LIGHT OF THE PRAIRIES

we supported adults with cognitive and intellectual disabilities on a daily basis, we supported their needs, goals. and challenges that has come with them. I learned that working as  team member, and communicate is a must. The management in this company has come along way, as i was with this company for just about 8 years. It has it good communication with each staff member. if there was any issues you can go and talk to your team supervisor or higher up if need be. 
This job you go on outings in the community, involve the clients, go swimming, go the parks, walks, hikes, go bowling etc.
The hardest part of this job was working with the individuals and trying to find out their goals and challenges and helping with out as best as you can. You also got to be up to date of each individual you work with, with their needs and supporting their behaviors as well. 
I loved working with each individual and building meaningful relationships while figuring out their needs if they are non verbal, communicating in their own way to understand their needs.
i enjoyed myself working with this company.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Unpredictable hours, competing and sometimes incomplete directives from senior management, staff turnover

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Caring and supportive direct support workers. Kind and involved families. Senior leadership communication was inconsistent and expectations were not always clearly communicated. Organizational decisions could feel sudden and impersonal, making the environment feel unstable despite the strong frontline culture.

A typical day was welcoming guests to the program, getting to know them by name and introducing them to clients from Light of the Prairies. We would then do the activity for the day that was planned, go see the animals, jump on bouncy castles and play games. There was no 'typical' day. Each day brought new people and new activities. 
I learned how to communicate effectively, how to work as a team, and most importantly how to build strong and healthy relationships with everyone. I also learned what it means to be a leader and how to plan and balance administrative tasks as well as watch my plans come to fruition.

What is the best part of working at the company?
You get to enrich people's lives that have intellectual disabilities!

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Shift work, and sometimes struggling to find coverage if you're sick. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Management is supportive, team leads are like family. Coworkers tend to get along, with the exception of some people not communicating or listening, but they eventually get let go. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
You come in, cook whatever meal is required, do some programming, some baths, help feed and change, do daily logs.

Working here has been a really positive experience. From the beginning, expectations have always been clear, which makes it much easier to feel confident in your role and know what’s expected of you. Management has also gone above and beyond to support my growth and development, and they genuinely want to see staff succeed.

One thing I really appreciate is that if you’re ever uncertain or uncomfortable about something, management is approachable and more than willing to help when you ask. That level of support makes a big difference and helps create a respectful and supportive work environment.

I worked part time with LOTP for just over a year. A very good NGO that respects and celebrates staff and clients alike. Nice bonuses and perks. Highly recommend getting involved with this org if you are considering this line of work. Lots of training opportunities, and a very human/down-to-earth person-centered approach to how clients are provided for. I've experienced gossip and badmouthing in this sector of work, however this was never remotely a concern with LOTP. Based on my experience, I would say it is a very good place to get your footing and definitely to stay with long term. 

Love it.Clients could be difficult,and have behavioral issues like hitting staff or other stuff.You could also have colleagues that are manipulative but it depends on how you handle it and grow a thick skin..otherwise,it is cool.Life teaches you how to handle certain situation and people,but then having a great team lead is everything as they do a great job at managing the situation and not add fuel to an already existing fire.If it gets out of hand the people at the top do a good job at deescalating feuds without discrimination in any way.

I would get there at a 11pm to 930am i would clean check on the clients once an  hour then at 6am I would get on e client up and help him with getting ready for the day mack breakfast give him meds then go get another client up help him get ready for the day feed him give him meds then go to the last client get him up give shower get him dreeasd for the day give him meds then put the other 2 on the wheelchair van then I would make the beds clean the bathrooms then do the daily logs

Some of the managers were just there to make it their own personal play ground. If you do not vibe with them or their favorites, then you will feel the brunt of their cliques. It reminded me of high-school. The only nice thing was the clients. It was sad to watch so many people take advantage of their positions. Examples of this, going to a park on company time and just sitting around chatting when the clients are clearly bored.

you can learn all time during all shifts from the schedules and the clients as well as team leader. From the internal courses the company have and the documents provided to you. learning time management, hardworking, night shifts and various shift can be given, the employee should be available 24 hours a day and the schedule will be presented bi-weekly
