Sunglass Hut... This company has gone through alot of changes over the recent years. This company use to offer a very rewarding pay structure for those who performed well. Earning up to 5% commission and bonuses. They have restructured pay 4 times in the past year alone and it's become a serious joke. There is no consistency in goals over LY and that's how you bonus and make commission in this company. Once you take the business to its near maximum potential for the area you live in, it's like hitting the ceiling. Yearly raises are laughable and insulting averaging 1 to 2% even with good performance and gains. You have to be committed to this job 100% as it will require alot of attention to be successful. You will receives calls in your time off, have to drop everything for people not showing up for whatever reason, or if people quit before you have planned PTO you are canceling your vacation... it happened to me multiple times. Alot of managers seem to have a hard time even using their PTO or holiday time off before it expires. It can be hard to balance having too many employees or too little... And with recent labor reduction it's hard to keep any quality employees, nevermind develop them into super stars that will help earn you money... cause if the store doesn't hit goal NO ONE makes commission on the team. The people calling the shots higher up I assume have zero experience in the field as they are rolling out more micromanaging task than actual strategies to improve overall business and development. They are trying to spend as little as possible to just gross as much as possible at this point, seeing employees as 'cost' and not real players in the game. Home office support is so terrible you have to wonder who is in charge of it all and let it get so bad. This is a good stepping stone business for new managers now a days and that's about it. Future advancement is not likely and they have reduced field/area manager positions in the last year too. Use this company to learn some great customer service and leadership skills and go find yourself a real sales career where your income isn't so limited. If you're complacent and a middle of the road kind of person this job might be right for you.

When I began my journey at LensCrafters, I thought this is a retail place like no other: energetic, care about their people and customers, innovative and seriously no competition from other optical retailers. My boss at the time was great but tough - yes there were tears and blood but you certainly were rewarded and felt that this is the place you can grow...but that changed, once management changed.

I was always supportive of management and their initiative, but when it began to feel like they are out to destroy your career, and if you felt you were already down, the shark came to that final bite, it became overwhelming...it felt like there was noone else to turn to. This is toxic - also toxic to talk about your staff in negative respect, because you do it to one, it eventually comes back to you and for upper management to do that is a graveyard digging for you alone.

If you can bend over and take all the beating with a smile and "genuine" acceptance then this is the place to work (because that same manager will have the same done from up above - so yes it comes from top down).

To conclude, if company is saying "customers and employees matter", simply following up with cutting employee hours/ store manpower, clients complaining because there are 4-15 customers per associate on regular basis, LAB running on bare minimum manpower, management overworked as a result, and upper management pushing because their arms are twisted (and ofcourse they make much more than those slaying inside the store, only to be told "you are doing a terrible job, what's going to change? Do you really want to be here?"

Honestly, I wish that the company was consistent with decisions made and direction it wanted to head towards, inconsistency created discouraged managers and staff therefore becomes temporary as this type of environment is no longer an opportunity to grow, rather it becomes a temp job.

Problem will Usually be either management or personality conflicts.


 A few things to note:

There used to be commission up to 5% which helped offset low wages. Now it caps at 1% and only if store makes sales goals with accompanying even lower wages. 

Upper management on the regional level has directly stated that part timers does not matter because they are not and can not be commited to SGH. 
Example of this in company practice is an employee of 2 years, who has consistently met sales goals finally gets a raise. But when this happenes he is nearly bumped up to the new minimum wage right before the new minimum wage is made law. There fore it so statutes as a raise and not mearly giving people a livable wage.

As a sub management/full/part time employee, you will find yourself closing the store everyday. There is no steady set schedules, so it will be very difficult to plan your days. Be prepared for 3 hour shifts so if you have a long commute please consider. 

Managers make their bonuses based on store sales even if they themselves don't make their existing sales goals.



This job is ideal for someone who is in school who needs a few odd hours of work here and there. 
This job is not good for anyone looking to make a living or need more then 15 hours a week. Because it will suck up all your free time which you could work somewhere else where there is a more predictable schedule.

Working at SGH as an associate was great. The commission structure and bonuses such as contests were great incentives.

As part of management however, it is much more stressful. Oftentimes, upper management (DM, RM, FT) uses intimidation to drive their managers towards their goals. The commission structure was changed and now it is pointless to put in extra effort to make a sale (for associates and management team) because you might make enough to pay for a coffee at Starbucks per paycheque if your store makes goal. Scheduling is needlessly complicated and difficult. The company should use something more like the Sling app.

RM/RT changed often while I worked for them and therefore was difficult to maintain continuity in training style, expectations, and knowledge about stores. Because of this, it was difficult to address issues or establish trust between team members. 

A huge positive however, was my team. Our store was a very well oiled machine!

Very toxic work environment. Very little support from upper management, unless you are favoured, & there is a constant threat of job loss for poor performance, to the point they start off meetings with references to quitting if one can't handle what they are about to lay out. No accountability for upper management, only at store level. Teamwork is non existent.  Absolutely zero work life balance. Your personal email is bombarded continually 24hrs/day as they expect you to give your email address since they don't provide separate email accounts for Managers. Good luck getting paid properly and accurately.  Communication is a huge problem even though there's at least 2 conference calls a week, sometimes as many as 7 in 5 days. Gossip is a huge problem. Opticians run the show basically since there is a shortage of them. Which leads to student opticians working without proper supervision or adequate training to be on their own, which is not allowed. Even with very competitive wages offered for opticians, It's very hard to recruit them due to the company's reputation. Loss Prevention is clearly under par. 
Stress level is very high.

The organization makes amazing products, some of the best progressive lenses on the market. My rating is has not reflective of the brand it self, rather its leadership.  Luxottica aside, which is the frames side of the business, is very well run by long-term leader. You'll spend your days gleaming over depressing sales results on Monday, then slogging through over technical presentations at retail with reps, and then host your 1:1 each Friday to justify your week and preparing for Monday's interrogation by management that merely attends all the 'fun events' as part of their commitment to growth. If you want to bring your former learnings and expertise to the table, don't bother working there. You'll be a direct puppet to those in charge. 

I work for a big Italian chain (120 stores), the most famous in Italy. Last year my store was the best (the highest sales, the best team)!
My optical shop is  in a trade center opened 7 days on 7, from 9am to 9 pm and we are just 5 co-workers. The schedule is stressful, but I like working with the customers and they appreciate my kindness and my competence.
I am able to recommend suitable lenses after viewing the prescription given by the ophthalmologist or optometrist. I often perform the preliminary examination with the auto-refractometer. I am able to use the cash desk, I prepare showcases for the store. I repair eyeglasses and get the dioptre reading from ophthalmic lenses.
I can learn something new, about the eyes and ocular health, every day.Periodically I participate to special courses organized by Salmoiraghi and Viganò.
The hardest part of the job is to get  new clients.
The most enjoyable part is to see the customers satisfied.

A typical day at work is arriving bright and early, setting up my desk, and preparing my daily routine. 

I've learned a great deal about customer service and addressing all issues and concerns of all our clients. 

Our management team are very helpful and are always there to aid us in any way possible to ensure customer satisfaction and an enjoyable work place.

My coworkers come second to none, we have built a strong family type bond and love working together.

Hardest part of the job I would have to say is the volume of calls we get daily. On a daily basis each customer service representative handles anywhere from 170-210 calls. Its a pleasure taking them but it is quite the volume of calls. 

The most enjoyable part of my days are when the customer hangs up each call knowing that we ensured their satisfaction and resolved any issue at hand.

Hiring process didn't take that long, but the training wasn't well planned so by the time you start working you'll realize that you don't really know much about anything. The manager I had was bad at managing time, and so when it was time for my shift to begin, she basically pushed her work onto me. The company wants you to constantly be on the customers when they're trying to shop, and it's really annoying at times, and you can see how uncomfortable some customers are when you're constantly lurking around them. Then the company began what they called "labour management", and so the hours were cut in half, or in my case, you would receive no hours at all. Commission isn't really satisfying, but you're pressured to make sales even when no one is coming to the store to buy anything. Honestly just wanted to make some easy money, but after a while, I started to hate the atmosphere and so I left.

Great place to learn and grow a completely unique set of skills. They provide good training, cross training to other departments is encouraged and appreciated by everyone. It's a luxury retailer, so price is a big objection, and it feels like the stores are left to fend for themselves as to the overcoming of those objectives. Vague answers from some of the coaches for the different day-to-day struggles different teams have to face. The few great managers, that genuinely seem to care about the job and their teams, are not provided with the tools to support their teams.

VERY difficult to remove any associates that are bad for the business, but great open door policy means there is always another avenue if you need guidance.

Overall, the good outweighs the bad on any typical day.
