MB Country Living

They hired me as a MIT (manager in training) after applying for part time cashier. 7 weeks in, they had the merchandising manager fire me without any reason given, not even my direct supervisors, no previous discussions on performance. They even changed my job title twice while I was working there. “You’ll be an MIT. Actually, we decided you should be a CEL for Fonthill. So we decided we’re going to keep you as an MIT”. How is one supposed to succeed at their job if it’s being changed all the time?

Schedule was given to me very last minute. I was always having to check my payroll to make sure everything was ok. They expect way more than they are willing to give.

Their core values state “we care” and “we go to the right people” but they don’t care to allow growth or improvement among employees if they don’t discuss any faults beforehand.

Honestly, when they hired me, they said they had no store for me to be at and essentially hired me without a position available, then they had two other managers come back from maternity leave. If they had of told me they had too many employees, I would have understood, but they left me in the dark.

To say the whole ordeal was disrespectful, was an understatement. Had they explained a reason to let me go, I would be able to own up to it and work on it whether for future endeavours or for the company.

They have countless employees who have very strong negative opinions about the company and the way it’s run, they have a high turnaround rate for staff because they are under valued and unappreciated.

This company has the potential to be great, to be something better, but they really need to prioritize properly to get ahead of where they are at. They have unhappy employees and claim they care to listen, but the words fall on deaf ears.

In my 2.5 years with MB Country Living, I can honestly say I’ve been given incredible opportunities for growth — and at a very fast pace.

I started as a Retail Store Manager in 2023, quickly moved into a Store Director role, and then transitioned into Head Office as the Inventory Control Manager. I’m genuinely grateful for the trust, support, and opportunities that have come my way throughout this journey.

Working closely with the Procurement and Category teams has been a constant source of learning — there isn’t a single day that goes by where I don’t pick up something new.

Having the chance to work under Jason Trickett has also been a great experience. He truly believes in his people and motivates us to succeed while fostering a strong sense of teamwork across departments.

What I enjoy most about my job is the people — it’s a genuinely great group. We work hard, we laugh often, and we keep each other motivated while maintaining the high standards that come with being part of a rapidly growing company.

Like any business, there are challenges — system updates, growing pains, and learning curves — but with patience and effort, everything falls into place.

There is so much opportunity here for anyone willing to put in the work. I’d recommend MB Country Living to anyone who’s looking to grow their career in a supportive, fast-paced, and people-focused environment



I regret to say that my experience with management at MB  has been highly disappointing. The leadership lacks clear communication, accountability, and respect for employees. Key concerns include:
	1.	Poor Communication: Expectations are often unclear, and important updates or changes are communicated late, leading to confusion and unnecessary stress among staff.
	2.	Micromanagement: There is a pervasive lack of trust in employees’ capabilities, with constant oversight and interference that stifles creativity and autonomy.
	3.	Lack of Employee Support: Management appears indifferent to employee well-being, with little regard for work-life balance or addressing legitimate concerns raised by the team.
	4.	Favoritism: Decision-making often seems biased, with certain employees receiving preferential treatment regardless of performance or contribution.
	5.	Toxic Culture: There is a noticeable tolerance for unprofessional behavior, creating a toxic work environment where employees feel undervalued and disrespected.

Overall, the poor management has significantly impacted both morale and productivity. Unless there is a serious commitment to improving leadership practices and fostering a healthier work culture, I cannot recommend this organization to potential employees or collaborators.

I have been with MB Country Living for over 8 years, and every day I still feel proud to be part of this company. A typical day at work involves collaboration, problem solving, and supporting both our customers and each other, which makes the work meaningful and rewarding.
Over my time here, I’ve learned how important core values are not only in the workplace but also in everyday life. I’ve grown as a leader, as a teammate, and as a person thanks to the opportunities and challenges that MB has provided me.
Management is supportive and motivating, creating an environment where people feel valued and heard. The workplace culture is one of respect, teamwork, and positivity—we truly work together as a unit.
The hardest part of the job is that it can be fast-paced and requires adaptability, but this challenge is also what pushes us to grow. The most enjoyable part is the people I work with. The team is outstanding and supportive, and together we accomplish great things.

A good place for a high-school student to get some experience to move on to a serious work place. Not for an individual that is in need of a living wage. There is no growth within the company as they can't seem to keep staff long enough-high turn over rate. Manger didn't take part in training new hires. 
Training videos were sent before first shift. Was expected by manger they were finished before first shift. Did not receive payment for my training i did at home. Training in fact is very minimal, it is expected of the employees to research projects for proper sale on there personal time without pay. Manger will not communicate schedule changes. Manger will ignore your unavailability. 
You are constantly scheduled alone unable to take proper bathroom and eating breaks. This is very important in the summer as the store, including feed trailers aren't properly vented. You will be signed out by the manger for your break even if you are unable to take it. Manger allows customers to walk around back rooms and feed trailers unsupervised, which is dangerous for the customer. 

Oh my, where do I begin? 
Company is entirely unorganized and upper management and HR are absolute tyrants. 
They said in my interview that my mileage for driving between stores would be paid for, but the fine print says only if you drive over 100km daily which is impossible. They don’t send anyone out to stores if they know they’ll have to pay them for mileage. I drive 90km when they send me away. Even though they sent me away to far locations, they had someone else (who was perfectly capable of going to that location) come to my store and cover my shift there. What’s the point of that? 
The communication is non existent and if you think they’re your friends or care about you, you are sadly mistaken. The only people you can trust in this company are the other part timers who also have to go through the same unfair treatment. Even the managers are under constant stress and crying, so you don’t want to be there either. Unless you’re upper management or work at Head Office, don’t expect fair treatment, pay, labour expectations or anything for that matter. 


Love the customers, the products and what the company stands for and day to day work is enjoyable. However, good employees are taken advantage of by upper management and underpaid. Dangled “living wages” to employees only for it to never be brought up again. No real HR department or process for addressing concerns. HR rep has no training or HR background. Stores rarely receive positive feedback. No yearly raises or reviews. Expects people to travel to different stores and no coverage of travel costs. Sneaky contract changes. Uses good people until they have questions or concerns then takes them off the schedule with no warning. Retaliation if not liked by senior management- no coaching or documented conversations. Head office and senior mgmt do not care about employee wellbeing.  All policies are grey areas depending on who you ask. Pay is not worth the job when you give it your all and it’s sad. 

It seems like there are people with motives to let you succeed or fail based on how well you fit into the groups already established. 

Store Managers are not in charge of the outcome of their staff. Upper management seems to be micromanaging everything to the point of failure. Can't run a store if you are not allowed to make basic decisions. 

Staff are set in their ways and if asked or told to do things they do not like then they will skip store level managers and cry to upper management. 

Company has "core values" that they don't even follow. Going to the right person doesn't mean going to the person that gives you exactly what you want.... well I guess it does in this company. 

Training was unorganized and basically thrown to your own devices while trying to grasp the complex and unforgiving computer system that is used. 

This company has so much potential to be very successful but it suffers from terrible management and is run by people who  have no idea what they are doing. The trainers and the training program are terrible which makes it almost impossible to learn what is needed to do the job successfully. The store managers are great but are treated like garbage which leads to a lot of unhappy employees and high turnover. The only way to get ahead in this company is to be friends with the GM and the owner and go to their church. Overall it is a toxic environment and I would recommend that anyone think twice about working here.

Working at MB has been incredibly rewarding, you are seen as a person rather than a number or statistic. If you are willing to put the work in, the sky’s the limit in terms of growth. The camaraderie between locations is bar none, and helps keep morale high.  If you are a good multitasker, enjoy talking to people & can follow through on tasks then this is a great company to work for!
