Great company, Management are always there to support staff with diversity, culture and inclusion programming for the youth. The recent "Global garbage" paints a one sided negative picture for sensationalism and trash news. The employees interviewed were those who should not be in the youth care field, probably the staff youth were talking about and who were just as poor at their job as the Global news reporters. 
The company always encourages staff improvement and supplies the tools needed for growth and development within the industry, Management is approachable and fair with staff concerns or suggestions. The company works hard to raise the bar on youth care, those who cant cut it, run to Global News.
The youth are first with up to date communication on, Indigenous,  LGBTQ, Cultural, Diversity programming. Many community resources are used to enhance the daily lives of each resident. The company takes pride in supplying incentives for the staff , employee of the month ( paid day off) constant recognition for a job well done, team building, bowling,  karaoke nights, golf. escape room, are a few of the activities for staff. There is an employee liaison for staff to bring concerns when needing clarifications.  At the end of the day, there is always room to improve, people can either whine about it or do something about it through the outside whining, the company chooses to try to improve regardless of the negative paintbrush from those who cannot paint. I recommend working for the company, but come to work, not to get a free ride.         


A lot of the supervisors act like high school students.  They do not provide any relevant training on ground and new employees get ganged up on when they try to do what the seasoned employees are doing. They try to bully employees into not speaking out when another employee used too much force on a child. There is a hierarchy between full timers and part timers which is weird. It is basically belittling to be a part timer because you do the exact same work as a full timer and sometimes even more but your opinion is invalid. They also have no employee benefits for part timers despite it being a relatively dangerous job. My stress levels were really high working here

I worked at Mary Homes for almost 4 years. In that time I had to privilege to work with some really great kids as well as an awesome team of people who all care a lot about the youth, and making a difference in their lives one day at a time. I found management to be very approachable when support was needed. I really appreciated that they continue to invest in the teams by offering different trainings throughout employment in order to provide support to the clients. I was hired on as part time and then promoted to full time, so there is room for advancement and growth if your looking for a job with opportunities for those who work hard. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Most of the staff are good people. Haven't had a bad experience with anyone.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The clients can be particularly tough; additionally, part-time workers get no benefits and it can be harder to find hours during the school year.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Company has just voted to unionize (which upper management clearly did not want), so it is a little tense right now between staff and upper management.

Not all homes are like this but
- absolutely no programs for kids. They're at home playing video games, watching tv or crisising
- inconsistency within the team. Even full-timers
- 0 team support
- bad management and judgemental
- will fire you if you don't work around their schedule
- provides a schedule during the last week of the previously made schedule
- expects you to go above and beyond as a part-timer when you don't get any benefits
- overworked part-timers with full-time hours
- expects you to drive kids to places as if it isn't a privilege. guilts you when you can't.
- 0 COVID-19 precautions

Anything at anytime can happen. From violent outbursts, to emotional breakdowns, crisis is a big part of the job. Seeing the youth succeed is the main goal and you need to celebrat the little victories. Awesome staff over-all and management has the toughest job...balancing chaos

Hardest part is experiencing some of the atrocities that happen to our youth on a daily bases...everytime you think you've seen the worst case scenario, another one takes its place

The most enjoyable part also is knowing you've made a client feel safe and secure while they are staying at your facility

I work the overnights for Mary Homes and they are great! It's definitely not for everyone but if you love working the overnights then its amazing. Staff and management are fantastic. They are always there for you and don't mind making changes to fit your schedule and help you out. Training was super informative and made me feel like I was more than prepared to hit the floor. Overall if you enjoy child care this is one of the best organizations I've worked in, would definitely recommend! 

3 years and counting. You can learn as much as you give. You either want to do better as an employee and do better for the clients or just do the bare minimum, clock your hours and go home. I've met many motivated and inspiring people at the agency. Resilience is key. You need to be the change you want to see.

Do yourself a favour and never work for Mary Homes! They treat their employees badly, there is barely any programming for the youth, they essentially require you to have 24/7 availability or they will fire you, and they expect you to work the rest of your life around their schedule. They have a known reputation in Ottawa for being a bad home to work for.

Very Toxic, unreliable and depressing

It’s your there for the children it’s great but it’s the company as a whole is toxic
