EA2 Construction Inspector- Water Control and Structures

This position included: site management and safety supervision (daily safety tail gate meetings and issue documentation/rectification, timekeeping for up to five contractors and their equipment, clarifying work expectations to contractors on issues of construction methods and tolerances), foresight of possible problems in construction and their solutions, keeping and maintaining sufficient records for reference in the future and for the completion of as-built drawings at the end of each project. The interpretation of construction drawings & special provisions. Knowledge of the principles of the specific design. Regular systematic inspection of structural elements. Inspection and testing of materials (i.e. Concrete testing and various material sampling), keeping accurate vertical and horizontal (control) survey for the checking of forms and structure placement daily. Cross sectioning of waste material stockpiles with total station and occasionally steel tape measure, rod and NA2 level. Set up of temporary bench marks within work site, for accurate locations with no line of site to benchmark via traverse.  Full deck surveys to set chamfer heights and pour elevations through use of rod and NA2 level. Accuracy of within 1-2 mm was expected. Manage and inspect large orders of fabricated precast concrete in house at various fabrication plants, including: 3000 mm pipe culverts (Quantity: 24), road barriers (Quantity: 100), post tension box girders (Quantity: 20). Level 1 and level 2 structural inspections of existing timber, concrete, steel bridges and culverts throughout the province. Entailed visually capturing the structure and its surrounding area for future reference via digital camera. The breakdown and inspection of all components of the structure, and filling out a detailed report for each of the possible 2400 sites in Manitoba. 

EA1 Surveying Aide- Region 5 The Pas, MB (2007)

My first Co-op was in The Pas Manitoba, as a surveyor on road work and preliminary road survey. As a rodman my duties included the accurate and stable positioning of a carbon fibre rod and prism. I also assisted the winter highways division in the removal of a winter roads bridge in Island Lake Manitoba.

Worked with awesome people. Everyday was enjoyable but the salary wasnt.

I would start work around 7:00 am and got off at 7:00 pm it was fun but extremely hard work . I took my flagperson training though Manitoba Infrastructure & Transportation at the end of April , 2011 . Then I was going out of town for almost a month blocking off one lane well another crew checked the current, speed , and depth of the rivers . I learned about team work , honesty , hard work . MY co-workers were a great bunch to work with . Management were good people if I need to talk to one of the managers they didn't have a problem if I need a day off . The hardest part of my job was throwing sandbags into the loaders but it was a good workout . The most enjoyable part of the job was when one of the guys got buried up passed his ankles cause the bagger was unplugged and it was stuck on our chute it was a good laugh

MTI is a great place for an environmental student to gain experience with environmental assessments, Environmental Site Assessments, water quality monitoring, working with different legislation and mitigation measures. The job consisted of many site visits on different proposed infrastructure projects to gain information about the site before the works occur. Sometimes the job can be slow as there is only so much work that the supervisors can trust the students with but, there is lots of room for students to undertake their own projects and work with supervisors to help develop relevant skills of interest.

Although this job could be physically tired at times, it was a great experience. Management and coworkers were generally friendly. If I ever needed a sick day or time off, the boss was very accommodating and nice about it. The one potential issue is that it would possibly be difficult to get this job if you don't have a connection (i.e. one of the main reasons I think got this job was because a family friend who works in the field recommended me, and it seemed like other summer students I did the training week with were in the same boat of having had connections that got them the job).

They are great to their co-op work term students (average 15-18$/hr) 
Management is management, there's always a few miserable hard arses in every big company. But if you can stay positive and respectful you'll be fine. The office portion is the more serious part, if you are out in the field that's where the fun is! (work trips typically every couple weeks) But over all I loved this job, I'm actually hoping to get there again once my schooling is done.

im a working person, as i like to wake up early everyday to be a productive person and assign my daily tasks. i learnt to be dedicated and take responsibilities of my actions, show team work spirit and respect work culture, the hardest part of my job is working under stress and manage conflicts between team. the most enjoyably part is considering work as a hobby and create a warm environment at workplace.

High turnover due to wages not being competitive. Going on 4 years from the end of the last contract. It can be an enjoyable job depending on your coworkers. They train you on several pieces of machinery and the spend tens of thousands training you. Lots of people use this as a stepping stone and move on to higher paying jobs. 

Depending on the department within the province there could be seasonal stress specially during flood season. The province spends enough money for staff training and professional development. This is a great place to work for.

The duties consist of managing a consistant road network throughout the sub-region. Dealing with a number of other agencies (municipalities, water stewardship, RCMP, department of fisheries and oceans, and towns and villages.)

I worked with an excellent group of people, was well trained, and received good pay as well as the opportunity to work overtime and earn extra. The policies and procedures in effect are helpful and effective.
