The culture at Matix Lumber can be negative and draining. There is clear favoritism towards certain senior employees, whose opinions are often prioritized over others. This creates an environment where these individuals feel emboldened to spread misinformation or make accusations against other colleagues without facing accountability. As a result, employees often feel the need to defend themselves and are left walking on eggshells, dreading difficult conversations with management that can feel critical, demoralizing and accusatory.

The work itself is interesting and engaging, but the toxic culture of favoritism and lack of accountability overshadow these positives. Unfortunately, some employees face serious workplace challenges, including instances of bias, discrimination, and targeted behaviors that leave them feeling unsupported. These issues are usually not addressed effectively, particularly when they involve senior employees who are given leniency.

Certain members of management (not all) come across as disconnected from employee concerns. They rarely engage with staff in a meaningful way, and their communication can sometimes feel condescending or unprofessional. This creates a gap between leadership and employees, which contributes to a lack of trust and respect.

In some departments, leadership has reverted to outdated practices like excessive micromanagement. Employees are closely monitored, from time tracking to being required to copy supervisors on all correspondence. These practices, combined with a lack of positive feedback, contribute to feelings of low morale, lack of appreciation, lack of trust and an absence of purpose.

Matix Lumber has the potential to be a great place to work. The company has wonderful coworkers, a beautiful building, and interesting projects. However, leadership needs to address internal issues such as favoritism, employee engagement, and modernizing management practices. Resolving these problems could help retain the talented and passionate employees who work here and create a healthier workplace culture.


What is the best part of working at the company?
Matix Lumber is a well-diversified company with great people to work with. As a newcomer and fresh graduate in Canada with little background in wood construction, this place provided an incredible opportunity for me to grow. I was able to hone my skills, expand my construction knowledge, and gain real hands-on experience that I would not have learned anywhere else.

I started working during a very busy season, yet the team still made time to train me properly. I learned the principles of wood construction not just through manuals or instructions, but by working alongside people who genuinely know their craft. What I appreciate most about the culture here is the balance between independence and support, they let you figure things out on your own first, but you can always ask questions without hesitation. That level of openness is rare, and it makes learning so much easier.

Matix Lumber does not just build houses for communities; it builds opportunities for people like me to grow professionally while contributing to something meaningful. Being part of a company that helps families build their home, while also helping employees build their future, is something I truly value.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful part of working at Matix Lumber is the pace during peak seasons. The workload can increase quickly, and as a newcomer it can feel overwhelming at first, especially when you are still learning the fundamentals of wood construction. Starting during a busy period meant I had to adapt fast and pick things up quickly.

However, even though the pace can be intense, the team is supportive and always willing to help when you ask. The stress mostly comes from the volume of work and the speed required, not from the people or the culture. Once you get used to the workflow and understand the process, the pressure becomes much more manageable.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Working at Matix Lumber has been a great experience. The company has a strong focus on teamwork, safety and customer service and that really shows in the day-to-day environment. Management is supportive and approachable, and they take time to make sure employees have the tools and training needed to succeed. There's a good balance between independence and teamwork. Coworkers are friendly, knowledgeable and always willing to help out, which makes busy days enjoyable. I have developed new skills and learnt a few here and there with inventory management and helping customers.



What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful part at Matix Lumber is handling the rush during peak times. when orders stack up, pace gets fast and you have to stay organized to keep everything moving smoothly.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work experience at Matix Lumber is very team oriented with supportive coworkers and plenty of chances to learn, which is an experience I have had since being here.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day as Procore Support at Matix involves helping different departments with project updates, uploading drawings, fixing document issues, and keeping information organized in Procore. The pace can get busy, but you spend most of your day supporting project teams and making sure everything stays up to date.

My experience at Matrix has been genuinely positive. From the first day, the team welcomed me warmly and provided a well‑structured two‑week training program that helped me integrate quickly. I felt supported not only by my colleagues but also by senior leadership, whose guidance has been encouraging and consistent.

I was initially hired as a Site Supervisor, but within a few weeks the company recognized additional strengths in my profile and promoted me to Project Coordinator. This demonstrated to me that Matrix values talent, listens to its employees, and is willing to invest in their growth.

Like any organization, there is always room for improvement, but much of the company’s success depends on the professionalism and commitment of each team member. Overall, Matrix has offered me a positive environment, opportunities for development, and a strong sense of belonging. 

I worked in both the accounting and sales departments at Matix Lumber for just over a year, and my experience was nothing short of disappointing. The lack of leadership was the most glaring issue. In the accounting department, the CFO failed to provide any meaningful guidance or support, leaving the team to navigate tasks without direction. Although I was only in sales for about 3 months, the same can be said for the sales department, where leadership was also nonexistent.

The company is poorly run from the top down, and the CEO’s management style is dictatorial, creating an oppressive atmosphere where employees are afraid to speak up or share concerns. The work environment felt hostile, and employee morale was consistently low. It's no surprise that the turnover rate is so high; people leave because they simply can’t thrive in such a toxic workplace.

I would not recommend working here to anyone unless you're prepared to deal with constant stress and a lack of support from management. The company needs significant changes in leadership and culture before it can truly succeed. 

Keep looking, you deserve so much better than this place. 

This was the worst job I’ve had. In my experience, the work environment was harsh and overly controlled. I felt closely monitored, expectations shifted without warning, and minor mistakes were treated like major issues. That management style didn’t work for me.

Turnover on my immediate team felt high while I was there. We were frequently onboarding new people and redistributing work, which made the workload chaotic and deadlines stressful.

Advancement and day-to-day treatment felt uneven. In my view, personal relationships (nepotism) carry more weight than performance. That left me feeling stuck and undervalued.

The stress followed me home. I ended up seeking medical help for anxiety and realized after leaving how much the job had been affecting my life outside of work.

I wouldn’t return to this workplace. This is my personal experience and opinion based on the time I spent there.

Flexible hours, good benefits, reasonable pay. Many are pretty well left to self-train or ask for assistance from team members. CEO provides little to no direction to their direct team members and department managers. Expects new hires to anticipate their needs & shows dislike for providing support. Other executive level staff request urgent work to be completed at the drop of a hat, at the last possible minute. Have received and overheard beratings from CEO when their expectations are proven to be unrealistic or poorly communicated. Low tenure, high turnover in nearly all roles. CEO proven to be disrespectful to team members in many situations. The rest of the team is utterly outstanding! 

Matrix Lumber has been an amazing place to work. The team is vey welcoming and communicates clearly and opening. Each day brings new challenges, but the collaborative environment makes problem‑solving both efficient and enjoyable. The pace is fast, the expectations can be high, but the support from the team makes getting things done a lot easier and enjoyable. Highly recommended for those looking to grow in a dynamic and rewarding environment.

My experience with the company was mixed. In terms of stability, it wasn't ideal—there were frequent changes and a noticeable lack of clear direction. HR needs to improve a lot of things. Communication was another major challenge; it was often inconsistent or unclear, which left employees unsure of their responsibilities or what was happening within the organization. Overall, there was a general sense of uncertainty that made it difficult to feel confident in the day-to-day work.
