is good, coming to meet the same residents all the time, they should at least change their assignment every month. Working in a very neat environment.

It locates in down town Toronto and the salary is too low

Night shifts without support of RN’s and managing 50 residents

Lack of motivation due to low payment

I worked 13 years there. And 8 years s
traight nights with some great people and we always helped one another when possible. But alot of the time we worked short and made the best of it. My residents loved me and I took good care of them.  If they woke up and were hungry or wanted a drink I would do my best to get what they would like. 

Direct and efficiently manage the Human Resources functions across all Kensington entities, reporting to the Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer. Transformed HR function from administrative to strategic contributor, including working with senior management to drive key strategic initiatives.

it’s a good organization with a great mission. there are plenty of areas that need improvement like staffing changes, workload, micromanaging, patient load. the people you work with are amazing, upper management needs work and diversity. salary is low compared to other healthcare organizations. 

It is fun and entertaining working with the team. I see that they help one onother, and they treated everybody as their family. if there is something that I don't know they are always there to assist me and to help me.

It is a place where you can start your goal as a Nurse.It is a big help for not only for the nurses but ofcourse to all who are in the health care team.
