There are SOME good things about working at Market Fresh - coworkers are great, the store is not open very late so you don't have to work late, I think it's an okay job for students if you don't care about the quality of your work environment. That being said, the workplace culture at Market Fresh is extremely negative. The staff turnover rate is very high and management/owners do not seem to realize that it is their behaviour that is making the environment toxic. Not all, but many of the managers I interacted with had a "this isn't my concern" attitude and would pass off responsibility/blame to minimum wage employees whenever possible. Owners are unfriendly, do not greet you when they come in, immediately look for something that you've done wrong, and embarrass you in front of other employees/customers by calling you out on some unnecessary detail. Employees are encouraged to look out for "sketchy" customers which usually involves profiling people who don't look like the typical "upper-class" customer and management are constantly following these people around to try and catch them stealing. Management are unprofessional and talk about employees behind their backs to other employees. Don't even think about calling in sick - your manager will assume you are lying and tell other managers/coworkers that you are lying. Myself and other coworkers were discouraged from calling in sick during a PANDEMIC. HR rep does not respond to employee concerns. Schedule is never posted more than a couple days in advance, which I feel like could be changed to allow for better work/life balance. So much wrong with this place.

In the almost two years I’ve been working at MF, I have worked in a few positions within the store & experienced many positive interactions with management as well as the customer base. It is a perfect job for anyone looking to get into retail, they really do treat staff like family. As any job, you get out of it what you put in! The store owners are very friendly and take the time to introduce themselves upon hiring, and do their best to remember everyone’s names, considering they have a relatively large staffing roster as they have many departments despite its size. I am always greeted with a smile by my superiors as well as other coworkers. Shopping here prior to working provided me with the insight of how I would be treated as an employee. They go above and beyond to carry local products and work with their staff to make sure they’re feeling comfortable within their position, adequately trained and also encourage their other endeavours such as school and family outside of the workplace. If you asked to be cross trained in multiple departments they will gladly work with you. I myself was sick during this pandemic (non-covid related) and they ensured I had fresh groceries and checked in regularly. Another thing during this COVID-19 pandemic is they have amply stepped up to keep our customers and other staff safe as can be by constantly implementing and adapting safety measures. Market Fresh is and rightfully so, a community staple and they work hard to maintain that positive image.  

Are you looking to be underpaid and overworked? Looking to work in a small space with next to no cleanliness? Long hard hours and no appreciation? Well then definitely apply to Market Fresh (there’s a good chance they’ll hire you, they’re desperate considering their turnover rate) 
Where do I start, management is clueless, it seems like the owners hired the dumbest and laziest people they could find when it came to management. They’re rude, high and mighty because of their position (you’re a middle aged person working at a grocery store just chill out) they’re basically just not helpful in anyway and really serve no purpose. 
The turnover rate is insane, due to this you will have to pick up the workload of 5 people in every department you can think of, while only making minimum wage. 
It’s a cramped and dirty work place. Mould, flys, rotting food, need I say more? 
In the summer it can get up to 45 degrees Celsius’s in the back at market fresh, instead of offering us relief from the extreme heat we’re worked harder, with no air flow, a closed back door so no breeze is able to come through, vents that don’t work, we’re encouraged to come in full uniform: which means wearing your thick cotton cap and apron and heavy work shoes.

Find a job anywhere else because this place will ruin you.

I would not recommend working here if you can, management has expectations far above what are realistic, both for the pay offered and for the systemic constraints of the work environment such as physical space, quality of tools and equipment, and staffing. Any failure to meet production goals are treated as personal failures of the employee, with no solutions implemented other than being told to work faster.  Micromanagement is extremely common, their turnover rate is about as high as their expectations, and they seem to be perpetually understaffed. There is what I'll describe as a palpable air of wealth inequality between most of their staff and upper-management, they pay most of their staff minimum or student minimum with very little upward mobility over time while also expecting you to do the work of multiple people. The distaste for upper management is an open secret and frequent topic of discussion.
Most of the people that work there are kind, fun people to be around and mutually complain with, frankly they were the silver lining of working there at all and i sincerely hope they form a union. 

Market Fresh was a fast-paced work environment that required constant multi-tasking and customer service interaction.  I worked at the Gourmet 2 Go hot counter where we served hot-prepared meals made by the kitchen, alongside a fully operational pizza oven that we used to make artisanal pizzas, a fully operational cafe bar, and other food preparation areas, all of which I was trained to use with maximum efficiency.  I hand stretched pizzas, made cafe drinks (including lattes, cappuccinos, etc.), built artisan sandwiches, and prepped food items (for both the kitchen and the G2G areas).   On top of those duties I was also in charge of cleaning all surfaces and machines, stocking all food and equipment shelves, aiding the kitchen and front-end staff, and interacting with and helping customers.  The work environment was very fast paced and demanding, though I found the experience enjoyable as it always kept me busy and on my toes.  There was never a dull moment while working and it was great getting to work with a motivated and up-beat team.

Hands down the worst job I have ever had. You may enjoy the job for the first month or so but after a while you will notice that micro managing is very real at this establishment. As well as the high turn over rate begins to make a lot more sense. 
The management team is very toxic and it seems obvious that they have encouraged current employees to write positive reviews about the work environment. 

-They claim that the food is fresh, but most things come frozen including most bakery items. 
-The discount is only 10% and is not for every item in store. 
-They do a lot of management meetings as well as outings while the rest of the staff picks up the slack. 
-lack of respect from management towards employees.
-No room for growth.
-Encouraged to look for those who don’t seem to be “upper-class” and to watch them for shoplifting. 
-Managers will think you are lying when you call in sick.
-Managers talk behind each employees back. 

If you really need a job it’s best to work here part time and not full time. 

This was a decent job during school and afterwards while I was trying to find something in my field. 
The owners and management try to give the customer the best experience possible, and in doing so leads to a last minute stressful scramble. Some managers clearly have their job because they’ve worked there forever, not necessarily because they’re the best person for the job. But this has been true of all the companies i’ve worked for, not just Market Fresh.
Overall a good place to work. Pay was more than I could get elsewhere, got a discount on my groceries and took advantage of the benefit program.
I see a lot of complaints in some of the reviews which surprised me. In my experience if you show up for your shift on time, dress appropriately and just do your job and not screw around there’s no problems.
Coworkers here are the best.

If it werent for the people I worked with I would have put my time at Market Fresh at 1 star. 

I worked at Market Fresh for about a year and there were many, many issues with this job, the most prevalent being the lack of respect and inappropriate behaviour from management. 

Extremely high turnover, at one point was the longest working person in my department. The people that do stay here are extremely hard working and put up with a lot of unprofessional and unpleasant behaviour. 

This leads to it being an uncomfortable environment to be trained in, or to work permanently. 

With the minimum wage hike, hours and labour were cut drastically creating numerous issues and stresses on staff. As well as bonuses/ promotions being revoked. 

Overall the job was not great, and was not worth the trouble. Loved my coworkers but wouldn’t recommend this job to anyone.

I had a really tough time working here. The culture is strange; everyone acts super happy and peppy while they're obviously stressed out of their minds. The training wasn't great, I'd often feel like I was in the way of more experienced employees who would rather complete tasks themselves than help you learn the ropes. The HR department was super friendly but the management always scared the living heck out of me. They expect you to force a smile for the entirety of your shift. Hours weren't great either. And before leaving for one of your shift you had to let a manager look in your bag for suspected shoplifting! That was pretty insane. 

Overall, Market Fresh wasn't all bad, I mostly liked my department manager and the food was great, but I can't see myself ever recommending it as a place to work for a friend. I quit after a few weeks.

What to say about Market Fresh,
They tell you what to wear right down to your socks, they will fire you if you don't fit their bubble, look the part. 
They will promise you the world and do not follow through. No raises but they will give you employee of the month so you don't quit. Don't bother making friends at work and think you can do so out side of the market fresh walls. Mangers aren't allowed to hang out with the common worker. 
If they like you, you will no. If they don't you get made into an example and are constantly getting into trouble.
The only thing that makes going to work every shift doable is a ray of sunshine that works in the butcher shop. She is always smiling and willing to make others feel happy. 
Benefits are terrible 
And nothing is fresh! Kitchen uses week old meat and produce. 
Marketfresh is for right now not for ever
