At first you will feel appreciated at Leavitt. That will fade quickly as you realize that there is a strong culture of favouritism and hypocrisy created by a highly egotistical management group that only want to wring as much as they can out of you with as little recognition or reward as possible ( there are a few exceptions that are wonderful leaders but they are overshadowed by execs. and forced to comply or risk losing their position) You will be overworked and underpaid, disrespected, micro managed and expected to accept it all with gratitude and a smile on your face. Covid gave them the perfect opportunity to dispose of any employees that had ever expressed a concern over favouritism, extreme pay scale discrepancies, continuous unmanageable workloads and unreasonable target expectations. There is a serious divide between those of value and those that are reminded they are not when small requests such as space heaters in winter are denied due to budgetary restraints and yet the managers/owners are driving Mercedes, Lexus’s and Maserati’s . Many people have left voluntarily after the “Covid” axe was dropped due to a high increase in stress levels. Employees that were let go can see their jobs reposted 2,3, or 4 months later but were not recalled to their positions. If you are in serious need of work and can ignore and function in spite of the negatives shown above you will find there are some wonderful people working here sticking it out until a better opportunity comes along. These people will make your days more bearable. Also, there are a few depts that do manage to isolate themselves from the toxicity and appreciate their position at Leavitt. 

Working in the Leavitt Machinery Operator Training department has been an amazing experience, and in my short time in the department, it has been a fantastic opportunity for me.

Starting out in a new job, I was personally rather nervous and excited.  From my very first day, everyone in the office made me feel welcome and comfortable, answering my questions so patiently and doing whatever they could to help and accommodate me.  During my training, my supervisor/manager was absolutely amazing.  It was made sure that we talked over everything I would be doing and that I was comfortable.  With this huge learning curve, to make the process even easier for me, I was eased into each new task in ways that were specifically meant to help me feel as comfortable as possible.  My wonderful supervisor even sat down with another one of the managers in the office to discuss what would be the best way to accommodate my individual needs, making me feel as confident and comfortable as possible.

Everyone is always willing to help out when I need it.  My managers and colleagues are all amazing people.  Even if I ask a thousand questions a day, my supervisor and colleagues help me and answer questions with so much kindness and patience.  Even the smallest acts of kindness, asking how my weekend was, wishing me a good lunch break or rest of my day, even just how everyone pokes their head in to say "hi" in the morning, makes the work environment friendly and welcoming.

I have learned so much and grown as a person, even in this short time.  I would definitely recommend working in the operator training department.  The people, the environment, and the opportunity that comes with it are all truly fantastic, and this has been an experience that I will never forget and will always value.

Typical work day is spend bouncing from location to location doing service calls. Dispatch is very disorganized a lot of the time and they often miss the absolute basics like getting the name of the person who put in a service call and what the problem is. If they give you a wrong address and you lose a bunch of time driving around, even if they admit it's their fault, writing off lost time is a sure way to lose even more time explaining yourself as if it was your fault. Pay was good. You have to keep up a pretty hectic pace, and refusing last minute overtime calls is a sure way to get on the bad side of management. If you just keep quiet and take anything that's thrown at you no matter how unreasonable, then you'll work out there. The entire culture of of the company is reactive rather than proactive. Nothing changes unless there's a complete disaster or they get caught doing something they shouldn't have been doing (legal wise). 

Overall its a good company to work for. Work environment is good, relaxed, not many tight deadlines on IT projects, you may not have shiny offices, people are friendly. There are lot of learning experience, not always with the mainstream tech stacks though, need to work with legacy systems sometimes which is challenging without proper documentations (I've learned Classic Asp :P). On different projects you can work from start to finish so lot of learning opportunity there as well. Salary and benefits are competitive. 

Only complaint I have, in my opinion, management doesn't have moral integrity, they laid you off with the slightest hint of distress in the economy without even trying to keep the employees. I got laid off even before my friends who work in the hotel and travel industries saying the business is down. Also, when government subsidize you 75% for the qualifying companies they wouldn't take back the employees or even update the employees why they don't qualify for the subsidy. Seems like they are not down much in their business, but just decided not to pay the employees to save more money. Just a disappointment!

The work environment is generally supportive and friendly. There is always the odd ball employee who has an attitude issue. But for the most part everyone is receptive and friendly. 

The team I work with is set up to be encouraging and supportive. you are trusted to get your work done and are not micro managed. But you do have weekly and sometimes daily check ins that help keep certain priority's in view. 

The training has its short falls but is helpful and generous when compared to most employers. you definitely are not left stranded or placed in your position until you have a little bit of knowledge of procedures and requirements. 

The hardest parts is working by yourself/remotely. If you do not have good time management skills or the ability to self motivate you can quickly become overwhelmed. The same thing can happen if you are someone that struggles without the extra social interaction an office might supply. Or if you have a hard time signing off for the day. 

Pros:
Very flexible, understanding management, happy team, new challenges, the benefits package, PTO and the changing work requirements. 

The company is good but they make you believe it's the only good thing in the world, almost like a cult. Started off okay but I instantly felt discomfort talking to my manager. Every meeting was intimidating and stressful, they make you feel like a fool and are very closed off on anything you might want to present or contribute. I was left out of team emails and not even introduced to other team members in my first meeting. I had a couple of humiliating experiences before I decided to move on because I have been fortunate to work with some really great managers and leadership and I just knew that this was not right. The resignation was very awkward and it was apparent that it made them upset. All sorts of communication stopped right after my resignation email. My manager wouldn't even reply to any of my emails. I am just glad I found a much better role and competitive pay and benefits. 

Leavitt has some of the best benefits out there, most employees are driven and friendly, some employees are under the union and have even a few added benefits.  But the way that it is managed each department fights against each other and you always have to have everything in writing and watch your back because of it... Employees have very little input to progress or improve the work load... if you can work past the negativity and just do what you’re told then Leavitt is a great place to work for, if you’re passionate and always trying to improve yourself and move forward I suggest you look elsewhere...  The high ups are great but unfortunately the lower managers are horrible.  Our branch manager’s motto at our meetings was always if you don’t like it the door is there instead of listening to employees and trying to improve...

I was hired on to Leavitt Machinery through recommendation.
Having it been through a trusted source and having little experience coming out of University, I looked past many of the initial warning signs. The first of the warning signs being a high turnover rate of their employees. within the year of working in the OPSC, in a department of 20 individuals, 4 employees had left. The second warning sign was the initial salary that was offered. Understandably in an entry level position one can expect industry standards and not much more. This was not the case and was well below average to the point where I took on side work to ease the financial burden.
 as a commission structure would bolster ones Salary, this too was greatly lacking and did not meet industry standards as well.

I have worked at Leavitt Machinery for several years in the Operator Training department, and have found great satisfaction with this position, department, and the company as a whole. 

This department has grown exponentially in the years that I have been here, and continues to do so. This is no doubt due to the strong team of account managers and operations administrators, backed by our extremely supportive management team. In my time here, I have been able to grow within my role as well as take on new responsibilities as the department continues to expand.

Things can be very fast-paced, but the company and our management advocate strongly for a healthy work/life balance while continuing to reward the efforts being made by every team member.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The company is very flexible with your time - you are trusted and given autonomy to get your job done and are easily able to work around appointments, picking up kids from school, etc. as needed.
Benefits package is quite good (better than I've had at previous employers).

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Senior management likes to be involved in the approvals of a lot of decisions, so it can take a lot of time for things to move forward.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Culture is overall great, there are a lot of good people working there across departments. People are always willing to answer questions or help out how they can.
