Maple Leaf

In my two and half years at Maple leaf pork I had a lot of ups and downs working on the cut floor. Starting out my body took maybe four months to get use to working in fast paced environment turns out i was given one of the harder starting positions. My hands would swell up pretty bad and often times be cold from handling partially frozen meat. It got better as time went on and ten months in i was able to work/train new hires on all of the starting positions available while working my way to a higher paying position. Typical day started at 6 am and went until 2:30 pm you would go to your work station and start prepping what ever you need for the day. Often times there would be an hour to hour and half overtime due to people not showing up or something went wrong with machines. The hardest part of the job for me was doing the same thing every day and doing it while in pain. I want to say all of the different jobs are just repeating the same task over and over again like any regular production line it can get very boring. If you are lucky you will land a position with 3-4 other people and hopefully get along with each other and it will make the days a lot more manageable. Depending on the spot you get the work culture will change there are jobs that aren't as fast and you can take your time and then there are spots that require you to be fast and maintain speed until brake time. The people i met while working the slower jobs were pretty laid back and often wanted to talk more due less stressful job.The people on the higher paying/faster positions didn't talk as much unless they have been there for a while and the job was second nature. For the most part everyone I worked with and met were nice and helpful even when I first started out but I think that was due to me being a hard worker and focused on getting my work done while having a sense of humor. The people that complained to much or didn't pull their weight were generally looked down on and definitely treated different by some people. Management was ok for the most part they definitely did try and make an effort to help with any issues you were having. They showed a lack of conflict resolution in most of the dealing i had with them how ever. The most enjoyable part of the job for me was interacting with a wide verity of people,the benefits plan is pretty good, and getting off at 2:30 pm gave you time to make appointments. If you are a hard worker and don't mind doing the same task over and over again this job provides and steady income and room to work your way up.

Where do I even begin? Pay sucks for new employees, that’s all there is to it. Work is repetitive and painful, and management makes you feel ashamed for asking to be moved if you’re too sore on your current job, and god forbid you actually need time off for an injury because the incident report process is gruelling, shameful, and they make you feel guilty for having to do it. Oh and they’ll absolutely try their hardest to blame it on YOU so they can keep a clear conscience. Management are rude and disrespectful and flat out don’t care if you’re unable to perform a task. Nobody who makes the decisions (about footwear, working techniques and expectations, etc) understands even an inkling of what it’s like to work on the floor and how hard it is on the body and mind to do that kind of work in those conditions for 40 hours a week. If they just happen to pass by when you’re not doing too great in that moment, you get yelled at and pressured to work harder and they won’t listen to any excuses.  Management doesn’t care whatsoever about anything the union has to say, IF they actually say anything in the first place. Working conditions are horrid: it’s freezing cold, wet, and the company provided required footwear is like torture on the feet. Overtime is a rarity, but if you don’t do enough you’ll eventually get forced and they don’t care if you can’t do it when they tell you to. They’ll shift around your schedule and hours at their leisure and they DO NOT CARE if it doesn’t work for you. Most of the workers don’t understand anything that’s said to them and won’t listen anyway; the work culture is toxic and reminds me of high school cliques with gossiping and talking behind people’s backs. People are lazy and expect others to pick up their slack. Those who have been there longer than you won’t listen to you, even if what you’re saying is correct (eg. about GMPs) because they have more seniority and are therefore always right. Seniority gets to people’s heads and the “blue hats” (employees still on probation) get treated like garbage until they’re out of probation (white hat); it seems the seniority system also applies to making mistakes on the job, as employees with more seniority are handled with more leniency than someone who hasn’t been there as long, even if they make the same mistakes. Overall, it’s a toxic environment to work in, from coworkers to management and corporate to HR, and your body will never fully recover from the damage that’s done to it while working here.

Pros – **The Associates- From Lead Hands, Machine Operators,Semi Skilled Labour, Mechanics, Sanitation department it is all of you that drives this company and with out your hard work and co-operation their would be no MLCF. Great bunch to work with!

**Experience-If your fresh out of university or college it is a good place to get your feet wet. Literally.

Cons – **Top heavy on the operations management side-Senior Production Supervisor role is a NON value added position and only limits the channel of communication between Production Supervisors and Production Managers

**Lacks training and development of Leadership team- Internal training and professional development programs are non existent on off shifts and slim to none on preferred shifts.

**Talent Retention-This company and this location specifically struggles to retain top talent and young talent. The Veteran leaders who poured the foundation of the plant stick around for ever with the stone age mentality of operations management. This creates a road block for the young leaders who waste away on off shifts and ultimately leave. There is no succession planning.

**Work Life Balance-Be prepared to work night shift or evening shift for min. of 7-10 years before you even get a shot at working regular day shift hours.

**Environment-Cold and Damp.

Advice to Senior Management – **Eliminate the Senior Production Supervisor role as it would force Production Managers and Manufacturing Managers to bridge the gap between them and the Production Supervisors. Too much information gets lost due to going through too many channels of distribution.

**Re-instate SLP program or offer some sort of post secondary program hosted by the company to further those leaders who want to gain more knowledge in engineering, business etc.

**Get on the bandwagon of succession planing with your younger Production Supervisors who have 30+ more years of service ahead of them to contribute to this company. It does not benifit the company to have a revolving door and high turnover of young leaders while the relics ride out their time.

I worked days, varying hours each day depending upon employee needs at the time.  I would start my day checking my phone messages and emails for any high priority items that I would need to deal with that day.  Following this, I would go out into the production areas to attend production meetings and meet with any employees requiring follow up due to illness, injury etc.  This could be anywhere from 1-25 employees per department that would need to see me.  I would return to my office and begin following up with employees on short term, long term, or WCB disability.  Follow up included ensuring I had proper medical documentation to substantiate their time off, obtaining updates on their condition and following up with their health care providers as needed.  Throughout the day, I was often called back out to production areas if any medical emergencies occurred or any accidents that needed to be investigated as well as having employees stop in for BP or Glucose testing. I was part of committees such as a smoking cessation committee, musculoskeletal injury committee, etc. I would also attend multidisciplinary team meetings, employee disciplinary and union meetings etc.

My manager and coworkers were awesome! We had a great team and worked very well together.  It was like a work family!

The hardest part of my job was dealing with difficult employees.  We often had employees with poor work ethic that would drag their heels  a bit when it came to coming back to work.  It was occasionally a struggle to reason with these employees but for the most part, I would be successful in getting these people back to work.

Every aspect of my job was enjoyable.  It would be very hard to pick just one thing that I enjoyed the most.

This is a very poor job choice. I've been working with maple leaf for just over three months and honestly this is one of the most disorganized, and poorly managed work environments I've ever had the displeasure of joining. When I was hired I was promised a dream job, with chances of advancement however there was no such thing. The job I was hired to take (and was more than overqualified for) became a seniority squabble, never saw the position, have repeatedly tried to get into the post but constant stonewalling. The employees are lazy and half present, they walk in front, behind,and around your forklift no matter how many times you sound the horn which is not only stressful but poses obvious safety hazzards. Management is incompetent and constantly lies to you, I got hired as many employees were leaving for obvious reasons, but I brushed these naysayers off as disgruntled employees. I was made to work which is granted, it's a job right? My work was never good enough and I barely had any time to relax. They love their lazy people though, as the person I trained to replace me legitimately sleeps on the job right in the open, and treats everyone like a slave, and nobody not even the supervisor does a thing about it hence the terrible leadership. If you work hard they will abuse it. Summer job, don't waste more time than that. I regret staying past the first month as I had prior job offerings that would have ended up being more worthwhile, but live and learn. Hoping to help make an informed decision for a like-minded individual.

Menagment are over all very nice, but coworkers and supervisors are non that good.
First forget about your " good manners" before entering the plant, coworker are extremely rude, loud, bossy and bully, but very unaware of they worker rights, safety, health insurance etc....

They mostly speak theyre own languages and get mad when you dont understand what they are saying to you.

Dont expect ANY " please and or thank you"!!!

You will hear about 10k time " oh my God oh my God" they literally use it for ANY minimal mistakes  that temporay and new worker make.

Positions rotations are not respected at all!! And when u complain about it you will be verbally attacked.

Too much " sexual allusions and nasty talking" for my taste.....I was very surprised that women were the one acting nasty with the male cooworkers.

The supervisor would increase the line speed so much, that i would feel nauseous and deezy sometimes.

 They would decrease the temperature soo low that i got brain freez  a couple of time, that is insaine to me.

I feel like there is a GOOD reason if 90% of the line worker are mostly immigrants and new comers.

Its a good short term, or temporary job, but after few moths of it you will start to have some bad symptoms like back pain, shoulders pain, neck pain, legs pain, dry eyes etc....

I did non appreciate the fact that they dont give you ANY work training...since the firsth day you will find your self be guided wrongly by other co-worker , and i found it very unprofessional that they allowed you to work on some machines like multivac WITHOUT training.

Maple Leaf is a company run by its Marketing department, which "owns" the P&L, but execution of the strategy is done by the Sales team. This leads to aggressive positioning (finger pointing, etc) between Marketing and Sales that is often difficult to resolve.

A typical day at work as a Business Development Manager includes 3 to 4 hours of internal meetings, between 50 and 100 emails (most of them internal), and a couple of phone calls and emails to the customer. The largest share of the workload is to manage internal relationships, not to work with the customer. Work / life balance is not taken seriously.

The most valuable lessons I learned during my time at Maple Leaf were about the dangers of overspecialization and politics. Maple Leaf has very tightly determined roles, is heavily "siloed", and doesn't often welcome cross-functional expertise that challenges the status quo. In addition, Maple Leaf is run on internal relationships, making it very difficult to achieve meaningful change.

Individuals who are seeking well compensated specialized work will probably enjoy Maple Leaf. Those who are hoping to contribute on a cross-functional level would, in my opinion, be better served by pursuing a Tier 2 or Tier 3 employer instead of Maple Leaf. Those preferring a "Category Management" approach to Sales will probably not be comfortable at Maple Leaf. Relationships continue to run the business and fact-based selling is a distant second.

Maple leaf has now closed down.  At the time my day consisted of doing very light physical labour at an extremely fast pace.  I worked on multiple jobs including shipping, palletizing, packaging and operating forklifts.  Everything was very repetitive and the overtime was minimal.  

Management was not as involved at maple leaf.  They dealt with employees very professionally and with respect.  Often they would watch from a distance or stop by periodically to see how thing's are running.  It kept the atmosphere inside Maple Leaf relaxed and enjoyable.

At maple leaf while working in palletizing where i spent most of my years, you depend on other employees because sometimes 1 mans job can get overwhelming due to the speed so help is needed.  In return you do the same when you witness someone else struggling to keep up.  Not everyone has this quality and it brings departments closer together as a unit.  

The high repetitions and constant standing was a bit tough to get used to.  The job's performed were a bit mind numbing and not mentally challenging because there was no problem solving or planning.

Definately the most enjoyable part of the job was the employees.  Maybe 1 out of 20 ever came to work in a bad mood or had a negative effect on other employees.  Although the plant was 1000+ employees the bond between departments had a comforting feeling.

I worked as a plumber/gas fitter in the maintenance department. A typical day would be waiting for the supervisor to print out work order to fix a leak, unplug a drain, or trouble shoot a piece of equipment. There was lots of down time when no equipment was down or other issues, but things can and did break very often.

Management is a disaster, supervisors did not communicate well with each other between shifts. Lots of times they did not even know who was on vacation, what work was needed to be done or what parts were ordered. There was little to no planning for jobs, lots of times no parts were ordered or the wrong parts were brought in so jobs were continuously being half assed with what was available. 

If you apply for a day shift position they will not tell you that the position is actually filled through seniority. You will think you have been offered the Mon-Fri shift only to find out they are putting you on straight night shift, or weekend shift. BEWARE OF THIS!

The workplace culture is a game of hide and seek. Most employees are not great trades people and hardly know enough to pass their trades exam. Its everyone for themselves. The supervisors know who works hard and will load those employees up with work, while the lazy employees are left to hide and look at their phones. No incentive to work hard, or do a good job. Most work is done in a hurried half assed way.

The pay is great for what is required, the benefits are not so great and usually a complete hassle to get dental, medical, or prescriptions filled.

Was always hectic with broken down machinery in a cold and wet environment. Everything was always a 911 emergency and had to be fixed right away. The place was disorganized and never enough parts, resources or training. Radio etiquette of managers was rude.

When I was hired they told me I was going into a high performance workforce and all that jazz but that was not the case. I felt that I had to prove myself everyday if you wanted to keep your job rather than focusing on doing your job correctly. If something went wrong you needed to show you were on top of everything at all times and it was the other guys fault. If you Live, Eat and Breath Maple Leaf Foods and throw all your coworkers under the bus to make your self look better then you may get that promotion.They will push and push and when you start to burn out they will chew you up and spit you out.

the plant was designed for product flow and food safety, it was not designed for maintenance. if you will be working there for maintenance you will probably get lost in what's called "the interstitial" which is a second floor with all the equipment that doesn't need to be sanitized everyday.
