Memory Express

Fellow sales and customer service coworkers are the best. Everyone at work has a strong bond and sense of teamwork to help each other out. Management is very supportive and does their best to help out where they can in most stores. The 4 on and 3 off schedule is amazing. The days are 10 hours, but it's not much different than an 8 hour work day.

Amazing if you are into computers or want to get more in depth with knowledge.

The biggest downfall, as most companies, is the HQ. It's easy to see how this company could greatly benefit from a complete restructuring. HQ treats this company as a small family owned business with a handful of stores, not a nationwide small business, which leaves many things to be desired.

They are also incredibly cost effective with some things, such as the inventory system and Point of Sale system, which for a computer company, are seriously lacking and actively make our day to day jobs harder.

The biggest challenge in this is the clear favoritism from HQ towards certain stores/cities/employees. 

When the other reviews say there is lot of internal politics with HeadQuarters they are completely correct. HQ is pretty much filled only with the owner's 'most trusted' confidants, which basically means all they seem to do is be Yes Men for him. 

There is such a clear disconnect from how HQ runs things and how the store actually needs to be run to be successful and to keep the employees happy. I do not believe the owner even understands each store's specific clientele and operational needs at all. The prairie stores are the ones that make the most money, so if you don't work there, HQ basically doesn't care about you. 

There are no regional or district managers to bridge the gap between HQ and individual stores, so all you get is a lot of 'policies' that HQ says to 'use at your discretion'. This obviously leads to disconnect between stores, as each store has their own way of handling things. The way things are just expected to be known, even though one week they're were to be done one way, and they suddenly change with little to bare minimum communication. 

This company has a serious communication issue.

The base pay used to be incredibly competitive, but with the rising minimum wage and COL, it's probably better to work at a fast food joint, less responsibility and equal if not more pay. 

Most employees are expected to know multiple roles/jobs within the store, which would be fine if that were in the job description or if they were fairly compensated for it. 

All in all, if you're just looking to help people with purchasing, fixing or upgrading computers, and you are happy in the sales position, this job is honestly quite good.

You will learn more about computers than you knew before without a doubt, regardless of your knowledge level beforehand.

That being said, I personally do not believe there is any room for growth in this company. This is a fine job to have and to hold if you're comfortable, but if you want to advance your career, look elsewhere. It's a great job to have on your resume, but unless you get in the 'inner circle' expect to be paid minimum, especially in lower density stores that don't have as much traffic for commissions. 

While Memx truly lives for their slogan "creating customers for life", the overarching internal experience leaves things to be desired.
Every store is run without direction from HQ, which works until it doesn't. 
There is no opportunity for monetary growth unless you are in the right place at the right time to get a promotion, regardless of how long you have been with the company or how hard you work. Memory Express store employees have been given the exact same dollar/hr wage for ~12 years. This was a fantastic thing a decade ago, but has quickly become more of a slap in the face, only to be highlighted by the owner's commonly stated opinion of "If they want more money, they can just sell more things".
The management team is fantastic, caring, and professional. We all were given the freedom to make the choices that we felt were best for our stores, but only if it didn't cost the company a dollar to follow through with, unless you were one of a handful of specific individuals.
The Ontario stores feel as they are looked at as the "red-headed step-child" as the saying goes, and are offered little support and no training from HQ, from the lowest to the highest roles in each store.

The long and short of it, Memx is a company that cares about and always looks after it's clientele and that is a hard thing to find in this day and age. If you are looking for a job in which you can be there for the people you interact with, a job that lets you go above and beyond any other company in this industry, Memory Express is the place for you. But every upside also has a downside that you may or may not encounter.

I wanted a life changing experience from the intense office work I was used to as well as decades of aggressive outdoor labour on the rails, in the oilfield, operating heavy equipment in harsh environments, etc. I applied to Memory Express as I was a network specialist, a hardware technician and software specialist in my youth. I wanted to revisit my passion.

Memory Express gave me a chance (although out of my current element at that time). I had a blast working for them. It was a fun, nice environment and the management was incredible. The ONLY issue was mine, not M.E.'s The pay was lower than what I was used to. 

As far as retail goes, Memory Express is from what I learned and experienced, the best business a retail-minded person could work. Greatest work experience of my life. I still shop there and stop-in to see my old co-workers from time to time.

I've been at Memory Express for over 2 and a half years now, and I've always been impressed at how the majority of the ownership and management team across the company try to do the best they can for both the customers and the employees. 

Most employees work on a 4 day on, 3 day off schedule which is great for work life balance, and salary and benefits are amazing for a job of this level. The job is fun and usually a positive experience, especially if you like computers and/or customer service. I've been through quite a few different managers and groups of employees, and my experiences have been overwhelmingly positive.

The job is usually relatively straightforward. It can be very busy during peak seasons, but I've never found it overwhelming or unpleasant because of that. Responsibilities are well-distributed between the different departments, so the workload is balanced and always manageable.

While the day to day work is not thoroughly enjoyable, as you are dealing with a public that alternatively knows either too much, or far too little (sometimes even within the same person!) it gives a solid opportunity to spend time immersed in IT hardware, and an opportunity to study important concepts while @ work. 
It is not a place I would advocate one plan to spend their entire career, as aside from store management, who are put upon with some ridiculous structure and requests from private ownership, there is little to no room for advancement without complimentary skills that HQ would require like networking or programming. 

Loved working for Memory Express was probably my favorite job. In a typical day you can be doing a number of things mainly customer based stuff, but you can end up starting the day off helping with a cable sale and moving directly to selling a laptop minutes after. Its a fast paced environment that keeps you on your toes. Lots of fun the people there are amazing and I will call many of them friends for life. The hardest part of the job in my opinion was honestly dealing with customers and knowing that anything that you say can be interpreted in a million different ways so you have to be clear and concise without being offensive and at times that is a very big challenge. All in all you learn patience and empathy from doing a job like this. Still probably my new #1 favorite place to work.

Overall the Memory express culture is pretty good. Full of nerdy and fun employees who for many of them are living life by talking about there hobby. 
The wages are fair for what is asked of the employees for the most part.  
The management team is flexible and the stores all run a little differently.
Customer experience is the big focus of this company which is something that is very important.
The downside to this company is the lack of advancement or Raises to match inflation.  A raise is unlikely to happen ever.  Career advancement is extremely limited. The position you start in is probably the position you will also finish in for most people. 

If you are okay with that small problem then it is a great place to work for any tech enthusiast

Connecting to customers through email and phone calls.  Providing customers with solutions for there IT needs. 

We were infused to provide the customers with the best customer service we could provide.  From starting with a Happy Hello to start and ending with helping the customer out with there products.

Management was the best,  allowed the whole sales team to work in one direction and providing the best customer service. 

The workplace culture is mixed with gamers,  hardware enthusiast,  software and network specialists that all come together to make a great company team.

I worked for a year with this company and did an extra half hour a day, didn't get paid for it nor did I get to bank the time.  However when I had to take some time for medical reasons, I was docked pay to the time miss and the extra half hour I worked was not taken in to consideration.  Another thing was when I was laid off I didn't get any severance pay, they told me pay was 2 weeks in advance.  Never seen a company pay someone in advance of the time worked.  If I knew what I know now, Memory Express would have been taken to the labour board.

Management is generally good. Staff are mostly fun people however there are some extreme stragglers employed. Ownership is completely oblivious to how things work on the ground level and almost require a level of boot-licking in order to garner their favour. Almost always employees are required to do completely unrelated tasks (in relation to their employment position) to keep their internal value at a comfortable level.
