Malvern Family Resource Centre

As a Program Coordinator at Malvern Family Resource Centre (MFRC) I was responsible to work with youth of the community to keep them focused on making themselves strong individuals and supporting them throughout their high school experience. I focused on building self value and confidence. As a young teen-stress of school, parents and wonders of the future can be overwhelming. MFRC provides support and tools to help you accomplish goals and be present in their community.

The team of social workers, volunteers and supporters are all very delightful and optimistic about the community and its youth. Working with all these individuals taught me how to turn all events into positive ones. MFRC showed me how to make "something out of nothing"; funds are not always available to the resource centre to provide high end programs. But the community and support workers work with what they have to make the best programs and fun filled events for their teens as possible.

The hardest part of my job was being accepted by the youth. At first they were very closed off and to their selves, but after conversations and always being present they became to ease up and let me be apart of their family.

The most enjoyable part of this job was seeing the smile of many of the teens faces to know that there are individuals who support them and their dreams and a community who cares to see them grow and do well.

I've had the pleasure of working at Malvern Family Resource Centre for several years, and it’s truly a fun and fulfilling place to work. The team culture is one of the strongest aspects — everyone is passionate, supportive, and genuinely cares about the community and each other.

The organization offers good benefits, including RRSP matching and access to grants for personal and professional development, which is a big plus. Over the last few years, MFRC has grown significantly under the leadership of a new upper management team, and it's been exciting to witness the positive changes and the direction the agency is heading in.

There is also a strong emphasis on work-life balance, especially within the management team, with flexibility and support when needed.

That said, there are a couple of areas where improvement is still needed. Hybrid work options are mostly limited to the management team, and expanding that flexibility to more roles would be a great step forward. Compensation is fair for the sector but does fall slightly below industry averages for similar roles.

Overall, MFRC is a meaningful and engaging place to work, with great people and a strong sense of community impact. It’s a great fit for those passionate about making a difference while growing within a supportive environment.

Mfrc did not value me as a worker, and did not pay mey worth, nor do i beleieve they ever planned on doing so regardless of what the new management pretends. The new ED was working on fair wages for the whole company but still underpaid my role significantly even after comparing to similar other roles in NFP. When i asked why I coukd not be compensated fairly they stated they didnt have the budget for it that year... even though the ED is on the sunshine list and makes 6 figures... and they posted my replacement job posting (3 months later) with the raise I had asked for included in the posted salary. Pretending to care about employees then not actually caring feels alot worse than when the old ED was about upfront about not really caring..... 

My typical day starts with making calls to the clients at Malvern letting them know of the upcoming programs and workshops. 
Some days I would have appointments with clients where they would need help with finding information on the resources available to the them in the community according to what their requirements are. I would also have clients who would need help with filling up of forms for the subsidised housing application. I never had a tough time as i was always guided and helped by other staff members if ever needed.
Somedays I would also help with the computer classes and would also facilitate the conversation cafe.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Not enough resources to work with  in serving  the community around. Needed more funding

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Friendly and accommodating. The surrounding communitynis mixed cultures and they served.and recognised all
 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Meeting new people.and more esp new immigrants who needed support and referal to services

My job with this organization entailed answering the phones,taking messages for staff, attending to visitors and handing out brochures of the organization to those who needed or asked for them. The staff were very nice,  helpful and friendly. The phone rang constantly, as parents and clients had a lot of inquiries about their children.

At Malvern Family Resource Centre, I was a Youth Volunteer, where I would volunteer for various activities that had occur in the Malvern Community. We had weekly meeting in which we planned the upcoming events. Example of some of the events would be Malvern Sports Rush, Halloween Haunted House, Car Wash's, these events helped the community interact more, gave the community a reason to come out and have fun, which was the most enjoyable part of the job !

Upper management was disorganized and terrible

Stressful, unsupportive, poor 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Unknown unfortunately, never know what you're walking in to or when you will be able to go home

Management issues make it more difficult for workers, pay is mediocre. The work environment flip-flopped from great to bad, sometimes supervisors were fantastic, very understanding and kind but sometimes they would expect the most, beyond what the role entailed. A lot of issues would be solved if they appropriately compensated staff for the roles they did, and had better management/more managerial staff. 

On a typical day I would provide children with snack, mini activities, homework help and a big game or free time near the end of program. I learned how to cope with different kinds of children behavioral issues and how to communicate better with the children and my co-workers. My communication skills improved greatly and so did my time management skills.
