MCL Power Inc

I started with MCL when I became a 3rd year and I can honestly say without a doubt that MCL was my favourite company I've worked for throughout my apprenticeship. I was genuinely excited to go to work everyday and see the progress we made as a team to get the job done. The expectations placed upon their employees were fair and realistic. Some perceived  the daily progress reports to be completed were injust and unfair- I however took it as a challenge to beat the goals and do it better than the day before which made the job exciting and kept me going throughout the day. The foreman were knowledgeable and helpful, you were never thrown into a task without proper instruction or lack of materials. The rest of the coworkers were fun to work with, we offered eachother constructive criticism and help to get the jobs done. MCL is where I flourished as an electrician. They are inclusive regardless of age or gender, and everyone was treated with the same amount of respect. If there was ever an issue or if you needed to be challenged more - the foremen were always there to help and willingly deligate tasks with more responsibility providing you can prove yourself. Safety was of utmost importance with weekly safety meetings, proper PPE provided, and PSI's completed before any task commenced. They showed their appreciation to their workers with quarterly pizza lunches, yearly safety awards, Christmas parties, and most foremen verbalized their appreciation with a job well done.

With any job in construction- lay offs are inevitable when things get slow which ended my relationship with MCL as a 4th year, but it will never deter me from applying in the future as this company has left such a positive impression on me.

 It is a go go go! environment and there is always something to do or learn. people get swapped around so they don't get pigeon hold in a specific job, so learning experiences are plenty.

working on buildings from the ground up, maintenance contracts or even building additions you always have the chance to do something new as well as make some new networking contacts. 

the hardest part of the job is obviously the physical aspect of our trade: stairs, EMT hauling, working around other trades and contractors.

the two negative things i would have to say about MCL Power Inc is material requisitions; be sure to know what you need before you actually need it as they will either come late or not come at all.  The second point is, if you hear of eventual layoffs or are heading to school work on your resume.

A typical day at work began at 7:30 in the morning, where I began solving customer, and supplier related concerns. Most of my day consisted of constant contact with electrical suppliers in regards to any and all electrical material purchased, as well as the tracking, and maintenance of purchase orders, invoices, and shipping deliveries to both the main office, and work sites throughout the city.
The hardest part of the job was keeping track of material that may have been lost, or delivered in error, reconciling some of these errors could be challenging at times, and posed problems from time to time in regards to accounts payable, 
The most enjoyable part of my job at MCL Power Inc. was working closely with all of the people, both office staff, and field staff alike. It was a warm and caring environment, and I would welcome the opportunity to be a part of the MCL Power team again in the future.

From the first day to the last day, there was structure and a plan. The management team was very friendly towards me, and I would never hesitate to ask any form of question.

The head foreman was always busy, yet still managed to answer my questions quickly and effectively. I felt like a person, not a number.

All of the sub foreman's I worked for were very articulate and understanding of what needed to be done. Somedays were more stressful then others, but thats to be expected in a fast paced atmosphere.

Working with MCL helped me learn how to manage big scale tasks, and gave me my first look at Apprentice Development. 

The hardest part of the job would have been all the stairs that had to be climbed for the first few months. However, once I got transferred to the main floor, my stair problem had disappeared!  

Its unfortunate that I am unable to return to their company, but I would surely return if the opportunity was possible.

I worked at MCL for 1 year of my apprenticeship. All together It was a good place to work, and a good environment to learn. Typical electrical job. They'll hire a bunch of people on for a job, and try to keep as many people as they can for the next one. I worked 2 projects with them and sometimes you get really good co-workers, and some bad ones.

One big downside I found was you had to fill out production sheets every day, which probably lead to co-workers taking nearby peoples materials. 
I would come back from coffee break sometimes and half my material for the job would be gone. Happened on both of the projects I worked.
Also probably lead to a lot of slapped together work that looked good on paper, but would usually have to spend more time fixing later on in the project.

Other than that, It was a good place to work most of the time.

Extremely fast paced and high stress company with piece-meal style progress reports every day detailing how many devices were installed, or feet of wire pulled, or pipes ran etc. Contract lists a year probation instead of the standard three months which they use to fire/hire at an extremely rapid pace. Very high staff turnover other than management who have worked in the same position for 10-20 years. No room for advancement and they burn out their staff. Schedules unexpectedly switch from days to nights, or 5-2 to 6-1 and refusal is grounds for termination.

Obviously this is my experience. As an apprentice I was given opportunity to learn a lot on the sites I was on. When I messed up I was told when I did something Good I was complimented. We had a staff appreciation lunch every 2-3 months. The benefits program was fantastic. Obviously different days sites were more stressful than others

Safety is a high priority for this company.

When a day off was needed It was given (within reason). I would recommend this company to anybody.

MCL was hands down the best company I have worked for. Would go back any day. Got great experience, I showed I could work hard and do good work so I was kept around  for a bit. All of the foreman i had were really great people and showed appreciation for hard work. But unfortunately as with any company layoffs are an issue. Can be cliquey, hopefully you make good friends with the foreman so they keep you around over other people when layoffs do come. 

MCL was a great place to work. fellow workers were motivating and respectful. I was never afraid to ask anyone how to do something and was always treated as an equal. They provide a great benefits package and competitive wages. They care about the safety and well-being of their workers. If it wasn't for the unforeseen scheduling conflicts which resulted in a high number of layoffs, i would gladly still be working there today, and if they asked me to come back, I would do so joyfully.

I started my apprenticeship with MCL and left as a 2nd year. During my first year I was able to experience many different things but to the point that the knowledge and skills I gained felt shallow. Work is very fast-paced and stressing over productivity numbers often overshadows learning and skill development. Worked alone more often than not almost as soon as I started.
