McDonalds

        A regular day at work starts at 5am, and ends at 1pm. Until 6am, most of your work is preparing and stocking every station to be ready for the first rush of the day, as well as take the occasional order here and there. From 6am-9am, we would expect around 120 orders/hour, and staying on top of orders and product is essential. From 9am until 11am, there is a lull, which is about half as busy as before, but in order to be ready for the lunch menu and rushes, we have the repeat the process of stocking and repreparing every station for the lunch rushes, as well as making sure everything is food safe for different products. From 11am- 12:30pm, we are at around 100 orders/hour, and after that, my job is to clean the outside lot, and the inside lobby; some people stay on their stations, some do other work, sometimes I stay later when it is still busy. 

        My job, for the most part, is taking orders and money through the drive through, which can sometimes be pretty hectic, especially when we are busy. I needed to learn to multitask, do basic math quickly, and work with the production and service teams in order to do my job properly. The most important things I have learned, however, have been communicating efficiently and properly, being a flexible worker, able to go from one job to the next, and working quickly. I cannot stress how important working quickly, but still well, is. McDonald's is strange in that it teaches you how to work very well, but does not give you any specific skills, aside from communication.

       Management has been hit and miss for me. I missed two wage reviews, due to management forgetting, and have not been compensated for the lack of pay that is included in my contract. I have been treated extremely disrespectfully by younger managers (younger meaning under 25). I have had no talk of advancement, despite working at the same location for 4 years (semi-full time for 2), and bringing it up several times. On many subjects, I have had different managers tell me completely different things about the same task/subject, only to find myself getting into (very minor) trouble the next day for doing it wrong. That being said, management is very fair about mistakes, and understands that growing and learning means messing up now and then. The hours are very good, and I can take any day off, as well as request pretty much any schedule I want, with a couple weeks notice. Most managers are very helpful and friendly, and know that even though we are just crew members, we are just as important as they are.

        McDonald's hires a very diverse set of workers; my youngest coworkers are 15, and my oldest are "up there." I cannot speak as a whole on everybody, as everyone's background is different, but most people start at 15-17 y/o, and are terrible at their jobs (I have to be honest), but within 3-6 months, become dependable, hard working employees that I'd trust any job there to. Obviously, there are exceptions, but employees generally only get decent hours there if they are good workers, so I don't see many slackers there anymore.

        The hardest part of the job is dealing with the customers. Everybody is different, and while most people are very nice, it can be frustrating to deal with people who do not know how to place an order, or are very quiet, or are very specific about their order. This is all part of the job, and this is why learning to communicate well is important; it is very easy to mistake an order. There are some "unruly" customers, who have yelled at me, thrown food/drinks (a boiling hot cup of tea once) at me, and one time, when I was 16, I was grabbed and had my glasses snapped because I could not give a refund on two meals the customer already ate/drank (the customer was drunk). Most of the time, these situations can be diffused, and that is, again, where communication is necessary. I have not had a genuinely mad customer in about a year, and I consider myself a very good mediator and speaker now.

        The best part of the job is tough. The actual work is very tedious, and once you are good, requires little changes to routine. Free coffee is nice in the morning, and food is half price to employees, but aside from the fact that you earned your paycheck, there is little satisfaction that comes from working at McDonald's; personally, I never feel like I accomplish anything after an 8 3/4 hour long shift. Most customers don't want to deal with an order taker, and are just looking to get their food; this is fair, but it is frustrating that as an employee, I get the short end of the stick. My coworkers are very nice though, and it is good to have people you know working beside you everyday. The experience is invaluable; after I graduated, I  started working there full time for about a year. I have learned to work very well, and finished two grade 12 upgrading courses, with 'A's, in two months. I credit this transformation to McDonald's.

McDonald's was my first job. I started out as a crew and worked my way up to management. A typical day would seem to be okay; double checking the schedule, making sure equipment is safe to use. The only issue I had with a typical shift was poor scheduling. With McDonald's being such a busy and fast-paced place, having the crew to effectively run the shift is important. When I wasn't always provided with that help, it made the job much less enjoyable as a manager. I had to deal with many guests, and crew included, who would end up being upset due to the fact that we didn't have enough people to evenly distribute responsibilities such as, taking orders and payment, bagging orders, handling Uber/skip the dishes, making drink orders and cleaning. There were times when all these tasks were left to one person to be in charge of. Taking into consideration how busy the store is, it wasn't very fair or realistic for the crew. As the manager, of course I would jump in to help where I could, but because I had to focus on the tasks that was supposed to be a crew responsibility for so long, it took me away from completing any other, potentially more important tasks I had to complete, as a manager. The experience of having to efficiently problem solve, and react quickly were great character developers. I think one of the hardest parts of my job was learning to become a better people person. Meaning, how to deal with angry guests, crew members who would argue with each other on the floor etc. When people are looking to you as guidance, leadership, answers, solutions (almost like a parent), it can be a lot, depending on the issue of course. Many situations were completely new and unheard of for me, so I really had to learn how to quickly adapt. I think another difficult part of my job was becoming comfortable with expressing my concerns about certain things from a management position. For example, what was normal, what was fair, what was acceptable to complain about and what wasn't. I've gotten a better grasp of the idea but, I do remember that as a crew, I didn't feel like I had a right to say, "no" or to question why, and so that thinking extended over into my new position. Workplace culture? That could've either been a borderline hostile environment or pretty enjoyable and light-hearted one. As much as I would leave from a shift and really try to plan ahead and make sure the next day goes as smoothly as possible, something would end up tripping me up somewhere. And it's okay, because your day is never going to go perfectly or smoothly all the time, if at all. It could just be very frustrating. Especially if I didn't have the people scheduled to help me get caught up for the next manager coming in. The job was not by any means always terrible but at the same time, it just wasn't an enjoyable thing for me anymore. Although, at the end of the day, I would say that something I did enjoy were the people. Building work-friendly relationships with crew and other management at my location was one of the things that made my job enjoyable. For the most part, it wasn't because the crew or the other managers had a bad attitude, it was because the environment could become overwhelming. People say and act much differently under a considerable amount of pressure. But when the chaos died down, we'd congratulate the crew, let them know they did a great job, make sure they're okay after any potential yelling matches they may have had,  provide incentives, make jokes. It was one big, happy, dysfunctional family. My favorite part of the job was definitely the people, and when I do leave McDonald's, that will be what I miss most about it.

Mcdonalds likes to pride itself on innovation and that it leads the way for the fast food market but sometimes you see its competitors roll out advancements before they do , (seen wendy's roll out freestyle coke machines , burger king get a digital menuboard), employee apps that worked better at other competitors for seeing schedules and such


The last couple years they have promoted that there all about there people but in my opinion its just for show, companies like the idea of gloating and advertising that they take care of there people when its like the most basic thought , you want to succeed in a business you take care of the workers, pay them living wages and give a proper work life balance and treat them right not micro manager there every move and you will get the most efficient people that will be happy and create a great work culture its not rocket science people

glad they slowly worked away from competing again your team, they use to have managers compete on there time among each other who did the lowest average and while the idea of trying to lower there  service speed it should be about teamwork ,(it did say it wasn't meant to compete only for a reference but many bosses failed to do that)

now its trying to lower your service numbers and its more reasonable but still at times feels like yes you want to get customers on there way as quickly,efficiently and deliver great tasting food but you get this feeling like its more about the numbers then trying to the right thing, sometimes the consultants and higher ups just look at numbers and breathe down fire on there people , they thrown out common sense out of the window and just expect everyone to figure it out  

this worker movement needs to continue to push these companies from abusing workers rights and force them to adapt or fail,

management plays to much politics and for me it was a constant struggle ,as when you are in charge of a department you have to request your own time , wanted people to make there own calendar to plot times out but most of the time it never worked, other managers would need time and then you wouldn't get time, people would just call in sick and it would be so hard to try and work your shift with a skeleton crew and sometimes get chewed out for not preparing your shift, and you have to choose if your going to cut corners on there policys , they wanted cash counted between every employee who used the p.o.s even when they went on break, but you wouldn't have time to actually do it as if you weren't there helping on floor nothing gets done or your crew are struggling with orders and it would get busy, do a good job turning over for the other manager? its like they do that so they can just fire someone whenever you become too much of a problem in there eyes, because you broke company policy, 

tried my best to treat everyone fairly/respectfully, and made good friends, there was one particular manager that was a very down to earth guy and would always make you feel like he just wanted you to be your best and never yelled at you, make you feel good for coming into work, if only there was more people like that in the world

and they try to have crew treat days , some stores they did alright but some of them, bought the cheapest stuff, value brand chips, Walmart brand headphones and could of done a way better job, disconnected what people really need, 


  

a typically night at dons on grill was starting at 11pm busting out orders till like 1/1:30am, breaking down and disregarding any not being used utensils, ext. doing rounds of dish pit while, doing orders, and cleaning/ wiping things down in grill. grabbing things needed for the morning, raising levels and breaking, if i actually sat down on it thats another story. setting up equipment and utensils for breakfast, stocking my fridge for breakfast, getting another little rush, then it system reset and you bust during that, i clean my grill or make burritos during so they were ready for 4, system was normally at 3ish. prepping anything else that needed to be done or cooked. then at 4 you count waste, clearing all the rest of the burgers and stuff then raising breakfast levels. continuing to clean back wash and put things away in their place. mopping and sweeping. and making sure everythings ready for the morning person. during all of what youre doing youre more than likely going to have to cover the window person at some point, if both you and your drive thru are multi trained its pretty nice, cause you can both help each other when needed, and can cover each other, its definitely a give and take respect thing. 

If youre on drive thru you have to take all the orders, drop fries, take payment, gather orders/ drinks, also cleaning and stocking up front and the fry station. also the baked goods now. you have to clean the coffee stations, coffee pots, coffee makers, wipe the counters, stock all the cups, tea, sugar, straws, napkins, the whole shibang. you have the abs (drink thing in drive thru) that has to be taken apart and cleaned, the smoothy machine, that has like 6 different parts that need to be done and if you aint spray bottle squirting the ( part where the mix comes out) or even not cleaning that yall in for a surprise. so you have to clean, wipe down and stock the smoothy machine, ice cream machine, abs, coffee counters, and the bin ( hot place where the food goes to be bagged) needs to be the same, cleaned, stocked, wiped. its basically a lot of cleaning and stocking but running back and forth while taking and filling orders can be exhausting, especially when the stock is at the back right of the store, and drive thrus the front left so fun times just get back there and beeeep, just turn the corner, beeeep, half way back to the front beeeeep. so yea that gets irritating. over all though if you have a good team, and supportive people on your shift with you you'll be fine, its a lot of give and take, help when you can and you'll most likely get helped in return.  

the people were all really nice and generous the shift i was on but days could feel a lot like paid high school, its a job, do it, go home dont worry about other people and their lives, cause its not yours. for the most overall part it does give you a good work ethic and appreciation for team work, its easy work for decent money.

I would start at 11pm and close down drive thru and "Window" aka the front of the store with the lobby while taking orders, and teaching the new staff how to close the store down. I had to double check to ensure that everything was good to go for the morning (eg. enough coffee, tea's were stocked, oatmeal, water, milk.). I also had to ensure that lunch was ready to go as well, so they had to have their cambro bill full, enough bags stocked, toys stocked, happy meal boxes, salad bags etc.  

Bt 1am I had to go into the kitchen and make sure that the kitchen was cleaned and emptied so I could thaw out the freezers (two a night), then I started making anywhere from 20-80 burrito's, 6 containers of shredded lettuce, 4 containers of three different types of onions, pickles, leaf lettuce, cut over 24 tomatoes, 7 cucumbers, then clean the Coffee machine, Coffee puts, smoothie, sunday, the drive through ABS, clean up any mess I made in the kitchen, stock the kitchen for breakfast, all the while brining 48 muffins from the freezer to the over ever 42 minutes. I made lists often.

By the time 5am came around I had to have iced coffee made, coffee brewed, fancy coffee machine up and running, smoothie machine wiped down with 6 different muffins stocked to the very top (8-12), and make sure the signs were flipped inside the store, then we would start taking customers orders through drive thru. 

It was fast paced, getting all the orders out under two minutes from the time we punch in the orders, but the more staff were enjoyable. Different personalities would clash, but for the most part it was the most enjoyable part of my day.

The hardest part of the job was making sure everything got done in such a manner that everyone was happy, but knowing that it wasn't good enough. Hearing your co-workers talk about you because they didn't have the patients to wait two hours for your shift to be done, and then having them ask you to stay longer on the days where the staff were sick. The inability to take a break if you were having a bad day was the second worst.

The first was dealing with management that didn't think that because of your gender you were not a worthy employee. There was much talk about how he treated even the other female managers during there meetings. And there was very little good to be said about him.

The younger managers however were easy to work with, took their job seriously, and did their best to promote a healthy fun work environment. After you cross the 29 age line the management starts to go down hill with one or two exceptions.

I loved dealing with the young people at night in the summer, that was by far my most favourite part because they were so joyous and full of life. They would have the most random conversations with me and something thought inducing thoughtful ones as well. Customers in general made my job easy and fun. They taught me that as long as you are polite, smiling, and cheerful, that you will make a morning better, and end a night perfectly.

McDonald's provided a lot of great opportunities to me at a very young age; by the time I was 16 I was already apart of the management team, and headed for salary manager for when I turned 18. Leadership skills, job responsibility and accountability,I'd highly recommend McDonald's as a first time job.

The worst thing working for McDonalds, which I suppose also ties in with the best thing working for McDonald's.. was the language barrier. What I mean by this is in terms of diversity and getting to work and meet thousands of new people almost on a daily basis, interaction with different cultures and languages really opens your eyes to the world ; But language one thing most fast food restaurants with TFW would be aware of - speaking another language on the floor has significant impact on the employees around who don't speak the language. Managers were no stranger to break this rule as well.

One thing that kept me with McDonald's for so long.. was the people. I have only worked at one store personally - but from what I experienced and had to deal with everyday were the repercussions of having managers who clearly shouldn't have been promoted to their positions. One thing McDonald's lacks in terms of training for their management teams is how to deal with emotions. A lot of times I'd come onto shift and there would be some emotional issue I'd have to deal with right off the bat - generally a manager / salary having a bad day and clearly taking it out on the crew.
Its different if its crew and crew arguing, because theres a solution for that always.
When its management and crew arguing.. and the manager is so clearly in the wrong, theres not much you can do.

I wish that the location I was working for could have found a permanent restaurant manager ; first 3.5 years of my service was flawless. Then restaurant managers would last 6 months tops after that and quit. Each RM that quit, pushed my development and other swings development back about 4-6 months each restaurant manager. After 2 years of this I had come to the conclusion that if I  wanted to learn more..McDonald's and the location I was working for could no longer do that for me.
The best part of my job was the recognition. Not from my superiors; but from my crew. They consistently nominated me for awards, I was able to work around persons disabilities (ie metal allergy, couldnt wear a headset, cant use a till to take orders very well - She became my hospitality ambassador, running and presenting all the orders, completely customer focused.), I was able to be flexible in where I wanted to place my staff so I could continue providing coaching and feedback on procedures, which in turn strengthen our bond from crew - management. 
Overall, leaving McDonald's has the potential to be great - it was just a matter of having the right people in the right places.

I've worked at McDonald's for over a year now, I have worked all over the front but never the back. In the front I have been a runner (brings food to customer), cashier and a person on drinks. The tasks themselves weren't complicated, cashier is simple to learn and I personally got good at it fast.But customers have no respect for you, they treat you like you're not a human being. It can be very frustrating when they speak to you as if you can't speak English, when I clearly can. It becomes very frustrating. As soon as you become a McDs employee people lose respect for you and forget that you are a human being. Drinks is easy as well but when it gets busy and you don't have enough staff- you're in trouble. Especially during dollar drink days and promotions. Running is quite easy, but when the back team is blocked up, the food doesn't come to you so you can't run it so the customers yell at you making your job harder and slower. 

I did learn a lot about responsibility, initiative and team work. I'm always on time and prepared for work, and I learned the importance of being on time and prepared for not only work but day to day activities. 

I've been through 4 store managers now, all except one have been nice. The other managers that help run the store are all nice but they play favourites with their friends and/or family members. The majority of the employees at my store are a certain race, and they speak in their own language and only help each other and it can be awkward and frustrating. If you're on a shift with only those people and they only speak in their language and your standing there while they're laughing at something you don't understand- it isn't that great. Because I don't have a very close relationship with any of the managers I'm always left doing the things no one else wants to do, (garbages, cleaning, working on cash). And the main reason is because of my race.. which is AWFUL. I have proved myself time after time that I am fast and efficient at what I do, but they still put me on the bad jobs. 

I did make a lot of friends, I love a lot of my co-workers but they never put us in shifts together. 

The hardest part of my job is the customers, most of them are beyond rude which makes your job very hard. On top of the the favouritism is crazy... 

The only real pro I can think of is flexible hours. 

I get 50% of most food, but my new manager is saying no to 50% off things that aren't extra value meals (big mac, quarter pounder, filet o fish etc). I'm really tired of this job but atm there is no where else to work except retail (which has no hours) and other fast food restaurants. I can't wait until my job at McDonalds is over, every shift I have I want to cry.

I applied for a Full-Time position in Calgary last year. To be honest, I usually enjoy working at late-night shift with my usual manager and my co-worker. The only problem is that they don't give enough people and we really need to multi-task to serve customers. The coffee lineup starts at 5 am and we are only 3 people working at night. 1 in drive thru, 1 in kitchen and 1 in front counter. the front counter person is usually helping me if there is no customer in the front or my manager is helping me to take order while I am saying one moment to the customer in the speaker to present the food and take the payment at the last window. The restaurant manager is always complaining about the time leaderboard screen that the average serving time is slow. Why just they put at least 4 persons to work in late night in order to speed up the time? We are not FLASH to serve in milliseconds, we are also human. Our bodies cannot be split into 2. The worst thing about this job is the management. The restaurant manager is really rude, no appreciation of good job especially for late night shift people. I also remember that we are also required to do general cleaning when a higher consultant will visit the store and we are only 3 people. They only know that we  have  nothing to do because its late night shift.. they forgot that we must also need to serve customers and they expect to finish the tasks on time? what is more important, customers or the cleaning stuff. If someone gonna visit, they should put at least 1 more extra person and an additional 1 more maintenance guy ... After New Year, they started to cut hours and they only give me 2 shifts per week ... I remember that I applied for full time position and the restaurant manager decide to cut hours just because of low sales during winter... I dont care as long as I've applied for full time shift, they should honour my application ... And one more thing, my other manager at late night thinks only about the success of the store, she doesn't care if her employees are not feeling well. there is one time that I need to go home early because I feel weak because of diarrhea and she replied that why the assistant manager keeps hiring the incompetent people. I felt upset and mad ...  All in all, it is a good place to start to work especially for the young people who needs a job experience ..

Work Review: Cashier at McDonald's

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working as a cashier at McDonald's over the past [duration]. In this review, I would like to highlight some key aspects of my experience.
