Would you believe me if I told you that a job in sales boosted my overall happiness, helped me shed the burden of social anxiety, and has given me a confidence that I can’t shake?? No?? Two weeks ago, I wouldn’t have believed it either. Considering being a sales person means interrupting someone’s daily activities in a day and age where everything is so easily and readily available and talking to them about a product they likely aren’t interested in, AT LEAST 80% of the job is being blown off… How could this possibly have a positive affect?
The other day, one of my customers basically asked this question. After the polite chitchat followed by my sales pitch and her ultimate rejection, with a sincere look on her face she asked; “So, how are you really?” 

I responded so enthusiastically. I said, 
	“Honestly… I LOVE this job. I was pretty nervous about starting it because I am an introvert. So much so that I actually wear headphones at all times when I’m in public to discourage conversations with strangers. So having to go out of my way to be the one starting potentially unwanted communications was nerve wracking. Being told no, or being completely ignored by people who don’t want anything to do with me, is not easy, but has no real lasting affect! The key is to wipe the slate clean and approach each new person with an open mind.

	I’ve only been at this job for about two weeks and I can’t believe how much it’s changed me! I’ve traded tips, recipes, stories, and met so many interesting people with a variety of occupations, including an all year Santa who has reindeer who are being starred in the upcoming Santa movie! I find myself excited to approach each new customer, even after being told to go away from the start. There is no telling what amazing person I will cross paths with next!

	Obviously the MAIN point of my job is to make sales, but with such a high amount of rejection how do you make the best of it? How do you stop the constant rejection from stealing your motivation? I try to end each conversation by making someone smile. As important as it is to get the word out there about the product, it is JUST as important to ensure the experience is pleasant to prevent any negative affiliation with the product or the company. If someone isn't interested but has a pleasant interaction they will be more likely to come back in the future, or even pass on the information to a friend who might just be interested! So if I can’t make your life better with the product I’m offering how ELSE can I improve your day. Having that outlook has taken away most of the stress. I can’t even go to the grocery store without finding myself compelled to start a conversation, or compliment someone on a shirt, hairstyle or tattoo. It’s like I’m a different person. I’m happier, more energetic, and more enthusiastic about life.”

	She was impressed with my response. Commented on how amazing it is that the job has had such a positive impact in such a short time, and revealed to me that she was actually a reporter for CBC! She often finds herself in the same position, stopping people who may not want to be bothered, to discuss local news. She said she knew immediately that she wouldn’t interested in what I had to say, but didn’t want to be the rude or discouraging interaction that she has also had to deal with. 

	She went on to tell me about a great Ted Talks by Jia Jiang called “Rejection Therapy”. A man who has worked to desensitize himself to the negative impact of rejection. He has done this by approaching people with odd requests and offers and dealing with their acceptance or denial to learn from each experience and grow, instead of letting it shrink his spirit. This is essentially what the sales job was doing for me, and I find that remarkable!

	A big part of all of this is due to the fact that Kognitive Marketing puts so much importance on motivating and helping their employees! I can’t even begin to express how surprised and grateful I am for the experiences I have had in the past two weeks!

Ineffective and horrible sales training, you are expected to figure it out causing low employee retention rates

90% do not achieve targets and 90% do not stay on for a year showing you should only treat this job as a stepping stone

Incredibly clueless management who are disconnected from the sales practices of their high performers and of sales themselves considering they cannot teach you sales as they are focused on management rather than sales.

Incredibly artificial positivity, motivational, and other than cult like environment showing no sales training other than "positive mindset" , "keep approaching everyone", and "just believe" which are euphemisms for I don't know what I'm doing or if I did, I'm not going to tell you.

Encouraging opinion suppression and criticism suppression due to the politically positive nature of the group which focuses on motivation rather than education because they have nothing to offer. Constant job security threats as a result.

The hardest part is dealing with the gas lighting in performing subpar at the job from factors outside of your control.

Management does provide support for struggling individuals showing attempts at trying despite the futility. The current territorial district manager is a better pick than others due to their ability to nurture or at least resolve issues. Other managers would be horrible.

Cheaters and deceivers rise to the top and get promoted for their numbers as long as you don't receive any official complaints. Monthly social events are enjoyable as it is a great way to meet new people

Significant tediousness with the CRM & misleading job position as it is promoted as full time when your hours may be cut based on performance.

Overall, if you don't have any sales experience, it's a great first job to learn on the job and figure it out.

Don't stay on the company based solely on the commission structure since there is a minimum threshold you have meet in order to receive any commission in addition to the activation requirement of the cards.

In other words, people have to activate the card for you to get any commission largely on their own volition outside of the sales interaction.

Stores highly vary based market demand for the product affecting your compensation as the majority of people you will be promoting to have the card or are not interested.

I worked with Kognitive Marketing for a few events in Toronto in 2014, including the home show, auto show, baby show, and bridal show. Overall I've had a very positive experience. I live downtown so travelling to events downtown was never a problem - travel is a common complaint I see in these reviews. If ever there was a training session that was out of my way, management was able to accommodate me by having me come in early during set-up time to run through the job details. The jobs I did were essentially getting the attention of customers/passers-by to come over and fill out a survey or play a game, and all it really took was a lot of energy and a positive attitude - so a training session, at least after the first event, wasn't really necessary. I'm generally introverted but still found the job easy and enjoyable. We had numbers to meet but Team Leads were very understanding if traffic was low because of the timing, if weather was bad, etc. I can imagine how sales goals necessitate a lot more pressure and encourage a more competitive/unpleasant environment, especially in dealing with credit cards. I was never a sales rep so I can't comment on that - though I thought I would've liked to be one because the pay was always a couple dollars more. For the majority of the events the hours were very long, often 11-12 hours. I'm not sure that this is legal and there was no overtime pay but I knew what I was getting into and signed up for those hours (you didn't have to work full days) because during a short period of 3 days I would easily make $500-600. Employees I worked with always received bonuses we were promised, even if we didn't quite make the numbers expected. It was a fun job and coworkers supported each other well even though we were always exhausted by the end of the day. Managers/Program Coordinators (above Team Leads) were pleasant and easy to deal with and responded quickly to calls and emails. 

I don't think I was ever paid in a timely manner, but I saw this pattern from the start and knew to expect it. This was never an issue for me as the pay was always good and I wasn't depending on it to make any deadlined payments. Another issue is that there seemed to have been some office politics going on, quite a bit of trash talk coming from Team Leads about Coordinators/Managers, etc., which I found to be in bad taste and a negative attitude does affect the work environment. Also, although my experience was great, I referred a friend who worked a credit card sales job about a 10 minute walk from her home who is extremely extroverted and high energy. She hated the job and said that her manager was not motivating, sometimes mean, and worried about her job security. I think it really depends on if you are working with a team and whether or not you are doing sales - specifically credit cards. 

I would happily work with Kognitive again.

I decided to be a Field Marketing Representative for Kognitive as a summer job and it was probably the worst mistake of my life. My very first days of training, my manager showed up an hour late each time, which should have given me a clue to how unprofessional, disorganized, and immature this company is. But I had hope - I mean, the managers made it sound like such a lucrative job. 

After training, my hope just plummeted. As other reviews have stated, the company makes you travel out of your town, which wouldn't have been a problem except for the fact that I don't drive. I had to take public transit to work, which took an hour each way, and also cost me upwards of $15 a day, which was not compensated by the company. 

I was also told during training that I would be given commission based on my daily sales, which was a lie, along with being told to manipulate customers and do "whatever I could" to get them to sign up for a card. 

Later, my first couple of paychecks were late and incorrect. I had to call a million people to try and fix the issue. I was also told not to take any breaks if I wasn't selling a lot of cards that day, which is absolutely ridiculous considering you're on your feet for eight hours straight. I had three different managers during the three months I worked, all of which had something wrong with them, whether it was unprofessionalism, incredible strictness, or an inability to help me with anything. 

Tech support is a joke and don't know what they're doing. Often times, they don't answer the phone. HR is the same. 

I ended up losing the job because I was placed constantly in a location with low traffic and a high number of current cardholders, in which I was told that it was my fault for not being able to sell. When I asked to switch to a location that I sold reputably in, they refused, and after an abysmal week of sales, they fired me. 

My biggest gripe with the company is that everything is YOUR fault. Printer stops working out of the blue and can't print a customers card? Your fault. Sold three cards but all of them weren't approved? Your fault. You pitch perfectly and do everything you can to get a card but everyone you speak to doesn't want one or already has one? Your fault. They threaten your job weekly if you don't sell upwards of 5-10 cards a day, show up without warning to your workplace, and refuse to accommodate you in any way in the slightest. 

The only pros I can think of is that I improved my pitching skills during this job, which made me better at talking to people. Also, as long as you give two weeks notice, taking days off and switching you schedule around was fine with the managers. 

Don't work here as a FMR. And if you currently do, run. Run as fast as you can.

When I applied, the site said they would give me 16.50 per hr, commission.  Turns out the the base pay is 10.25, and if your commission equals more than your base pay for the day, they will remove base pay and only give your commission.

They also have bad management too.  One person will tell you to go to, say Toronto, while another will tell you to go to Oakville, on the same day. There seem to be little or no communications between field managers.

I also asked for a day off, they told me in the beginning they can give it to me, turns out the new guy will not, I complained to the people that said I can, but at the end , they would just say its not their job to schedule me. If the guy said no, its a no unless u negotiate with them which I tried already and he said no.

They also tried to schedule me to work 7 days in a row with no over time until I complained, but they still gave me 6 days in a row. I mean how can they do this, you will lose your voice after like 2 -3 days.

It not really much of a team environment either, my job is to pitch Canadian Tire Credit Cards to customers at any Canadian Tire stores. You are basically sent to a store by yourself with no co-workers to talk to. All you do is to talk to angry customers who wants nothing to do with you because NO ONE WANTS ANOTHER CREDIT CARD IN THIS ECONOMY.  Don't get me wrong, there are some nice customers that would ask you for your pay and sign up just to help you out with your commission.  But you honestly would feel terrible after a day with people yelling at your and insulting u or ignoring u. and that's like 60% of the customers . 

They also told me they will schedule me LOCALLY, Nope nope nope, scheduled me an hr and a half away in the middle of no where, almost at the end of the next city. If they tell you local? don't believe them, they are just liars. 

You are also almost not guarantee a lunch everyday or breaks unless you make the 12/ day quotas, 8 hr shift, no break, no lunch. That's gonna burn anyone out, it is stressful getting that quota and they always expects you to get more. Good luck to anyone who tries to get that in a bad economy.  

I've only been here for a little bit over a week and I thinking of quitting, and think about how much problems I've encountered since I went into this company and it's only been a week! I would recommend nobody to come here to work unless you can handle being yelled at 8 hrs in a row and be on your feet all day. And able to deal with confusing management.

It's an okay place to work. I was hired to work the Canadian Tire Program. Basically it consists of intercepting customers through Canadian Tire Stores & Gas Stations to pitch their branded credit cards. 

Sales targets and pressure from middle management can be unrealistic, at times, inconsistent with realities on the ground, but there are opportunities for advancement, and commissions on good day can be quite nice. During summer months you''ll make $15-20 an hour, so it's good for students, but the off season (especially January-March) can be very slow. There are a few star reps that do really well, and the recruiters will be hyping you with the possibilities of hitting those stats, but they are the exception rather than the norm. 

The job involves a lot of customer facing interaction, so if you're looking to get out, meet people and network, you can pick up quite a few connections on the job.....maybe a lead on a higher paying sales gig. A lot of perseverance required, as sometimes you'll have great sales days. and sometimes you'll have a not so great day. You never know

My advice to you though, is dependent on where you live. If you are working outside of Toronto or travelling to work outside the GTA, there is room for growth.. as there are still new customers to be had. However, if you work in the GTA... avoid like the plague... unless you really need a job and you don't mind driving/busing all over the city. The market for credit cards is saturated. It's not undoable but it's hard work. On the bright side.... if you can sell this stuff.. you can sell ANYTHING!!! Great prep for more advanced sales roles.

These people set up a kiosk in my university so I believed it would be a great place to get in on the ground floor of my career. I'm rather introverted, so I believed that I could work on my face-to-face selling techniques. 

I was hired quickly and did some training which was alright. But when it came to shift scheduling, it became a logistics nightmare. Shifts scheduled in far-reaching locations, and lack of management support were the norm.

I fell ill and ended up in the hospital, so I couldn't work. I never heard from these people again. Let's not forget they omitted 2 hours of pay from my paycheck and the constant calling to head office to find out when I was working, it was TOTAL GARBAGE. The continuous "Oh your management has been trying to reach you..." I got the emails addressed to EVERYONE in regards to shifts so why wouldn't I receive those destined to me alone???

I should have realized the lack of organization when they misspelled my information so I couldn't even login to their website for training and shift management purposes. My biggest regret is that I stopped job hunting in earnest when I was hired so I missed hiring season for university students. I'M FUMING. 

Please believe the positive posts are from internal management trying to save face. This place is even less professional than some boiler rooms I've seen. It's so hard to find non-call centre jobs in Montreal, but this place will have you longing for a head set and limited bathroom breaks!!

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!

Sure, you can tailor your hours to your needs. So long as you make sales, you can pick your shifts. But that still means hauling your butt to a far off suburb for a shift every now and then, rain or shine. It's still proposing a high interest credit card to blasé customers and being refused nine times out of ten. It's still never receiving commission because you need to make twelve sales a day every day for two weeks, which is incredibly difficult and rarely seen. It's still knowing that the bank will rake in thousands of bucks for every activated card while you receive minimum wage.

The supervisors try to make it easier. They know they have to, otherwise people would leave after the first week. They're supportive and want what's best for their team, but management is the real pain. Those higher ups will be harsh and will expect high sales numbers no matter the weather or station location. They also seem to keep the exact formula for commission a secret as long as possible. There is very little room for advancement and management will take advantage of those who do want to advance. 

It's a hard job. It's frustrating. But, if you don't take it too seriously and approach every person in a friendly, jocular manner, it's bearable. You learn how to speak to people off the cuff and make small talk. Sales is a harsh domain to work in, definitely a challenge that's not for the anxiety stricken and shy. Yet, it will help you get over that same shyness.

The Field Marketing Representative job was a tough position especially since i had no sales experience.  I was lucky enough to receive top notch 1 on 1 training and honed and development my skills.

As I improved, I was able to make some pretty good money at the job - working as a Sales Rep for Canadian Tire credit cards.  In my first 3 months I made about $17 per hour but then when I joined the travel teams that went to more rural areas I was able to earn closer to $25 / hour.  

One of the benefits of the job is that you really control your hours which means you can make as much money as you want / depending on how hard you work.  There were some weeks where I worked 60 hours because I knew I wanted to take a week off to travel so I'd set goals to achieve the same money in a shorter period of time.

Some of the challenges with the job is that it is repetitive, the schedule is often only solidified a couple days before the week and that the retail stores we work in can decide whether we can work there or not.

Last - some of the negative reviews on this site are likely from people who struggled with generating sales and who made little money because of it.  There is a commission component to most positions within and if you aren't performing, the manager will put you on a performance plan and coach you.
