Labatt Breweries of Canada

Some people absolutely love working here, however it is a pretty specific box that you have to fit into to be accepted.  There is frequent turnover, restructuring and directives which forces you to constantly change priorities and just become a songbird for the company, no matter the tune.   

If you fit the exact match of who they are looking for, which is a massive majority of the company (white, male, 20s-early 30s, into team sports, and have no work life balance) you will succeed quickly.  There is a huge focus on the GMT program and having everyone go through the same process despite background experience.  The traditional stream is starting as a Merchandiser, which is a lot of work (well over 40 hours per week.)  Eventually you get noticed and will be offered a Sales Rep position, there are 4 levels of sales reps.  If you are willing to sacrifice your entire personal life and relocate every 6 months to a year you can quickly scale the ladder.

It is always a moving target and they will never say you did a good job, instead it's always posed as "how could we have done this better".  You may have been focused on one thing for 6 months but then the company has a new direction and it's completely scrapped.  Lack of communication is rampant so distrust in management grows quickly.  It seems like the blind leading the blind since there are so many levels of middle management all looking out for themselves.

It is openly talked about how pay has only increased once in the past 10 years, and nearly everyone works over 40 hours a week with "voluntary" options to work evernings.

Benefits do not start until you are a Sales Rep, which for most people will take about a year.  I think this is unbelievable to not give employees benefits considering it's one of "Canada's Top Employers". It used to be a probational employment until you had 2 promotions (which could take over 2 years) but this changed recently.

Diversity is completely absent and is the least culturally "woke" company I have ever encountered.

They will lay off employees of over 20 years due to restructure with no heads up.

As a Commercial Procurement Manager, my day typically involves overseeing the purchasing process, negotiating contracts with suppliers, and ensuring that our procurement strategy aligns with company goals. I start by reviewing stakeholders' requirements, reviewing current agreements and analyzing supplier performance data. Much of my day is spent collaborating with various departments, such as sales, trade, finance, legal, and logistics, to ensure smooth operations.

Through this role, I've learned a great deal about cost management, vendor relationships, and strategic decision-making. Effective communication and problem-solving are key skills, as every decision can have long-term implications on the company's bottom line.

I work with an extremely talented team of procurement professionals, ensuring we help each other to have the resources and support we need to succeed. Balancing strategic planning with day-to-day operations is challenging, but it’s also rewarding to see how our work contributes to the company’s success.

Workplace culture tends to be dynamic and collaborative. I work with different teams regularly, and the focus on efficiency, cost savings, and quality drives our daily operations. However, the hardest part of the job is managing tight deadlines and dealing with unexpected supply chain disruptions. There's always pressure to ensure deliveries are on time and meet quality standards.

The most enjoyable part of my role is negotiating with suppliers and securing favorable terms that benefit the company. The sense of achievement from saving costs or improving supply chain performance makes the challenges worthwhile.

Typically daily routines involve morning team meetings, followed by daily production balancing of the previous days production. Then there is always a raw material inventory count happening daily to ensure all just in time deliveries are going to meet the weekly production schedule. There is a weekly balancing of the sales to certain vendors as well as cross reference check with inventory cycle counts done daily to make sure all produced finished goods are accounted for. Then there are weekly and monthly end reports done up on Microsoft excel to record individual daily productions and sales. Inventory counts include raw materials from glass bottles to ingredients to bottle stoppers and labels. Also weekly counts of products in the warehouse are done in order to make sure all numbers from head quarters add up to our numbers produced in the system. The warehouse is also audited weekly to check for quality assurance. From tightness of shrink wrap around the finished product to pallet squareness of stacked pallets in the warehouse, all of this is recorded and put into the weekly reports. The beer on hold is checked daily and when passed inspection from quality it is either released back to the storage or sent back upstairs to be dumped and re ran. The hours are normal operating times from Monday to Friday eight am to six pm.  There is a huge sense of culture in all Labatts operating facilities. The hardest part of the job is making sure all counts are completed on time and entered into the system before the deadline so that all numbers will be in order before daily production begins. Working in a brewery is a great team environment as everyone works together to get the goods produced. Labatts is a world wide leader in beer sales and has high quality standards.

(St-Hubert location) The warehouse environment of working at Labatt was awful. There's a reason why they have such a high turnover rate, even including with supervisors. Upper management kept pushing more demanding quotas, and adding greater workloads purely for the benefit of their own bonuses. Favoritism had a strong place in the culture of the workplace as well, turning a blind eye to unsafe work practices committed by "preferred" employees while harassing others for minor errors.
Additionally there's a huge wage gap between both departments (up to nearly $20/hour difference!), mostly due to new employees having no right to vote within the representing union (Teamsters).
The actual work continuously became more demanding, increasing quotas while adding a greater variety of inventory which makes hitting your quota even harder. And many who failed to do so would be pulled into a manager's office to be scared with unemployment if they didn't meet quotas.
The biggest pro and reason I stayed with the company as long as I did was due to good co-workers I had a pleasure to work with. Management aside, there was great camaraderie between the majority of employees. Aside from that, the only other unique benefit were free and discounted cases of beer every month and on special occasions.
Career advancement requires a Class 1 drivers license, no matter if you plan to drive trucks or not, so be aware of that too.
I highly recommend anyone to look elsewhere since there is barely any future to look forward to at this work environment.

A typical day at work is calm and flexible. There’s no strict monitoring of what time I arrive, so I can start my day at my own pace by opening my email and Teams. Even when something urgent comes up, my time is respected, and there’s no unnecessary pressure. I also have full freedom to restructure or modify the processes I’m responsible for, and by the end of the day, I have the autonomy to prioritize tasks as needed.
Management is exceptional. My direct manager is the best I’ve ever had—she genuinely cares about my well-being and ensures I fully understand the processes. Senior leaders are also approachable, respectful, and pleasant to work with. The company as a whole has a culture that prioritizes people. There are numerous benefits and initiatives aimed at ensuring employees feel valued and supported.
The most challenging aspect of the job is the uniqueness of the company’s terms and processes. It requires a willingness to not only understand the content of your work but also adapt to how things are done, which can be quite different from other workplaces. On the other hand, the light and pleasant work environment, both within my team and across departments, is the most enjoyable part. There are always initiatives, events, and reasons to celebrate, which makes the experience truly rewarding.

Work-life balance tended to oscillate between being really great (compressed work week) to downright hectic (12+ hour days 6 days a week) depending on business volumes and staffing levels.

The culture is very results driven, which isn't for everyone. If it doesn't drive the bottom line of the company, then it's not worth your time.

Pay and benefits was okay - you can do quite well on variable compensation if the company has a good year. Unfortunately that sometimes led to decisions which were only beneficial in the short term to maximize cash flow, such as delaying badly needed maintenance projects which led to equipment failures and frustration further down the road.

You'll get to work with some really great colleagues, many of whom I remain good friends with to this day, nearly 10 years after the fact. 

I felt they treated me well for nearly my whole tenure. If it weren't for a really bad department manager I might still be there - he was gone 2 months after I left, so I kind of regret not sticking it out...

Like any job, you'll get out of this place what you put into it - the opportunities for skills training and cross-functional experience are second to none, so take advantage of them - they will set you up for future success both here and anywhere else you may work in the future.

I’ve had a very positive experience working here so far. The company culture truly stands out. People are friendly, supportive, and genuinely collaborative. From day one, you feel included. The onboarding process is well structured, and the buddy system makes a huge difference. Having someone assigned to guide me through the first few weeks helped me adapt quickly and feel confident in my role.

The office perks are also a major plus. The workspace is modern, comfortable, and designed to help you stay productive. Perks like coffee bars, team lunches, and social events help create an enjoyable and motivating environment. Leadership also makes an effort to keep morale high and ensure employees feel valued.

One of the biggest highlights for me is the ongoing development plan. There’s a clear focus on professional growth, with regular feedback, training sessions, and opportunities to learn new skills. I appreciate that the company invests in employees and encourages internal mobility.

Overall, this is a workplace where you feel supported, respected, and encouraged to grow. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a positive environment with real career development opportunities.

On the surface it looks like a great place to work, but once you dip your feet into the water you realize they find any reason possible to give you the lowest salary possible. Yes there's a pay range for every band within the company but guess what everyone at that band is making the same amount and is at the very bottom of that range. 

The bonus, if you ever get one, looks good on paper but 0% of 15,000 is still $0 so what's the point of working harder when sales in South America decide more how much bonus you get than what you do in your own job. 

The whole job culture is built on lies, one person fakes their "hard work" until they get promoted and they leave a big stinky pile of <inappropriate language> for the next person, then the next person cleans up that <inappropriate language> that was left behind and again fakes it until they get promoted and this just keeps happening. 

Now you could have 10, 20 or even 30 years of experience but if unless you are coming from a University from Ontario they don't want you and they won't promote you. But hey who doesn't love listening to a 23 year old kid that has never managed people and never even drank beer before.

Lastly there are a couple managers that will lie, cheat, steal and fake paperwork to get rid of the competition for their promotion. In fact he faked a safety violation against another manager to get his position.

Dealing with 'talent acquisition' frustrating. Week of onboarding. No senior corporate management knows whose job is whose. "did 'they' show/tell you this?" who is they? You are they. Factory is a maze. You will be delegated to the basement for God knows how long. If pouch is running you will be delegated to pouch. Shift work.  Seniority rules. If someone wants your shift - they will get it. You will mostly be 3-11 or 11pm-7am. You will get switched around. The overtime can be good. It is the only way to make good money. Well not good but decent. They tell you you will get full time but chances are you won't. I was there during a labour dispute. There is a palpable tension between management and workers. Most front line managers are right out of school and gung-ho. doesn't last long. Turnover of them is astounding. Most of the full time guys are happy to help you. However. This is the cattiest place I have ever worked. And I have worked in retail and kitchens.  Gossip Gossip Gossip. It is true favourites are played but you will always get that in union environment. Its good and its bad. I had fun  and it was the worst job I ever had. If you can't get anything else, go for it. They just got a pay raise.
